Very Highly Recommended
GREAT WOMEN IN SPORTS came out in 1996 before the Summer Olympics. This book has a great selection of great women athletes, some of whom added to their achievements in the '96 Summer Olympics and the one thing lacking in the book was that these achievements were not covered. I wish the book had come out after the Olympics so this information could have been included and I could have read more about great women athletes profiled in the book, such as: gold medal winning gymnasts: Amy Chow, Dominique Dawes, Shannon Miller and Dominique Moceanu, softball gold medalist Lisa Fernandez, swimming gold medalists Amy Van Dyken and Angel Martino, track Olympic medalists, Gwen Torrence and Jackie Joyner-Kersee, and soccer gold medalist Mia Hamm, among the many Olympians profiled. The contents are easy to read, and it is easy to pick and choose the athlete you might want to go back and read about. The book lists each athlete in alphabetical order, thus sports of many kinds are mixed together. The contents also has a section called "Who Plays What", and if you want to read about a certain sport, for example, gymnastics, you will see all the athletes profiled together, and the pages they can be found, for example, under gymnastics: Amy Chow-page 79, Nadia Comaneci-page 95, Dominuqie Dawes-page 109, etc. in alphabetical order ending with Kim Zmeskal-page 539. The introduction by the author starts out, "Hard work and high ambition. Those are the two driving characteristics of the great women athletes in this book." I found this to be true as I read about the women athletes.

Amie Allnutt

Amie Allnutt, a member of Redwood Artistic Club in Redwood City, is a Regional competitor in Sophomore Pairs with partner, Andy Minieri. Amie also competes freestyle events. A student at Del Mar High School in San Jose, Amie began skating only seven years ago when her mother started her in "star" (beginner) classes. She enjoys skating for the space and freedom she feels when she skates and for the opportunity it gives her to keep in shape while having fun. When not skating, Amie can be found hanging out with friends or participating in school activities. Logan Boggs
Antoine Brooks

Antoine Brooks, a coach at Redwood Artistic Club in Redwood City, has been skating for "years," although, he declines to say just how many. During his competitive career, he made finals at Regionals and at Gold Skate Classics with his splashy jumping style. In addition to Artistic skating, Antoine played professional roller hockey with the Sacramento River Rats, and still plays for enjoyment and coaches. He also has started coaching Artistic skaters at Santa Clara. He is drawn to the concentration skating requires and to the challenge. He enjoys pushing the limits. When not on skates, Antoine can be found on a softball field, playing basketball or snowboarding - if it's a sport, he's probably into it.

Encyclopedia: Speed Skating Short Track It's been called the demolition derby of the Olympics. In short-track speed skating, competitors squeeze into a tight oval track measuring just 364 ft (111 m) around. At full speed, they jockey for position and often bump one another. Spills are frequent and sometimes nasty. Though short-track speed skating dates back to the late 1800s, the sport didn't become an officially recognized Olympic event until the 1992 Albertville Games The competition consisted of four events in 1992, but has been expanded to eight in 2002:

The men's competition had fewer surprises. Alexei Yagudin was the clear winner; the brilliant Russian skater left his competitors behind with his flawless, artistic routines. Yagudin's fellow countryman and bitter rival, Evgeni Plushenko, took the silver medal, while the United States' Timothy Goebel earned the bronze with his clean routines and effortless quadruple jumps. Learn About the Problem
Figure skaters look so graceful as they glide and leap on the ice, making their rigorous routines appear effortless. But there are actually many forces at work while figure skating. During any major figure-skating competition, we start speaking a language that includes terms such as "triple salchow," "toe loop," and "lutz." These are the names of complex jumps that skaters perform by manipulating their skate blades in very precise ways.

