Welcome to NSSDC's General Public Page! T HIS PAGE is intended to guide members of the general public to NASA/NSSDC data and services most likely to be of interest to the non-researcher/scientist segment of the internet community. Our Role T HE National Aeronautics Space Administration (NASA) carries out its functions through several offices. NASA's Office of Space Sciences sponsors the National Space Science Data Center (NSSDC). NSSDC is primarily responsible for the archiving of space science data from past, present, and future NASA missions. We serve the science community and the general public in areas related to the space sciences (astrophysics and astronomy, solar physics, space plasma physics, lunar and planetary science). N SSDC is not intended as, nor is it, an encyclopedic source of information about NASA, its space activities, or space science in general. We provide data, and such information as we happen to have. There are many alternative sources of information about NASA, its activities, and space; several of these are identified below. Access to NSSDC's online WWW files, data, and information is free; nominal charges are made for dissemination of data on media, as, for instance, NSSDC's Planetary Images CD-ROM.

An Interdisciplinary Unit. The Study of Ecology Using a Local Natural Resource and the Community
Grades
Description
Introduces a unit of study using a local natural resource, the Grand Mere State Park sand dunes in Michigan. Provides an opportunity to investigate an ecosystem from an historical, geologic, environmental and ecological perspective. Provides connections to other disciplines through a multi-faceted curriculum, incorporating science, mathematics, social studies and language arts curriculum activities with special emphasis on data collection, information processing skillls and portfolio writing which may be useful for the writing portion of the high school proficiency test. Focuses on sand dune succession and changes made to the area from the beach to the forest over a period of the past 50 years and how the area has been and will be affected by increased growth in human population. Includes an outline of the 5 unit activities, a unit overview using a Venn Diagram, aerial photographs of the area from 1950 to 1975 and a topographic map to facilitate comparison, lab report guidelines, an assessment rubric indicating the number of possible points attainable, historical background data and instructor's rationale for the study. Also provides links to related Internet sites, bibliographic references, related web sites and resource publications. Note: this online version of the lesson plan does not contain the referenced QuickTime movie due to large file size.
