Scottish Country dancing
Yes, Scottish culture is alive and well south of the Channel,
at least as far as the music and dance are concerned.
Clubs are flourishing and multiplying around the country.
And not only ex-pats.
The French have no equivalent tradition of country dancing ,
but when they discover what others do all around the world,
they take up the pas de basque with enthusiasm. You may be interested in seeing
a list of Scottish country dance groups and clubs in France
with contact addresses/phone numbers. or even a calendar of SCD events
planned for 2002-3 in France. Information will be added as I receive news from the various groups. If you feel like a dancing holiday in the hills near Grenoble, take a look at this. A short selection of my own original country dances may be viewed on the web. A second page and a third page of new dance instructions have been added. Try them. You may find them interesting, you will certainly find them challenging! They are taken from
The Rhone Valley dance books and Alpine Valley books of new country dances in the Scottish tradition which have printed instructions and diagrams

What is Scottish Country Dancing?
Scottish Country Dancing is the traditional ballroom dancing of Scotland. Unlike the Highland or National dances, which usually feature solo participants, Scottish Country Dances are social dances, involving couples in groups. From the lively jigs and reels, to the graceful strathspey dances, Scottish Country Dance is composed of formations which are arranged in a different sequence for each dance. Once the basic formations are mastered, dancers are easily able to participate in most dances found on Scottish Country Dance programs. Scottish Country Dance is still a living art form. While some dances performed are the old dances of the past, such as Montgomerie's Rant (which dates from 1747), there are still new dances being created today, like Graduation Day , written by our own Troy McDougal. Over 200 years old, Scottish Country Dancing found its roots in the Country Dances of England and the dances of the French court, but developed its own distinctive Scottish characteristics. The dances were often taught by itinerant teachers, then passed down from generation to generation. Truly the dance of the people, Scottish Country Dance was equally at home in the Laird's castle and the crofter's cottage. While Country Dance began to lose its popularity throughout Europe in the 19th century, the traditional dances still had a firm place on Scottish dance programs up to the outbreak of the First World War. But in the years immediately following the War, popular dances from the States threatened to completely replace Scottish Country Dancing. The Scottish Country Dance Society was formed in Glasgow in 1923, with the aim to practice and preserve Scottish Country Dancing.

Download Acrobat Reader if you cannot open pdf files. Dear friends! This is already the fifth time I invite you to our dance week of Scottish country dances. In the upcoming year we will return to the successful programme of 1998 - we will stay in Prague and its environs for the whole week. We will spend the whole time dancing and getting to know one of the most beautiful European cities. This times we prepared a one day trip during which you´ll admire the most beautiful cultural and historical sights and spend the evening on a typical village farm, where you´ll taste traditional Czech meals and meet the local people. You will meet Czech dancers at the dance classes and possibly find new friends. We will also spend one evening with Czech folklore, which you will find very captivating, I'm sure. All in all, I am persuaded that we will spend a fantastic time together! I look forward to meeting you in Prague!

Scottish Country Dance
Scottish country dance is the ballroom dance of eighteenth and nineteenth century Scotland. Along with English contra dancing, Scottish country dance is a predecessor of the dance form we now know as square dancing. It survives today both as informal ceilidh (party) dancing and as a dance form codified by the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society, based in Edinburgh, Scotland. Several years ago I started taking Scottish country dance classes for recreation and exercise. I find it immensely enjoyable. I have also, at times, found the urge to write new dances irresistible. And I met my wife, Jodi, at SCD class. These pages include new dances that I and Jodi have written, as well as information on the Royal Scottish Country Dance society and links to other SCD-related sites on the Web. NOTE: Not all my dances are listed or posted here as yet. I wanted to get these pages back up here, since their old location (on Primenet) has disappeared as a result of Mindspring/Earthlink swallowing Primenet. I plan to post additional dances as time allows.

They are presented in two versions: the first shows one or two repetitions of the dance with music; the second has pauses between formations with a spoken description; both versions have captions. Any part of the action can be stopped and replayed. There is also a selection of formations alone.
There is no attempt to illustrate steps or technique, only patterns and formations.
I am a member of Gleneagles SCDC in North Vancouver, BC, and have been working to develop these animations since shortly after starting to learn SCD a few years ago, as a logical improvement on printed dance directions in the computer age.

    Scottish Country Dance
