Center for Advanced Microelectronics and Biomolecular Research (CAMBR).
The NASA Institute of Advanced Microelectronics, under the umbrella of CAMBR, formerly the Microelectronics Research Center (MRC), was established by NASA in 1995. In 1988, the former MRC was named one of nine national Space Engineering Research Centers by the NASA Office of Aeronautics and Space Technology. Through CAMBR, the institute will continue work done previously at the Space Engineering Research Center at the University of Idaho.
Our goal is to advance special purpose Very Large Scale Integrated (VLSI) processors and VLSI electronics. This center conducts state-of-the-art electronic research by designing special purpose computers that benefit the electronics industry and the nation. Industrial needs are addressed through close interaction with major electronics companies and national needs through involvement with national research laboratories in NASA, DOD and DOE.
Microelectronics Research and Communications Institute
(MRCI), was established in 1983 as one of the university's first strategic research initiatives for the design of high performance application specific integrated circuits (ASICs). The MRCI was designated as one of nine NASA space engineering research centers in 1988. One of the MRCI's early projects was the Reed-Solomon decoder chip used on the Hubble space telescope. In recent years, the MRCI has broadened its mission to include communications, real-time software, electromagnetics, and intelligent control.

The research institutes of Helsinki University of Technology bring together expertise from related research fields. They each carry out and co-ordinate research work in their own field, particularly large co-operative projects that extend beyond the boundaries of individual departments. They may also arrange teaching. The institutes combine the mental and material resources of the laboratories. They follow the development in their own field, maintain contacts with the relevant fields of industry, other universities of technology and other research institutes, and promote international co-operation.
Institute of Telecommunication and Software Engineering (TSE-Institute)
Several laboratories in the departments of Electrical Engineering (EE) and Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) participate in the work of the institute. The TSE-Institute aims at wide-ranging research in networking and digital media, which combines its fields of expertise: network architectures, multimedia, software engineering, usability, protocol engineering, cryptographics, digital signal processing and neural nets. The TSE-Institute promotes postgraduate studies in the HeCSE graduate school. In addition, it co-ordinates the MediaPoli initiative to build broadband fixed and wireless networks in the Otaniemi area for large-scale research and experiments in new telecom and datacom services and infrastructures.

The Working Group on Space Sciences in Africa
The Working Group on Space Sciences in Africa is an international, non-governmental organization founded by African delegates at the 6th United Nations/European Space Agency Workshop held in Bonn on 9-13 September 1996. The scientific scope of the Working Group's activities is defined to encompass:
    • astronomy and astrophysics
    • solar-terrestrial interaction and its influence on terrestrial climate
    • planetary and atmospheric studies
    • the origin of life and exobiology
The Working Group seeks to promote the development of the space sciences in Africa by initiating and coordinating various capacity-building programmes throughout the region. These programmes fall into a broad spectrum ranging from the promotion of basic scientific literacy in the space sciences to the support of international research projects. The Working Group also promotes international cooperation among African space scientists and acts as a forum for the exchange of ideas and information through its publications, outreach programmes, workshops, and scientific meetings. The Working Group receives financial support from foundations and institutes committed to its objectives. One of its principal forms of support, however, is the time contributed freely by individual scientists.
