History
The early Slovenes settled in the river valleys of the Danube Basin and the eastern Alps in the 6th century. In 748, Slovenia was brought under Germanic rule, first by the Frankish empire of the Carolingians, who converted the population to Christianity, and then as part of the Holy Roman Empire in the 9th century. The Austro-German monarchy took over in the early 14th century and continued to rule (as the Austrian Habsburg Empire from 1804) right up until 1918 - with only one brief interruption. Over these six centuries, the upper classes became totally Germanised, though the peasantry retained their Slavic (later Slovenian) identity. In 1809, in a bid to isolate the Habsburg Empire from the Adriatic, Napoleon established the so-called Illyrian Provinces (Slovenia, Dalmatia and part of Croatia), making Ljubljana the capital (which it still is today). Though the Habsburgs returned in 1814, French reforms in education, law and public administration endured. The democratic revolution that swept Europe in 1848 also increased political and national consciousness among the Slovenes, and after WWI and the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Slovenia was included in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. During WWII much of Slovenia was annexed by Germany, with Italy and Hungary taking smaller shares. Slovenian partisans fought against the invaders from mountain bases. Slovenia joined the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1945 and remained behind the Iron Curtain for several decades.

It Catholicism was Roman (not Eastern) and priests played an important political role in this country without an established aristocracy or merchant class. During the period of the Austro-Hungarian empire, Slovenia was part of the Austrian side of the dual monarchy and when it collapsed as a consequence of World War I, Slovenia, together with Serbs and Croats, came together as "The National Council" out of which Yugoslavia would later be born. Within Yugoslavia, Slovenia held something of an anomalous position since its language was different and the population was, on the whole, better educated and more advanced industrially than other parts of the country. After the brief break-up of Yugoslavia perpetrated by the Nazis, Tito reconstituted the country with Slovenia as a constituent `republic.' In 1990, a decade after Tito's death, Communism fell and Slovenia wasted little time in proclaiming its first true independence in 1991. With strong economic links to Austria, Italy, and Hungary, Slovenia has remained prosperous and secure, with little involvement in the troubles to the south.

SONGS OF CICADAS
from Slovenia and Istria (Croatia)
In the Slovene Museum of Natural History ( Prirodoslovni muzej Slovenije ) in Ljubljana Slovenia exists a unit for Natural Audio and Video Documentation of Slovenia (NAVIS). One of the activities is the research in bioacoustics of insects, with a focus on true bugs (Heteroptera) and singing cicadas (Homoptera: Cicadoidea). Here we represent typical calling songs of 9 species od cicadas, 8 of them found in Slovenia and 1 - Cicadetta mediterranea - living on the nearby coast of Southern Istria near Pula (Croatia) Songs of some smaller species are high pitched, ranging into ultrasound (e.g. Tettigetta brullei ) and are not easily detectable by unaided ear. A " bat or ultrasonic detector UsD , in our case an Ultra Sound Advice S-25 detector) with a directional microphone ( Mic ) helps to localize such small cicadas even at distances up to 50 m.
Recordings presented here were made with a directional microphone Telinga DAT recorder (TCD-D3 or TCD-D7)( DAT ) by Matija Gogala (Ljubljana) and Andrej V. Popov (St.Petersburg, Russia) during the summers 1994/95 in Slovenia and in one case using different recording equipment ( Cicadetta montana Due to high frequencies in the songs of some species we use here the sound files with the high sampling rate of 48 kS/s. If you can not play back sounds with the same rate use the lower sampling rate but be aware, that the sounds are slightly slowed down and lowered in pitch.

In World War II Slovenia was divided (1941) among Germany, Italy, and Hungary. After the war, Slovenia was made (1945) a constituent republic of Yugoslavia and received part of the former Italian region of Venezia Giulia. In early 1990, Slovenia elected a non-Communist government and stepped up its demands for greater autonomy with the threat of possible secession. In Feb., 1991, the Slovenian parliament ruled that Slovenian law took precedence over federal law. Slovenia declared independence on June 25, and federal troops moved in, but after some fighting withdrew by July. Slovenia, along with Croatia, was recognized as an independent country by the European Community and the United Nations in 1992. Milan Kucan was elected president of Slovenia in 1990 and continues as president of the new republic.

