Brulé's first trip outside the United States solidified many of her beliefs and intensified her determination to make a difference in the world. In the summer of 1997, through the National Federation of Temple Youth's Exodus program, she spent six weeks in Israel. While many of the other teens on the trip focused on socializing within the group, Brulé, always a deep thinker, was consumed with considering what struck her most about Israel, "the violence of the society, the high amount of hatred there, and how the deep-seeded conflict affects people's lives on a daily basis."
Her concentration on Africa developed through coursework both at MHC and at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst (through the Five College exchange), where she has worked closely with Ralph Faulkingham, the chair of the anthropology department.

Leopold Senghor (r) meets China's Chairman Mao in 1974
Leading statesmen from Africa and beyond paid tribute to the Senegalese poet president Leopold Senghor after his death was announced. A hush fell on a summit of African leaders discussing regional cooperation and the creation of a single currency at an ECOWAS summit in Dakar, Senegal. Outgoing ECOWAS president and Malian leader Alpha Konare asked the delegates to observe a minute's silence in memory of "Senghor, the eulogist of the black condition, man of francophony and statesman."
Senghor was the eulogist of the black condition
Malian president- Alpha Konare "He was a fighter for Africa and for freedom," Mr Konare said of Senghor, the founding father of Senegal and one of Africa's best known poets, who had died in France aged 95. The Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade declared 15 days of national mourning.

Senegalese Music When conversations on Senegalese music and culture arise, among the figures that are very often referred to, three are outstanding: Youssou Ndour, Baaba Maal, and Ismael Lo. People often refer to them, because these three musicians bring the uniqueness of Senegalese culture to the world through music. The main themes of their songs are about unity, work, peace, love, children and women.
Ismael Lo

Known also as the King of Mbalax (Senegalese music), Youssou Ndour is today the most acclaimed ambassador of his country's culture. His commitment and respect for his heritage have placed him in public prominence. Through his music, he has been able to fix the richness of Senegalese Wolof culture, blending traditional rhythm with world music into a powerful and eloquent sound. Ndour sings in French, Wolof, and

The Republic of Senegal is a West African country that shares borders with Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mali and Mauritania. The country of Gambia is surrounded by Senegal along the Gambia river. Senegal has a population of over nine million people . Its capital is Dakar.
One specialty of artisans in Senegal is the art of painting on glass. Reverse-glass painting, painting on the back of a clear piece of glass, has been popular in the Senegal since the late eighteen hundreds. In this predominately Islamic country, some of the most popular subjects are portraits of religious leaders called marabouts. (A marabout is a Muslim leader and teacher who offers spiritual guidance.) Other popular subjects are drawn from the Koran and the Bible, such as Noah's Ark. Visit "The Senegalese Gallery" in Exploris' People and Places exhibit. There you can be immersed in an installation of Senegalese life and culture. The Senegal Gallery features 4 video monitors, contemporary artifacts, environmental references and actual environments in Dakar, Senegal.
Family members from Senegal invite the visitor into their home, to school, to worship, and to work, as they describe issues that are important to them, the kinds of changes they have experienced in their neighborhoods and family, and what is important to them. Exploris hopes that this contemporary glimpse of every day life in a Senegalese city will help to pave a road of understanding and common ground between our visitors and the Senegalese.

The Joko Project will offer Internet access to the people of Senegal.
Feb. 2001 Opportunity knocks in strange places. The West African country of Senegal faces desertification in the north and rebellion in the south. The average citizen is illiterate and earns the equivalent of about $40US per month from fishing or growing peanuts. Yet Hewlett-Packard sees opportunity in Senegal. And HP 's World e-Inclusion program , which seeks to help the 4 billion people in the world who live on less than $2 a day, will make Senegal the focus of its largest project to date. It is all part of a strategy is to create economically sustainable ventures where many in the developed world least expect them - on the other side of the "digital divide." an alliance for change By sub-Saharan standards, Senegal has much to offer. The government has ended one-party rule, and the national telephone monopoly is preparing for liberalization. Though the benefits are unequally distributed, economic growth is nearly 5 percent.

The French Colony
After the slave revolt in Saint-Domingue, which began in 1791 and resulted in the independent nation of Haiti, the French slave trade declined until, in 1848, France outlawed slavery. The French made several failed attempts to find alternative sources of profit. During the 1830s the French extended their network of trading posts to the southern Casamance region. Finally, during the 1840s, peanuts grown in the central region proved a lucrative export crop. In 1879 the French launched a second campaign of expansion. They built a series of rail lines that facilitated French domination by moving troops inland and bringing peanuts to French-controlled ports. Africa's first railroad connected Dakar to Saint-Louis and to major peanut-growing regions. After three years of fighting to build the railroad through Cayor, the French finally reconquered the state in 1886. After the defeat of the Wolof rulers, who maintained traditional religious beliefs, many Wolof turned for leadership to Ahmadu Bamba Mbake, a Wolof Muslim cleric. Ahmadu Bamba founded the Muridiyah brotherhood, which converted many Senegalese to Islam and is today the largest and most important Islamic brotherhood in Senegal. Though the French initially feared the authority of Ahmadu Bamba and other powerful marabouts, they eventually sought to cooperate with these leaders, whose doctrines furthered the commercial interests of the French. Ahmadu Bamba and other marabouts urged their rural followers to work hard raising peanuts and to show their devotion by donating their income to the Muridiyah, who steadily gained influence in Senegal's interior.

The Casamance region is affected by insecurity brought about by separatist rebel groups and bandits. Outbreaks of fighting between the rebels and government troops have occurred, particularly along the border with Guinea-Bissau. Even more worrying for travellers was an incident in 2001 involving a busload of 15 tourists held up between Ziguinchor and Cap Skiring. The tourists were robbed at gunpoint and the driver and a local guide on board were killed. There is speculation as to whether this act was committed by the rebels or murderous thieves taking advantage of the unrest in the region. Either way, travellers should ask around for information about the latest no-go areas. Full country name: Republic of Senegal

Senegal is situated on the western bulge of Africa and has borders with Mauritania to the north and northeast, Mali to the east, Guinea and Guinea Bissau to the south and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. It surrounds Gambia on three sides.
The northern part of the Senegal coast is made up of dunes and to the south are muddy estuaries. Behind the coast is a sandy plain, which extends north to the floodplain of the Senegal River. The Casamance Region in the south, isolated from the rest of Senegal by the Gambia, is low but more varied in relief, while to the southeast lie the Futa Jallon foothills, which rise to a maximum altitude of just above 1,600 ft. Much of the northwest of Senegal is semi-desert, but the center and most of the south, except for the forest of Casamance, are open savannah country. The major rivers - the Senegal, Saloum, Gambia and Casamance - flow from east to west.
