Introduction [Top of Page] Background: Following World War II, a republic was set up in the southern half of the Korean Peninsula while a communist government was installed in the north. Between 1950 and 1953, US and other UN forces intervened to defend South Korea from North Korean attacks supported by the Chinese; an armistice was signed in 1953. Thereafter, South Korea achieved amazing economic growth, with per capita income rising to 13 times the level of North Korea. In 1997, the nation suffered a severe financial crisis from which it continues to make a solid recovery. South Korea has also maintained its commitment to democratize its political processes. LAND
Korea lies adjacent to China and Japan. The northern border of Korea is formed by the Amnokkang (Yalu) and Tuman-gang (Tumen) rivers which separate it from Manchuria. A 16-kilometer segment of the Tuman-gang river to the east also serves as a natural border with Russia. The west coast of the Korean Peninsula is bounded by the Korea Bay to the north and the Yellow Sea to the south; the east coast is bounded by the East Sea. Two hundred kilometers separate the peninsula from eastern China. The Japanese islands of Honshu and Kyushu are located 206 kilometers to the southeast, just across the Korea Strait. Because of its unique geographical location, Chinese culture filtered into Japan through Korea; a common cultural sphere of Buddhism and Confucianism was thus established between the three countries. The Korean Peninsula extends for about 1,000 kilometers southward from the northeast Asian continental landmass. Roughly 300 kilometers in width, climate variations are more pronounced along the south-north axis. Due to these variations, marked differences in plant vegetation can be seen along this axis. Generally speaking, the southern half of the peninsula is warmer than the northern half. Back to Top TERRITORY The total area of the peninsula, including the islands, is 22,154 square kilometers of which about 45 percent (99,313 square kilometers), excluding the area in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), constitutes the territory of South Korea. The combined territories of South and North Korea is similar in size of Britain (244,100 square kilometers) and Guyana (215,000 square kilometers). South Korea along is about the size of Hungary (93,000 square kilometers) and Jordan (97.700 square kilometers).

Geography and Location
The Korean Peninsula extends southward from the northeastern part of the Asian continent between latitudes from 33 to 43 degrees North, and longitudes from 124 to 131 degrees East. Since 1945, as a result of the Cold War, the peninsula has been divided into two parts: the democratic Republic of Korea, or South Korea, and communist Democratic People's Republic of Korea, or North Korea.

Area and Topography
The total area of the peninsula is 222,154 square kilometers, similar in size to that of Britain, New Zealand, or Romania. South Korea occupies 99,392 square kilometers or 45 percent of the total land mass, and North Korea the remaining 122,762 square kilometers. Seventy percent of the land is covered with mountains, particularly to the north and east.
Along the southern and western coasts, the mountains descend gradually into broad coastal plains. Most of the rivers have their tributaries in the northern and eastern sides, and flow into the West and South Seas. Concentrated for the most part on the southern coast are more than 3,000 islands of various sizes that provide a scenery that is unparalleled by any other place in the world. Korea's geography influences its history and culture.
Republic of Korea Korea is a rugged peninsula lying between China on the west and north and Japan to the east. The whole Korean peninsula is about 85,500 square miles, about the size of Utah. South Korea is only 99,000 square miles roughly similar to Oregon and its population is close to 50 million (Compared to Oergon's 3 million). Mountains and hills make up about 70 percent of the country. Sunset on Cheju Island Farming and Fishing:
Until modern times, Koreans lived in small farming communities that were mainly concentrated in the few good arable parts of the peninsula. Although Located at the same latitude as both St. Louis and San Francisco, mountains and frigid arctic winds from the north give Korea cold winters. Preserved and pickled foods, prepared In Anticipation of the cold winters, are characteristics of Korean cooking. Cold weather and farm work make for hearty food. Unlike neighboring Japan or China, a Korean breakfast, for instance, might be a big bowl of Tripe Soup or Beef Rib Soup with lots of rice. Its Peninsular Location gives Koreans three different seas from which to gather fish- the Yellow Sea, the East Sea (also known as the Sea of Japan), and the unique micro environment where the two seas come together at the south end of the peninsula. Seafood is a feature of Korean life and no table is ever without a bowl of tiny dried and salted fish, even for breakfast.

Korean Geography
The Korean peninsula lies directly between China and Japan, extending in a southeasterly direction from the continent. A relatively small land, Korea is roughly 1,000 kilometers in length and only 216 kilometers wide at its narrowest point ( map links The peninsula is separated from China in the northwest by the Yalu River, from the Soviet Union in the northeast by the Tuman River, and from Japan by the East Sea. China's Shantung peninsula lies just 190 kilometers to the west across the Yellow Sea. The Korean peninsula is in fact a "chain of hills" stretching from the mainland. Mountains cover 70% of Korea's land area, making it one of the most mountainous regions in the world and a great place for hikers and nature lovers. On the peninsula, coexisting uneasily side by side, separated only by the De-militarized Zone roughly approximating the 38th parallel, lie the Republic of Korea in the South and North Korea. The Republic of Korea is somewhat smaller in land area, 99,091 square kilometers compared to 122,370 in the North, but its population of just over 45 million is about twice as large as the North's.