POPULATION CENTERS
About one-half of all Slovenes live in urban areas, particularly in Ljubljana (population, 1994 estimate, 269,972 ) and Maribor (103,113), the republic's two largest cities. Many of the remainder live in rural areas throughout the republic, particularly in alpine villages, where skiing is one of the most popular forms of recreation. In the cities Slovenes enjoy concerts, operas, and art galleries. EDUCATION
The Slovene government requires that all children receive eight years of primary education and four years of secondary education. Almost all Slovenes over the age of ten can read and write. Although not obliga- tory by law, most students receive postsecondary or higher levels of education. There are 30 institutions of higher education in Slovenia; among them is the University of Ljubljana, which was founded in 1595.

Slovenian Slovenija, officially Republic of Slovenia (1994 estimated population 1,972,000), 7,817 square miles (20,246 square kilometers), Southern central Europe, formerly a constituent republic of Yugoslavia. Bordered by Croatia (South), the Gulf of Trieste and Italy (West), Austria (North), and Hungary (East), Slovenia is largely situated in the Karst plateau and Julian Alps. The vast majority of the population are Slovenes; there are Italian, Hungarian, Croatian, Serb, and Bosnian Muslim minorities. Slovenian, a South Slavic tongue, is the official language. Roman Catholicism is the predominant religion.
Ljubljana city (1987 estimated population 233,000) is the capital of Slovenia on a tributary of the Sava River. Located in Western central Slovenia, it is the country's largest city and an industrial and transportation center. Manufactures include textiles, chemicals, and electronic equipment. The city has a medieval fortress and several fine palaces and churches. Known as Emona in Roman times, Ljubljana passed (1277) to the Hapsburgs. In 1919 it became part of the Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (later Yugoslavia). In 1946 Ljubljana became the capital of the Yugoslav constituent republic of Slovenia, which declared its independence in 1991. Other large cities are Maribor and Kranj.
Ruled by Rome from the 1st century BC, the region was settled by the South Slavs (6th century AD) and passed to the Franks (788), the dukes of Bavaria (843), and the Hapsburgs (1335), becoming part of Austria. In 1918 Slovenia was incorporated into Yugoslavia. During World War II it was divided (1941-45) among Germany, Italy, and Hungary. After the war a small part of Italy's Venezia Giulia region was added to Slovenia. In 1991 the republic proclaimed its independence after Serbia refused to agree to a looser Yugoslav confederation. Fighting broke out briefly when the Yugoslav army attempted to retake border posts seized by Slovenia, but a cease-fire led to the withdrawal of Yugoslav forces. Milan Kuccaronan, first elected in 1990, is president of Slovenia.

Slovenia (Slovenija), country on the Balkan Peninsula, south of Austria and east of Italy. The total area is 20,253 sq km (7820 sq mi). The capital and largest city is Ljubljana. The population of Slovenia is approximately 2 million, most of whom are ethnic Slovenes, a Slavic group. Minority groups include Serbs, Croats, and various refugees from the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Education is compulsory, and almost all Slovenes can read. The official language is Slovenian. Most people in Slovenia are Roman Catholic. There is a sizable industrial base and skilled workforce involved in electronics, electrical machinery, processed metal, and motor vehicles. Agriculture is only a small part of the economy. Tourism is of increasing importance. The unit of currency is the Slovenian tolar (or SIT), 1000 SIT = $4.18 US. Slovenia is mountainous (The highest mountain is called Triglav - the name meaning "three-headed" - and is 2864 m high), with heavy forests. The climate varies from warm along the coast of the Adriatic Sea to moderate on the eastern plateaus. Coal is the most abundant natural resource - others include metals, natural gas, and petroleum. Under the 1991 constitution, the chief of the state is the president (Milan KUCAN since April 22, 1990), elected to a five-year term. The head of government is the prime minister (Janez DRNOVSEK since May 14, 1992) , elected to a four-year term by a vote of the State Assembly, which is part of the parliament. The 90 National Assembly (or Drzavni Zbor) members serve four-year terms. National Council (or Drzavni Svet) is an advisory body with limited legislative powers; it may propose laws and ask to review any National Assembly decisions; in the election of NA November 1997, 40 members were elected to represent local, professional, and socioeconomic interests

