But it was not until 1972 that a young Soviet athlete, Olga Korbut stepped into the Olympic spotlight and changed the face of the sport forever. Until Korbut, the stars of women's gymnastics were mature, conservative, technically sound veterans in the twenties or early thirties. Today's gymnasts are young risk-takers with a keen competitive spirit and a passion for perfection. This nonfiction book profiles eight of the world's best female gymnastsSimona Amanar, Vanessa Atler, Dominique Dawes, Ling Jie, Svetlana Khorkina, Kristen Maloney, Shannon Miller and Dominique Moceanu. Chapters giving a brief overview of the sport are also included. This is a great reference book for school or library, and or a gift book for the budding gymnast! It is part of the "Women of Sports" series. 1999, Millbrook Press, Ages 8 to 12, $22.90 and 6.95. Reviewer: Dianne Ochiltree

Queen of Ice, Queen of Shadows : The Unsuspected Life of Sonja Henie

by Raymond Strait and Leif Henie [Paperback]
Olympics figure skater Sonja Henie was born in Oslo, Norway in 1912. She died in 1969 Sonja Henie won world championships ten times. She also won Olympic gold medals for ladies' figure skating three times. At the Olympics events in St. Moritz, Switzerland, in 1928, Henie took the gold, Fritzi Burger of Austria won the silver medal, and Beatrix Loughran of the United States won the bronze. Again in 1932, in Lake Placid, New York, the gold and silver medals went to Henie and Burger, but this time Maribel Vinson of the United States won the bronze. In 1936, in Garmisch, Germany, the winners of the gold, silver and bronze were Sonja Henie of Norway, Cecilia Colledge of Great Britain, and Vivi-Anne Hulten of Sweden. At 12-years-old, in 1924, Henie entered the Olympics for the first time. She is often remembered for that event for being the first female skater to wear a short dress.

Review by Irene Gordon.
Not only will Super Skaters be of great interest to avid figure skating fans, but it will also be very useful for school research projects. The book is introduced by a history of figure skating, from the first use of animal bones as skate blades some 4000 years ago, to the use of metal blades in Holland in the 14th Century, to the founding of the first skating club in the world in Scotland around 1650, to the present. As well, there is a description of how skaters prepare their programs, illustrated explanations of how the various jumps are done, a listing of the Olympic gold medalists in the four skating disciplines (men's, women's, pairs and ice dance), and an explanation of how competitions are judged. "As more and more people in Europe and North America discovered the pleasures of skating, they began to skate together on ponds and lakes. The first skating club in the world, the Edinburgh Skating Club in chilly Scotland, came into being around 1650. To join the club, you had to be able to skate in a circle on one foot, then on the other foot, then jump over a pile of three hats. Perhaps these tricky exercises could be considered the first skating competition. "(Page 3) While the above-mentioned sections are perhaps the most useful parts of the book, most people will be attracted to the book primarily for the pictures and biographical information on 21 of today's top figure skaters, including Canadians Elvis Stojko, Isabelle Brasseur, Lloyd Eisler, Shae-Lynn Bourne, and Victor Kraatz. The biographies are kept to one page in length. While the full page colour photos show the skaters in action, some of them, however, seem slightly out of focus or have poor colour quality.

"Wrecker Becker" New York Enforcers
5'3" 125 lbs.
Birthday: February 21, 1965
"You can tell I'm having a good time!"
Amy got her nickname from her former co-workers. "When everyone heard I was doing this, they started calling me 'Wrecker Becker.' I was a human resources representative at a sportsplex, and I'd be walking down the hall and people would just walk up and block me! You're not prepared for that at another job!"
But Amy was prepared for that in RollerJam. She started skating at roller rinks as a kid and eventually got into speed skating. She was in a race at Disney Celebration and got third overall in a 10k, but mostly she just skates for fun. "I chase bikers, just pick people out on the trail and try to keep up or pass them or see if they can catch me."
Amy loves to play all kinds of sports, but she is not a spectator. "There are five kids in my family, and when football games were going on, we were usually out in the front yard. I have two brothers and two sisters, and I have a stepbrother. I am the fourth child, and I have two older brothers. We didn't play flag football when we were kids; it was all tackle. So growing up you had to learn to defend yourself. We had our own boxing gloves; we would box, we would play football and all kinds of sports. Sports have always been a part of my life." And it seems sports always will be. Her degree is in recreation, with a minor in coaching.

LJ Collection Development-She Got Game! Women in Sports By Kathy Ruffle 7/15/2002
Features > LJ Collection Development Women's sports have finally come of age in America. Baby boomers can remember, only 20 to 30 years ago, when female college basketball players played in obscurity, coaches of women's teams were unpaid, and figure skaters and tennis players were the rare women athletes seen on TV. Nowadays, if you drive by your local soccer field, you'll often see more girls than boys. Long-established women's pro leagues in golf and tennis have been joined by strong ones in basketball and soccer, while pro leagues in ice hockey, softball, and football are fast emerging. A number of studies have demonstrated that participation in sports has many benefits for girls, from better grades to lower rates of teen pregnancy and improved self-esteem.
