We're expecting a baby boy around March 6th. This will be his coming home outfit. The smocking is a combination of two smocking plates from past Sew Beautiful magazines.
A close-up view of Timothy's smocked bubble.
For Christmas, I was surprised with an embroidery machine (the Disney PE-180D). My first "real" project has been burp cloths for Timothy.
Hannah and Jonathan's Christmas pictures (2002). Hannah's dress is Ginger Snaps Smocked jumper and the smocking is "Duck the Halls" by Little Memories.
A close-up of "Duck the Halls".
Hannah loves horseback riding now. She wanted a pony dress. This was my first attempt at coloring outside the lines. The smocking plate was supposed to be three white unicorns, but she wanted three horses to match her three favorite horses.

This is my first attempt at a new jumper pattern. It's Ginger Snaps Jumper. I really like the style. This was also my first attempt at adding "wings" to my insert.

Hannah's baptism dress. It is made from a white polished cotton with a white organdy overlay. The smocking is from Sew Beautiful magazine.

Welcome sewing friends. Thank you so much for visiting our heirloom sewing and smocking web site. We hope that you will take time to explore all of the wonderful features at this site, that combine messages, pictures and chat room pages. On Tuesday nights, at 8pm. (EST), we offer a live chat room, and we invite YOU to attend. Many sewers pop in regularly, to discuss their projects and the techniques that they use. Discussions include patterns and companies, hand sewing, digitizing embroidery designs, sewing machines, stores and on-line shopping sources, dolls, you name it, and of course, chocolate and what's going on in our lives. Bring your sewing to catch up on or your cup of coffee and chat with ladies from around the world. It is the friendliest group of chatters you will ever experience and you are invited to join us weekly. We occasionally have a chat room project to share, like our handmade doll, Tabitha, who is currently traveling around the country picking up clothes and accessories from many of our chatters. What a wonderful way to share our talents and our enthusiasm for our love of sewing. Feel free to post any questions or comments you have on our message board. Perhaps you will find the answer or a reference to help you. We also encourage you to send pictures of the fabulous projects you have made. Words can never explain the gorgeous items that have been made by our chatters?.and throw in some family pictures too! We want to get to know you.

About Us
The Button Emporium started as a mail order catalog business specializing in artist buttons in sterling silver, pewter and porcelain. When we participated in shows and conventions, so many requests for a store poured in, that we took the plunge December, 1996 opening our downtown Portland storefront in March, 1997. By August the emporium had quickly outgrown its store space so we acquired the adjoining storefront. We now have room for a retail showroom and classes we hold for various hand crafting specialties. Information on classes available will be found in this site as they are scheduled.

Smocking and Fine Sewing, 19th Century Sources
Near the end of the 19th century, when costume reached absurd proportions with the enormous bustle and mutton sleeve, smocking, primarily as dress ornamentation for women's garments, established a vogue for both casual and formal wear as well as for decorative items around the home. This volume includes several of the lessons from Weldon's, the premier women's handwork magazine from England, published during the 1880s and 1890s which focused on late Victorian needlework. From this rich source, the related subjects of smocking, plain needlework, jeweled embroidery focusing on exquisite embellishment ideas; and knickknacks showing how the same sewing techniques were applied to decorative household items; were selected. 96 pages soft back.
