Welcome to the Edinburgh Branch pages! Edinburgh Branch of the RSCDS is dedicated to the enjoyment of Scottish Country Dancing - we run classes at all levels from absolute beginner to very advanced and demonstration level. We organise regular social dancing with live bands. Our demonstration team of highly experienced dancers is available for hire to add local colour to your conference, cruise or any other event, either as part of the entertainment or to run the whole evening for you. Information for members:
The Spirit of Scotland needs you!
Updated 19-Jan-2003 The Spirit of Scotland belongs to the whole of Edinburgh Branch of the RSCDS, so we want to involve more members in the performance - not just dancers. It is fun taking part in the show (ask any of last year's participants) and we would like everyone in the Branch to feel that it is their show. This year's show will be similar in format to last year's i.e. mostly dancing with a few short guest spots. Last year only one of the guests was a Branch member; this year we hope that all the guests wil be Branch members. So if you are an amateur musician or singer or actor or story teller, please get in touch with your committee to discuss what you could do - absolutely without obligation. Even more importantly, if you know of a member who might possibly be persuaded but is too bashful to put themselves forward, please let your committee know (your name will not be revealed). Small music groups, as well as soloists, would be very welcome.

What is Scottish Country Dance?
What Is Scottish Country Dancing, Anyway?
Why should I become a Scottish Country Dancer?
There are many reasons to join in the dance. First and foremost, it's great exercise and a lot of fun! Scottish country dance challenges both the body and the mind. The moves are known in advance, so you don't have to worry about making them up as you go along. Also, you get to meet new people and make new friends! No partner is needed because everyone dances with everyone else. So, come alone or bring a friend. And remember, Scottish country dance is alive throughout the world, so you can join in the fun no matter where you go.

Today we are an International organisation catering to the needs of some 25,000 members. Through the network of local branches, the Society offers opportunities to learn and practise the country dances of Scotland. There are many classes, at all levels, and a great variety of social dances. For members wishing to improve their technique there are workshops and day schools as well as the Society's own Summer School in St. Andrews, Scotland. For the experienced dancer wishing to obtain additional training there are opportunities for members to attend training courses (free of charge). Music is of course essential to the occasion and we also provide specialist courses for accordion, fiddle and piano.