Short Track Team Members Qualify for World Cup Competition Eagan, Minn. (Oct. 18, 1998) - Members of the U.S. Short Track team secured a spot on the World Cup team this weekend at the American Cup I held in Eagan, Minn. from Oct. 17-18, a qualifying meet for the remaining four of the six World Cups this season. Ron Biondo (Broadview Heights, Ohio) and Apolo Ohno (Seattle, Wash.) both joined the team for the men, and Sarah Williams (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) joined the team for the women. It was once again domination by U.S. teammates Amy Peterson (Maplewood, Minn.) and Erin Porter (Saratoga Springs N.Y.) , who both had a bye because of their top finishes in the last two World Cups. The pair swept the women's events to give them a number one and number two overall finish. Peterson finished first in the 1500-meters, 500-meters and 1000-meters and finished second to Porter in the 3000-meters. Porter finished second in all of her events except for her win in the 3000-meters. Ohno, the young inliner who crossed over from inline skating to speedskating in 1993, finished on top of the men despite a disqualification because of a pass in the 1000-meter race. Ohno finished first in the 1500 and the 500 and second in the 3000. Biondo had his best finishes this season, placing second overall to earn his World Cup spot. Biondo finished second in the 1500, 500, and 1000, and seventh in the 3000 meters.

The U.S. women finished third overall in the team standings for this World Cup series. The U.S. has had a stellar season, winning nine individual medals and five relay top-three finishes. Porter finished fourth and advanced to the finals, where she finished sixth.

Skaters and autobiographies
Homophobia affects all male skaters, regardless of their personal sexual orientation. Many assume that all male skaters are gay; even when individual male skaters are known to be straight, they are frequently the target of anti-gay slurs just for being in the sport. When it comes to autobiography or authorized biography, male skaters have taken a number of approaches to this phenomenon. In a few cases, the silence has spoken loudly. Of the male skater autobiographies Rainbow Ice is aware of, only one, Icebreaker: the Autobiography of Rudy Galindo , with Eric Marcus, acknowledges the subject as gay. Another, Toller Cranston's Zero Tollerance , with Martha Lowder Kimball, describes a same-sex rendezvous, although Cranston does not identify as gay or bisexual. Of the other male skater autobiographies, there are a few which employ a curious "don't ask, don't tell" strategy. It cannot be easy to decide to collaborate with a writer on the story of one's life while omitting any mention of a love life whatsoever, but this is the choice made by Brian Orser in his 1988 book A Skater's Life with Steve Milton, and by the 1998 authorized biography

It's not Babe Ruth, but Babe Didrikson Zahariasthe greatest woman athlete of all time. Few men, if any, have ever bested her feats in sports from track and field to golf. Babe broke barriers for women. Contrary to Aver Brundage's belief that women had no place in sports, Babe proved that women could sweat, succeed, set new records and still enjoy dancing at night. Freedman presents Babe as a complete and complex person. Terrific photos show her in action. She was a one-woman team! If Babe is the tops in sports, Freedman holds that same honor in the field of photobiography. His books are "must reads" for all ages. 1999, Clarion, Ages 10 up, $18.00. Reviewer: Jan Lieberman
ISBN: 0-3956-3367-2 The Best of the Best in Gymnastics
Rachel Rutledge Women gymnasts have always possessed precision, power and grace. But it was not until 1972 that a young Soviet athlete, Olga Korbut stepped into the Olympic spotlight and changed the face of the sport forever. Until Korbut, the stars of women's gymnastics were mature, conservative, technically sound veterans in the twenties or early thirties. Today's gymnasts are young risk-takers with a keen competitive spirit and a passion for perfection. This nonfiction book profiles eight of the world's best female gymnastsSimona Amanar, Vanessa Atler, Dominique Dawes, Ling Jie, Svetlana Khorkina, Kristen Maloney, Shannon Miller and Dominique Moceanu. Chapters giving a brief overview of the sport are also included. This is a great reference book for school or library, and or a gift book for the budding gymnast! It is part of the "Women of Sports" series. 1999, Millbrook Press, Ages 8 to 12, $22.90 and 6.95. Reviewer: Dianne Ochiltree
