Cover of wartime scrapbook compiled in the UK. Scrapbook making has a long and interesting history. During the late eighteenth century, the making of keepsake albums became a fashionable pastime for young ladies of social standing. These early albums were elaborate affairs, bound with a decorative embossed leather cover and fastened with an engraved clasp, lock and brass key. They contained verses, sketches, prints and personal mementoes carefully pasted onto the pages which were often decorated with printed motifs. When the album was complete, it would be placed with great prominence on the drawing room table to be looked at and admired.
Modern English reproductions of late Victorian printed 'scraps'. Scraps gradually became more elaborate with the addition of embossing to make parts of the design stand out in relief from the background. They were still produced in sheet form, but the unprinted parts of the background were cut away with a punch or stamping press during manufacture to leave a sheet of individually shaped images of different sizes connected by narrow paper 'ladders', usually bearing the name of the maker. Before embossing and cutting, the sheets were first finished with a coating of gelatine and gum to give them a shiny, attractive surface. These days, many of these traditional sheets are being reproduced and the making of memory albums (compilations of photographs, invitations and other personal mementoes which are very similar to the eighteenth century keepsake albums) is a hobby which is growing in popularity.

Creating Scrapbooks
Before you even begin to approach the construction of a scrapbook, remember this: Enjoy yourself! Here's an exerpt from Cynthia Hart's book, Scrapbook Workshop. Creating a scrapbook is one of the most powerful ways to celebrate our lives and the lives of loved ones. And the occasions for making a memory album are endless: the joyous birth of a new baby, a romantic, elegant wedding, a long-awaited move to a new house, a fun-filled family vacation, a child's carefree summer at camp, a tribute to a dedicated school group, a pet that's really like a member of the family, and most enduring of all, the preservation of the memory of those you love in a family album that is built over many years. Any event or person close to your heart, any occasion that you especially cherish - all provide perfect reasons to start planning a beautiful, archival album that will ensure that your memories will be preserved for all the years to come. Before you even begin to approach the construction of a scrapbook, remember this: Enjoy yourself. You don't have to be an accomplished craftsperson to reproduce any of the projects in this book. Don't worry about making your album "perfect." And don't feel that you have to do everything at once. Begin by just getting the photo-filled shopping bags out of the closet one afternoon. That's all. The next day, you can take all the photographs out of one bag and begin to sort them into categories.

Noted Victorianist Cynthia Hart turns her talented hand to this wildly popular craft with great success, declaring, "Creating a scrapbook is one of the most powerful ways to celebrate our lives and the lives of loved ones." Hart packs into these pretty pages just about everything you need to know: all the basics, plus full-color glimpses of more than two dozen imaginative scrapbook designs on a wide variety of themes (family milestones, celebrating the past, kid subjects, holidays, and much more). There's also a nice section of clip art, patterns, and templates that can be photocopied for use in your own scrapbooks. This volume is about much more than having fun with your photos; this is a guide to making a book of memories, an artful presentation of memorabilia on whatever subject you choose. Amy Handy Book Description

Making a video scrapbook
Time passes quickly and most people are aware that if scenes aren’t captured on film, a precious opportunity will be lost forever. Besides, it’s lots of fun to look over photographs and watch films and videotapes catching family members during important events. It can be tricky, however. The videotape may be shaky, full of stops and starts, and otherwise hard to watch. The person behind the camera may be so busy preserving the event on tape that he misses out on the fun of the event. Here are some tips to make a video memory for the future without sacrificing your own enjoyment of the present. For major events such as weddings, graduations, ceremonies, or even births, it may be worthwhile to hire a professional videographer or at least enlist the help of a friend whose sole responsibility is to videotape the event. This should be a person who is unlikely to care about not being directly involved in the event itself. If you do hire a friend, of course he should be familiar with the video camera, but he should also be worthy of trust so he doesn’t get sidetracked in the process. Whether you hire a pro or trusted friend, meet with him beforehand to discuss which scenes he should focus on, the length to be taped of certain parts, and which elements are unimportant to you. bodyOffer(24366) If you will be videotaping the event yourself, the first requirement is to become very familiar with the camera. Know which buttons to press for effects such as fading out at the end of scenes, panning in and out, and adjusting light levels. If most of the action will take place in a specific area, you may consider installing the camera on a tripod. This ensures a steady picture, and can help you tape the event while participating as well. Many video cameras come with remote controls for added freedom.

The basics. scrapbook making is a fun and creative craft. You can too!Why scrapbook making is the way to go with your photos Many
http://www.farnellweb.com/honeybear/sshelf/
The basics
Scrapbook making is a fun and creative craft. You can really get creative and present your photos in fun and exciting ways that will really grab the viewer's attention. Since we all go to the trouble and expense of buying film, capturing the perfect "kodak moment" on film and developing...we might as well go to the small extra effort to do it right! There are a few threats to your photos you will want to be aware of:
  • Sunlight
  • Watar and humidity
  • High acid (found in magnetic albums, rubber cement, etc.)
  • Oily, dirty hands
  • Extreme hot or cold temperature
  • Being lost or scratched (from poor storage choices)
Things to keep in mind:
  • Wash your hands before beginning to work on your scrapbook.
  • Try to use acid free papers, adhesives and plastics. (Newspaper is not acid free! If you are saving an article be sure you do not place a photo next to it...you may still save your article, just keep it separate from your photo)
  • Get your photos out of storage in your garage, attic, etc! (Archivists suggest to store them in your bedroom closet!)
  • Do not eat, drink or smoke around your photos or negatives.

Memory book making has become
all the rage and local craft supply
stores have the doo dads and tools
needed to put it all together
By Michelle Ramos
Special to the Star-Bulletin YOU spent $500 on an auto-focus camera that guaranteed perfect shots and another $12 on film and film processing. You took the time to gather everyone for the annual group picture around the Christmas tree, drop off the film and wait for its developing. In exchange, you captured delightful smiles as family and friends tore open Christmas gifts, caught grandma's loving glance toward grandpa as he started his "when I was a little boy we didn't have ... " story, and obtained evidence that dad WAS the culprit who hid the baby's new drum set. Why, then, do these treasures end up hidden in a shoebox or left scattered around the house to deteriorate or be lost forever? People spend so much money on cameras and other photography equipment but don't take care of the photos that result, said Alissa Lee, a consultant with Creative Memories, a nationwide company that sells scrapbooks and related materials. Lee also teaches classes in scrapbook making. Scrapbooking or the creation of "memory books" has made a comeback. With its surge of popularity comes an array of acid-free accessories for scrapbook designers to play with. Walk into any craft store or several Longs Drugs stores and you will find a section dedicated to scrapbook accessories. There are stickers, stamps, colored paper, papers with festive designs, decorative scissors, circle cutters, paper cutters, stencils ... almost anything one needs to help add that "special" touch to a page. And many of the accessories are inexpensive.