SCOUTING IN SLOVENIA THE SLOVENIAN CATHOLIC GIRL GUIDES AND BOY SCOUTS ASSOCIATION (ZSKSS) THE SLOVENIAN SCOUT ASSOCIATION (ZTS) The history of Scouting in Slovenia goes back to the times when Slovenia was a part of the former Kingdom of Yugoslavia. In 1922, a meeting of an important political and sporting movement of Yugoslavia and some other European Countries, called "Sokoli" (Falcons), took place in Ljubljana. Scouting was established in Slovenia in 1922. It was officially dissolved on June 10th, 1941 because of World War II. The World Organization of the Scout Movement welcomed Slovenia into its membership in September 1994. Zveza Tabornikov Slovenije (ZTS) has been recognized as the national member organization of Slovenia. The enthusiastic young girls and boys of the Slovenian contingent at the European Jamboree impressed everyone with the quality of their Scouting skills. This reflects very well on the training being provided to all members of the Movement in Slovenia. Zveza Tabornikov Slovenije is a recognized member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement since September 1994. As the recognized national Scout organization in Slovenia ZTS guarantees the rights of WOSM membership which this bestows upon an individual to the members of another Slovenian Scout organization, Zdruzenje Slovenskih Katoliskih Skavtinj in Skavtov (ZSKSS), founded in 1990). This enables individual members of ZSKSS to participate in international Scout events and meetings.

History of AI Activities in Slovenia
Research in Artificial Intelligence in Slovenia started in 1972 at the Computer Science Department of the Jozef Stefan Institute (JSI) in Ljubljana , and later also at the Faculty of Computer and Information Science (FRI), University of Ljubljana . The AI Laboratory at JSI (now Department of Intelligent Systems ) and AI Laboratory at FRI were formally founded in 1979 and 1981, respectively. Both research groups are lead by Professor Ivan Bratko and closely cooperate. Initially, research was concerned with heuristic search, including knowledge-based approaches to computer chess. The emphasis then gradually shifted and expanded to the areas of machine learning, knowledge representation, computer-aided multi-attribute decision making, qualitative reasoning and modelling, and combinatorial optimisation. This provided a solid basis for later application projects. In 1982, the development and implementation of AI tools started and soon resulted in practical applications. By now, over 60 application oriented projects were accomplished in a number of domains including: financial, management, project/enterprise assessment, metallurgy, geology, mechanical engineering, civil engineering and medicine. Most of the applications were based on Assistant Professional , an inductive learning system, and DEX , a computer-aided decision making system. These two systems, developed by the Jozef Stefan Institute AI Laboratory, are also commercially available. Several other systems have the status of academic software, including

http://home.hetnet.nl/~rjs25/hoofdmap/mountaineering.htm
History of mountaineering in Slovenia The first Slovenian alpinist was Valentin Stanic (1774-1847) who counted numerous first ascents to Austrian mountains. In 1800, he performed measurements on Grossglockner (3797m), in 1801 he was on Hocheck, in 1808 as the fourth person to climb Triglav. He was among the first mountain climbers that `walked' around without a guide. At the end of the 19th century, the joint German-Austrian Mountaineering Society (DÖAV, Deutsch-Österreichischer Alpenverein, merged in 1874) had five sections (outlets): in Kranj, Maribor, Celje, Villach and Trieste. Foreign mountain climbers marked German paths and built German mountain huts on our territory, which the Slovenian hikers were not allowed to use. They were very few Slovenian hikers at that time: Franc Kladnik (1925-1908) was one of them, a never-tired solo walker. But the first initiative to establish a Slovenian mountaineering organisation came already in 1872 from Ivan Zan from Srednja vas in Bohinj. The society of `The Friends of Triglav' had one primary goal: to take care of the `Triglav Temple', i.e. a bivouac on Prodi, the first little mountain hut in the immediate vicinity of Triglav. But the foreign authorities prevented this Society to be formed. Two great fans of our mountains were dr. Johannes Frischauf
