    • Read or summarize the Current Events article to students.
    • Ask students to work in groups to brainstorm expenses for their school (e.g., books, computers, teacher salaries, musical instruments, heat, light bulbs). Tell students that one sample school district divided their expenses into the following main categories: Instruction, Transportation, Athletics and Student Activities, Custodians and Building Operations, and Administration. Put these headings on the board, and have students suggest which topics some of their expenses should go under. List their expenses and help them add others. Explain that finding places to cut in school budgets is usually very difficult. Have each group choose one expense that they definitely wouldn't want to cut in their school's budget. Ask them to write down the expense as well as why they think it would be important not to cut it. As an example, you could mention that they may not want to cut new computers out of the budget because training on the latest equipment will help students learn the computer skills they need to find good jobs. Have each group take turns to orally describe and defend their choices for expenses not cut.

    South Korea Quick Facts
Political Features Located across the Sea of Japan from Japan , South Korea is much more hospitable than its northern neighbor, North Korea . The south has major agricultural production, as well as its industrial base. It is industry for which South Korea is generally most noted; the country supports a large number of manufacturing industries, from automobile production and shipbuilding to clothing and footwear. Although North and South Korea have officially been at war since 1950, the active conflict known as the Korean War lasted from 1950 to 1953. The capital city of Seoul is located only 30 miles from the line of battle, now marked by the DMZ Unlike the North, with its communist government, South Korea is a republic; this status has given it support over the years from Western countries, including the U.S.

    Country Background
South Korea is one of two countries that occupy the Korean Peninsula. The other country, North Korea, is slightly larger in area than South Korea, but South Korea has nearly twice as many people as its northern neighbor. Japan controlled the Korean Peninsula until the end of WWII, when it was forced to give up the territory. The Peninsula was then divided into two distinct zones, called North Korea and South Korea. The Soviet Union occupied North Korea and the United States controlled called South Korea. In 1948, South Koreans established the Republic of South Korea, an autonomous nation.

Geography Language Ecology Political System Economy ... History Geography Location The Korean Peninsula extends southwards from the northeast part of the Asian continent between 33 and 43 degrees North Latitude and 124 and 132 degrees East Longitude. The standard meridian of the peninsula is 135 degrees, 9 hours ahead of GMT. The Amnokkang and Tuman-gang Rivers border both China and Russia to the north, and Japan is just across the East Sea. Area The National Flag and Flower The Korean flag is called T 'aegukki. Its design symbolizes the principles of yin and yang in Oriental philosophy. The circle in the center of the flag is divided into two equal parts. The upper red section represents the positive cosmic forces of yang. Conversely, the lower blue section represents the negative cosmic forces of yin. The two forces together embody the concepts of continual movement and balance and harmony that characterize the sphere of infinity. The circle is surrounded by four trigrams, one in each corner. Each trigram symbolizes one of the four universal elements: heaven, earth, fire and water. The Korean flower is Mugunghwa or the rose of Sharon. Unlike most flowers, the rose of Sharon is remarkably tenacious and resistant to both blight and insects. Its symbolic significance stems from the national flower's root word, "mugung," meaning immortality, which accurately reflects the perseverance and determination of the Korean people.
