Sexually Transmitted Diseases: 15 Million Every Year
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) have a significant health and economic impact on the US population. In 1998 a panel of experts convened by the American Social Health Association (ASHA) for the Kaiser Family Foundation calculated that approximately 15 million new STDs are acquired annually by Americans. Of the top 10 most frequently reported infections, five are STDs. Most Americans are unaware of the extent of the STD epidemic, however, because many infections have no symptoms, and because social stigma prevents open discussion of the topic. These asymptomatic infections can be diagnosed only through testing. Unfortunately, says ASHA, routine screening programs are not widespread, and social stigma and lack of public awareness concerning STDs often prevents open discussion between health care providers and patients, leaving most STDs undiagnosed. April of 2002 is National STD Awareness Month, and ASHA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are hoping to prevent STDs – or at least stop their increase – by informing people about the true costs of this silent epidemic.

Issues in Brief Sexually Transmitted Diseases Hamper Development Efforts
I
mproving the health conditions of individuals and families in the developing world has long been a priority for American humanitarian aid. As a result of 30 years of U.S. assistance, maternal and infant death rates have dropped in many regions, significantly more couples are using contraceptives to plan their families and more children are living past their fifth birthday. Nevertheless, despite the tremendous progress brought about by investments in maternity care, family planning, child immunization and better nutrition, one crucial element of maternal and child health has been sorely neglected: the prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Historically, STDs have also been overlooked in the global fight against infectious diseases; as a result, they continue to drain the lives of young and old throughout the developing world. STDs are a serious problem not only because they are widespread, but also because they may have delayed, long-term consequences, including poor maternal health, ectopic pregnancy, infant illness and death, cervical cancer, infertility and increased susceptibility to HIV. Millions of men and women suffering these and other effects of STDs are hindered in their ability to provide for their families and contribute to their society. For countries struggling to develop economically, the health and economic costs are immense. The toll of STDs also hampers U.S. international aid. American assistance aimed at improving educational, health and economic conditions overseas becomes less effective, and therefore more costly, when a substantial proportion of recipients are suffering from STDs. Thus, although this is not always well understood by policymakers and the public, the United States has a considerable stake in combating the burgeoning STD epidemic in developing countries. This

Some STDs, such as Herpes and Genital Warts, can be transmitted through kissing and caressing or close contact with infected areas. STDs can be serious and painful and may have long-term health consequences including sterility, chronic infection, scarring, cancer and death. Please remember that students at Princeton are no less likely to be infected with an STD than anyone else - SECH treats students with STDs every year.

Honest, accurate answers about sexually transmitted diseases, teenagers and young adults in the United States today.
http://www.coolnurse.com/std.htm
T he general term sexually transmitted disease ( STD ) is applied to any of the group of diseases that can be spread by sexual contact. (Sometimes now called STI). The group includes conditions that used to be called venereal diseases (VD), named after Venus, the goddess of love. (A name your parents probably knew when they were your age). E v ery year more than 12 million cases of sexually transmitted diseases are reported in the United States. At least 3 million among them are from teenagers . STDs are spread from one person to another through intimate sexual contact such as sexual intercourse, oral-genital contact, or anal sex. You can NOT get STDs from toilet seats , doorknobs, or from shaking someone's hand. It is estimated that one out of four people between the ages of 15 and 50 will get an STD during their lifetime. You can not tell if a person has a STD from just looking at him or her, even if they are naked. T he impact of STDs is particularly severe for women. Since many STDs often cause few or no symptoms in women, they may go untreated. Women are at serious risk for complications from STDs. Some of these complications include: ectopic (tubal) pregnancy, chronic pelvic pain, infertility.

National AIDS Policy Introduction Source of Infections in AIDS cases in India Objectives of AIDS Policy Strategy of AIDS Policy ... Conclusion Control of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) The large prevalence of STDs in Indian population is cause for concern as presence of STDs, specillay with ulcer or discharge, facilitates transission of HIV infection. The risk of transmission is 8 to 10 times higher in case of persons with STDs compared with others. As the risk behaviour of persons with STDs and HIV is the same, Govt. Of India attaches top priority to the prevention and control of STDs as a strategy for controlling the spread of HIV/AIDS in the country. The following approach will be adopted by the Government for STD control:-
  • Management of STDs through syndromic approach would be incorporated into the general health service. Once the STD case management is integrated in peripheral helath system, unnecessary referral could be avoided leaving the specialised services free for managment of complicated cases and operational research and supervision of sites where STD patients are treated.

Pubic Lice which is also known as crabs is not necessarily a sexually transmitted disease. The lice are six-legged parasites that live and lay eggs in the pubic area. Symptoms It may take several weeks for you to find out that you have pubic lice, because it takes them a while to breed. The most obvious symptom is itching, which usually occurs at night. Treatment
    2. Dead Nits: Wait 3 or more hours after Nix treatment is completed before removing the dead nits. (Reason: let Nix permeate the nits) The nits can be loosened using a mixture of half vinegar and half warm water. After wetting the hair with this solution, cover the hair with a towel for 30 minutes. Then remove the dead nits by backcombing with a fine-tooth comb or pull them out individually.
    3. Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Women who are pregnant or who are breastfeeding can be treated with products containing permethrin (e.g. NIX) according to the Centers for Disease Control.
    4. Contagiousness: Pubic lice are very contagious. Pubic lice are transmitted by skin to skin contact during sexual intercourse (they cannot jump). You should have no sexual intercourse until 2 weeks after successful treatment.

    HIV/AIDS
One of the most severe transmitted diseases is HIV, which stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. This is the virus which ultimately causes AIDS. If someone is HIV positive, they have been infected with the virus that causes AIDS. Most people who are HIV positive go on to develop AIDS, but it may take many years before they have full-blown AIDS. During this time they may feel well, but still can infect other people, by giving blood or having sex with someone. AIDS stands for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome which is a collection of symptoms associated with HIV infection. Symptoms HIV causes the destruction of the immune system. It destroys the body's white blood cells which are called the T-cells. The T-cells is essential to the effectiveness of the body's immune system. So, consequently the body's natural defense system is impaired. The early symptom of HIV includes weight loss, fever, swollen lymph nodes, fatigue, minor illnesses and infections. Some other signs may be pneumonia and Kaposi's sarcoma, a rare skin cancer. Treatment At this time there is no known cure for HIV/AIDS. Right now most doctors agree that if you are infected with HIV, you will die of AIDS. There are various drugs that may slow the virus. So far no one has recovered from having AIDS.
