Frederick County Public Schools Earth and Space Science Laboratory Co-Directors: Mark Bowman and Jeff Grills 250 Madison Street, Frederick, MD 21701
Click Here For Details The Earth and Space Science Laboratory (ESSL) has been a unique part of the Frederick County Public Schools since 1962. This facility serves to enrich and extend the elementary and, upon request, the middle school's science curriculums. More than 17,000 students and 650 teachers participate in various program offerings each year.
This facility houses a planetarium. It is used to teach astronomy to grades 2 and 4. The seating capacity in the planetarium is approximately 72. Oceanography is taught to third graders. Twenty fresh and salt water aquarium and a variety of hands-on activities are incorporated into the third grade oceanography lab. The geology lab features 36 learning stations that cover a wide variety of geological topics. Geology is taught to 5th graders. The meteorology facet of the program utilizes an Automated Weather System and various demonstrations and experiments. 1st graders study meteorology.
A science classroom and a "museum-like"display hallway complete the remainder of this facility.

What's New
Helping Your Children Learn Science
This on-line book provides examples of a few simple activities we can do with our children. It is an introduction to the wealth of material in many other books available in libraries and bookstores. It might also inspire us to make up our own experiments to see why and how things turn out the way they do.

About Temperature
This document was prepared for the middle school math teachers who are taking part in Project Skymath . I do a a few questions about the science but these are personal quibbles. To be commented on later.
Bad Science
Bad Science abounds and comes in many guises. This page sets out to attack only one brand: well understood phenomena which are persistently presented incorrectly by teachers and writers, presumably because they either do not know any better or because they don't really care enough to get it correct.
The Internet Museum of Holography
Holography is the process of creating three dimensional images using lasers. This site has a visitors center, reference library, reading room, on-line intro to holography lesson, educators/students can submit questions, places to see holograms in the U.S. and Canada, information on doing holograms as a hobby, diagrams of lasers, dictionary of terms, and a gallery exhibit.

Bringing Images to Earth from Space
NASA brings us unforgettable images of space that capture our imagination. Especially exciting are the pictures actually taken in space, by spacecraft orbiting distant planets or flying billions of miles accross the solar system at dazzling speeds. Learn more at this educational web site presented by NASA's Deep Space Network. Cassini Kid's Corner A site just for kids, where they can explore the beautiful ringed planet Saturn and learn about the spacecraft currently on the way there. And there is even a model of the Cassini spacecraft to build! Galileo Education The materials gathered in these pages are aimed at K-12 teachers and students for NASA's mission to study Jupiter and it's moons. Multi-angle Imaging Spectro Radiometer (MISR) The Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) is a satellite instrument designed to measure sunlight reflected by the Earth into space, measurements that will contribute to studies of the planet's ecology and climate. This page contains articles, tutorials, fact sheets, and other items of a general education nature related to the science of MISR. New Millennium Program Educational and Public Outreach The New Millennium Program and its Missions focus on such issues as supporting and augmenting good models of existing science education programs rather than creating entirely new ones; identifying specific ways to integrate program and mission content into existing educational delivery systems; and inspiring underrepresented minorities to get involved and stay involved in science.

The Michigan Space Grant Consortium (MSGC) offers a range of opportunities for interested individuals and groups to engage in activities related to science, mathematics, and technology in general, and aeronautics, astronautics, Earth systems and space science in particular The MSGC, formed in 1989, is part of the National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program, sponsored by NASA. This state-wide Consortium is composed of nine affiliate universities and colleges, and is led by the University of Michigan at SPRL. Some of the objectives of the MSGC are to:

    1995 Step Workshop, ERIM/EMU/MSGC, Ann Arbor, Michigan.
  • Continue to strengthen the network of colleges and universities with interests and capabilities in aeronautics, astronautics, Earth systems and space science, and technology, and related fields;
  • Encourage cooperative programs and collaborations among colleges, universities, business and industry, as well as Federal, State and local governments;

(In millions of dollars) Function 250
Actual Estimate
Spending: Discretionary Budget Authority Mandatory Outlays: Existing law Tax Expenditures: Existing law More than half of the Nation's economic productivity growth in the last 50 years is attributable to technological innovation and the science that supported it. Appropriately, the private sector makes the largest investments in technology development. The Federal Government, however, also plays a role. Total Federal research and development would be at an all-time high in inflation-adjusted terms if the President's proposal is approved. Within the General Science, Space, and Technology function, the Federal Government supports areas of cutting-edge science, through the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the National Science Foundation (NSF), and the Department of Energy (DOE). The activities of these agencies contribute to a greater understanding of the world in which we live, ranging from the edges of the universe to the smallest particles, and to new knowledge that may have immediate applications for improving our lives. Because the results of basic research are unpredictable, developing performance goals for this area presents unique challenges. Each of these agencies funds research and contributes to the Nation's cadre of skilled scientists and engineers. As a general goal for activities in this function, at least 80 percent of the research projects will be reviewed by appropriate peers and selected through a merit-based competitive process. Another important Federal role is to construct and operate major scientific facilities and capital assets for multiple users. These include telescopes, satellites, oceanographic ships, and particle accelerators. Many of today's advances in medicine and other fields rely on these facilities. As general goals:
