Continuing Education for Today's Professionals
Providing quality continuing education and training for library leadership and decision making is a priority of the Library Administration and Management Association (LAMA), a division of the American Library Association. From building design to diversity training to libraries in the digital age, LAMA offers stimulating, informative regional institutes on topics of current importance to the library profession. Presented by knowledgeable and experienced professionals, these one-day workshops can be tailored to address local needs and will benefit managers, administrators, staff, and trustees, including those who may not be able to travel to national conferences and seminars. LAMA Regional Institutes have been featured at state and regional annual conferences, at universities and public libraries, and as in-house training in organizations from Alaska to Florida. Attendees are enthusiastic about the quality and content of LAMA Regional Institutes, calling them "the realistic approach to leadership in today's environment" and "relevant and practical." A typical evaluation reads, "The instructor provided information that can be adapted in my workplace. I enjoyed the opportunity to interact with colleagues on an intellectual, thought-provoking topic."

CARA Education and Outreach:
Precollege Education
Precollege education is the heart and soul of CARA's outreach efforts and the cornerstone of our K-12 efforts is the Space Explorers Program. The Space Explorers program is a multi-year commitment that aims to increase interest and abilities in math and science of African American students from disadvantaged inner city school systems. The program strives to broaden the Space Explorers' base of scientific knowledge; to improve their abilities in problem solving, critical thinking, and synthesis; to develop their communications skills, to enrich their awareness of career options in science and technology fields, and to increase their motivation to attend college. This is achieved through exposure to advanced technology, hands-on activities, and the cultivation of personal relationships with members of CARA's research community. The Space Explorers Program is built upon what are recognized to be four effective strategies of outreach education:
  • using hands-on (laboratory) activities

    Introduction
The Yerkes Summer Insititutes (YSI) are annual events organized by CARA for the Space Explorers Program. The high school students (the Space Explorers) come up from Chicago to Yerkes Observatory (in Williams Bay, Wisconsin) for a week in August. The students sleep and eat near the Observatory at George Williams College, but they spend their days (and a good part of their nights) learning astronomy at the Observatory. The students generally stay in the program for at least three years as high school students, and now we're starting to get high school students who have been with us even longer through the Young Astronomers program. This has a significant impact on what and how we teach the students. The themes of the YSIs are on a three-year cycle: The Solar System The Sun and Stars , and The Galaxy . After three years, there are enough new students in the Space Explorers program that we start again with the Solar System theme. Astronomy instructors live at the observatory; Office of Special Programs staff from Chicago live with the students at George Williams and take care of all of the details associated with running a youth program for thirty high school students.

The Energy and Minerals Applied Research Center (EMARC) was established to develop an integrated program of teaching and faculty-directed graduate research in directions that are: 1) basic to an understanding of the geology and occurrence of energy and mineral resources, and 2) may have application to the interpretation of, search for, or development of such resources. EMARC is housed in the Department building, is the most recent Department-affiliated entity to come into being (1989), and currently has 12 affiliated teaching or research faculty from the Department, CIRES, INSTAAR, and the Museum. The BP Center for Visualization The primary mission of the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research (INSTAAR), is is to facilitate interdisciplinary research leading to a predictive understanding of the biological, chemical, and physical interactions that regulate global change and the earth system in arctic, alpine, and other regions. INSTAAR, located on the East Campus, also operates the Mountain Research Station 25 miles (40 km) west of Boulder at 9,450 feet (2880 m) in the Front Range of the Colorado Rockies.

The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES)

serves as a center for multidisciplinary collaboration among environmental scientists from Boulder and throughout the world.
CIRES research programs involve field investigations conducted in the mountains of Colorado, the Aleutian Islands, the Arctic and Antarctic regions, Hawaii and various Pacific atolls, and elsewhere. Current CIRES research programs fall under four areas: environmental chemistry and biology, atmospheric and climate dynamics, solid earth geophysics and the Cryospheric and Polar Processes division. The Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research (INSTAAR)
is an interdisciplinary research institute with ongoing programs in most earth/ocean environments as well as many alpine and most polar regions of the world. It operates the Mountain Research Station and publishes the quarterly journal Arctic, Antarctic, and Alpine Research. Disciplines include plant and animal ecology, paleoecology, palynology, geochronology, climatology, oceanography, hydrology, remote sensing, sedimentology, geophysics, glaciology, glacial geology, and geochronological research.
