    Sinusitis
    What is sinusitis?
You're coughing and sneezing and tired and achy. You think that you might be getting a cold. Later, when the medicines you've been taking to relieve the symptoms of the common cold are not working and you've now got a terrible headache, you finally drag yourself to the doctor. After listening to your history of symptoms, examining your face and forehead, and perhaps doing a sinus X-ray, the doctor says you have sinusitis. Sinusitis simply means your sinuses are infected or inflamed, but this gives little indication of the misery and pain this condition can cause. Health care experts usually divide sinusitis cases into
    • Acute, which lasts for 3 weeks or less Chronic, which usually lasts for 3 to 8 weeks but can continue for months or even years Recurrent, which is several acute attacks within a year
Health care experts estimate that 37 million Americans are affected by sinusitis every year. Health care workers report 33 million cases of chronic sinusitis to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention annually. Americans spend millions of dollars each year for medications that promise relief from their sinus symptoms.

    Sinusitis
Most colds – infection with one of the common cold viruses – cause a stuffy or "bunged up" nose, which clears up within a few days. But if the sinuses become inflamed, other symptoms such as headache and painful swelling of the face may develop. Sinusitis may only last a few days (acute sinusitis), or it may be an ongoing problem that, without treatment, never completely goes away (chronic sinusitis). Acute sinusitis is common in the UK, affecting approximately 3 in 1000 people. Chronic sinusitis is less common and affects about 1 in 1000 people. Babies under one don’t get sinusitis because their sinuses are not fully developed, but it can otherwise affect people of any age.
    The sinuses
The sinuses are hollow air-filled spaces in the skull bones. They’re connected to the nose and lined with the same membrane, called mucous membrane, which produces a slimy secretion (mucus) to keep the nasal passageways moist and trap dirt particles.

Reflux Disease May Cause Sinusitis and Damage Teeth
A review of studies by Medical College of Wisconsin physicians suggests that gastric acid refluxed up the esophagus may damage structures other than the esophagus and result in various health conditions including sinus infections and eroded teeth and gums. Reza Shaker, MD Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology (Vol.30s, pp.535-538). There is clear evidence in both healthy as well as GERD patient populations that refluxed gastric acid may come in contact with structures as high as the pharynx. The pharynx is the cavity leading from the mouth and nasal passages ultimately to the esophagus. In GERD patients, the frequency and the contact time of the acid with mucous membranes in the pharynx is much greater. A history of regurgitation in which stomach contents are refluxed into the mouth particularly at night, associated with cough, is a significant clue to the possibility of GERD complications that reach beyond the esophagus. A history of repetitive throat clearing, recurring hoarseness (particularly in the morning), and bad breath may be symptoms of acid reflux-related conditions extending beyond the esophagus. In one study, only 43% of patients suspected of ear/nose/throat complications from GERD had classic symptoms of heartburn, regurgitation, or difficulty swallowing.

Sinusitis and Sinus Infections? Sinus infections afflict about 37 million Americans every year. Sinusitis is so widespread that Americans with the problem miss an average of four work days a year. There are over 500,000 sinus surgeries performed each year. Sinusitis Sinusitis is an acute or chronic inflammation of the nasal sinuses. The nasal sinuses are the hollow cavities found within the cheek bones and near the eyes. The inflammation of the nasal sinuses is usually triggered by inadequate draining due to allergies, infections or structural problems of the nose such as narrow drainage passages or a deviated septum. Chronic Sinusitis Chronic Sinusitis refers to inflammation of the sinuses that lasts for 4 months or more. Allergies are frequently associated with chronic sinusitis. People with

Sinuses Sinusitis Alternative names Return to top Acute sinusitis; Sinus infection; Sinusitis - acute Definition Return to top Sinusitis is a disorder of the sinuses surrounding the nose, where one or more of these sinuses are inflamed. Acute sinusitis typically lasts 3 to 8 weeks, whereas chronic sinusitis lasts longer. Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top There are 4 pairs of sinuses connected to the nasal cavity by small openings called (ostia). Nasal sinuses are small mucous-lined pockets within the facial bones surrounding the nose. Normally, these sinuses make mucus that drains from the sinuses into the nose while air passes freely in and out. Sinusitis (inflammation of the sinuses) occurs when at least one of three conditions is manifest: (1) The small openings (ostia) from the sinuses to the nose are blocked; (2) small hairs (cilia) in the sinuses that help move the normally produced mucous out are not working; and (3) too much mucous is produced, often simply a result of inflammation. Any combination of these may cause sinusitis. Sinusitis affects approximately 3 out of 1,000 people, and develops in approximately 31 million Americans alone each year. Some people never get sinusitis, and others develop sinusitis frequently (especially patients with

Sinusitis What are sinuses? What is sinusitis? What causes sinusitis? What are the signs of acute sinusitis?
A cold that starts to get better and then gets worse may be a sign of acute sinusitis. Pain or pressure in some areas of the face (forehead, cheeks or between the eyes) is often a sign of blocked sinus drainage and can be a sign of acute sinusitis. Pain in your forehead that starts when you lean forward can also be a sign. Other symptoms may include a stuffy nose, fever, thick green or yellow nasal mucus, and an ache in your upper teeth. How is acute sinusitis treated? See the box below for other things you can do to feel better when you have acute sinusitis. Tips on taking care of sinusitis
    • Get plenty of rest. Lying down can make your sinuses feel more stopped-up, so try lying on the side that lets you breathe the best.
    • Sip hot liquids and drink plenty of fluids.
    • Apply moist heat by holding a warm, wet towel against your face or breathing in steam through a cloth or towel.
    • Talk with your doctor before using an over-the-counter cold medicine. Some cold medicines can make your symptoms worse or cause other problems.
