Seafood Seasons SEAHORSES and tiny mermaids living amidst gardens of flowing seaweeds and pretty seashells are common in children's fantasies. But unlike mermaids, seahorses are real and exist today. What's more, these bizarre little creatures are actually fishes. Seahorses, pipefish and seadragons are members of the family Syngnathidae, representatives of which are found around the world. There are some 35 species of seahorse, many species of pipefish and only two species of seadragons, both found only in southern Australia. In WA there are only four species of seahorse. The best known is the Western Australian seahorse, Hippocampus angustus, which is found in the Swan River, Cockburn Sound and elsewhere between Exmouth and Augusta.
