Rock Salt Mining
Salt occurs naturally in underground deposits , and occasionally in surface deposits in arid areas, as the mineral halite . Ancient salt deposits are widespread. There are ten major salt basins in the western hemisphere, in both North America (for example, Michigan Texas Kansas and New York ) and South America ( ) as well as deposits around the world. A number of these salt deposits are mined for halite, commonly known as rock salt . Salt deposits formed as horizontal salt beds in ancient oceans and were later buried deeply beneath sediments as mountains eroded. Later, some of these buried salt deposits were geologically deformed by tectonic forces within the earth ( salt tectonics help geologists understand other minerals too). Salt domes (diapirs) are a major type of salt structure resulting from tectonic deformation, though off-shore salt basins can also be tectonically active, as off the coast of Brazil . Geologists build complex models of salt deposits ( ). Both bedded salt deposits and salt domes or diapirs are mined by drilling and blasting. The occasional surface deposits can also be mined.

Sciences in 1983 to allow for expanded research activity particularly research that focused on earth resources. The research programs of faculty and graduate students are strongly field-oriented with
emphasis on integrated studies in northeastern North America. Research areas are diverse but with current strengths in and emphasis on: Precambrian geology, Appalachian tectonics, petrogenesis of mineral deposits, ophiolite studies, isotope and analytical geochemistry, paleozoic biostratigraphy, marine geology and geophysics, deep crustal studies and geodynamics.

INTRODUCTION The potential for finding oil fields in the hundred million barrel range in the offshore of the Republic of Guinea Bissau is high. The most prospective portion of the offshore appears to be located in the central portion of the area. Here, excellent Albian reservoir sands, rich, thermally mature Turonian-Cenomanian source beds and a thick Senonian shale top seal all occur together under high relief structural closure on the flanks of shallow piercement salt domes. Other plays related to deep seated salt pillows and listric normal faults are present to the north and east of the salt diapirs. Structural closures on these plays are often large in areal extent. However, previous exploration drilling, while not totally condemning these plays, indicates problems with reservoir quality and with migration pathways. The deep Albian sands encountered in the northern area were tightly cemented and of very poor reservoir quality. The high quality, shallower Maestrichtian sands are separated from the thermally mature TuronianCenomanian source beds by a thick section of Senonian shale. This shale may effectively seal the faults which provide the only potential pathway for oil to get from the source to the shallower reservoir. TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction 1

Research involving structural modeling integrated with seismic analysis and mapping is carried out by two industry-funded consortia, the Applied Geodynamics Laboratory and the Deep-Marine Depositional Margins Alliance, and by research groups carrying out basin analysis. Research topics include salt tectonics and shale tectonics on passive, active, and strike-slip continental margins, especially in West Africa, Trinidad, and the Gulf of Mexico. In addition, another industry-supported group, the Fracture Research and Application Consortium, uses geomechanical and structural-diagenetic models to predict fracture architecture from limited subsurface samples.     Introducing the Salt Mine: An Interactive Atlas of Salt Tectonics Michael R. Hudec Bureau of Economic Geology ABSTRACT
    One of the greatest challenges for any research consortium is effective communication of results to the sponsoring companies. In order to be of practical use, the research must be widely disseminated within companies in a manner that is easy to access and easily understood. In an effort to solve this problem, the Applied Geodynamics Laboratory (AGL) is developing The Salt Mine: An Interactive Atlas of Salt Tectonics. The Salt Mine will run on any platform that supports a web browser. Programming is non-invasive, so no installation or administrator permissions are needed to access the software. Completion of The Salt Mine is expected to take four years, with updated editions issued annually during the construction period. Public release of a smaller version of The Salt Mine is planned following distribution of the completed version to the sponsoring companies in 2004. The presentation will demonstrate the structure, navigation, and contents of first edition of The Salt Mine, including animations.

    Application of salt tectonics to the understanding of granite emplacement 1998, Mike Unger, except for figures 2, 3 and 4 - "Granite is regarded as a ftone of more recent formation than the ftrata incumbent on it: as a fubftance which has been melted by heat, and which, when forced up from the mineral regions, has elevated the ftrata at the fame time" - Playfair, 1802 , pg. 84) INTRODUCTION: The emplacement of granitic rocks has been debated since Hutton first recognized that granites often have an intrusive relationship with their surrounding country rock in his 1795 treatise Theory of the Earth with Proofs and Illustrations (in Playfair, 1802 Brown, 1996 ). The proposal that granitic rocks originate as fluids (magma) derived from partial melting of crustal rocks is now universally accepted; however, the processes by which granitic magmas move upward through the crust of the earth to their level of emplacement are not well understood. Similarly, the deformation of the rocks through which granitic magmas move and into which they are finally emplaced is also poorly understood. Fortunately for hard rock geologists interested in granitic emplacement, the intrusion of salt diapirs into overlying sediments is much more completely understood, as is the deformation of the rocks above and around the salt intrusion. This is due primarily to the hydrocarbons often found in the structures surrounding salt diapirs, which have enticed the petroleum industry to spend many billions of dollars trying to better understand how salt moves and how salt deforms its overburden. However, there are still some parts of salt tectonics which are poorly understood (i.e. the structure that exists beneath a salt canopy). At first glance, it seems that much may be learned about granites and their emplacement through studying the deformation associated with salt tectonics. In much the same way, some of the knowledge gained in studying granitic intrusions may be applicable to unanswered question in salt tectonics.

    One of the sites we will explore during the expedition is called the Brine Pool, which is a small lake on the seafloor with a distinct surface and shoreline. It exists inside of the ocean because its very salty water is denser than the surrounding water. Indeed, the Gulf of Mexico contains brine lakes as small as 1m across and up to 20km long. These lakes are created by a process called salt tectonics, which refers to the movement of large salt deposits.
    Today, the Gulf is a deep basin, but during the middle Jurassic period, it was a shallow sea that became cut off from the world ocean and dried out, producing a thick layer of salts and seawater-derived minerals up to 8km thick. When the region rifted apart, it reopened the ocean connection, stretched the Gulf, and resulted in a dramatic deepening of the basin. During this rifting, the salt layer was broken into a large northern layer termed the Louann Salt Layer that extends underground as far as southern Arkansas and as far south as the base of the continental slope. The fragment in the south, called the Campeche Salt Layer, is much smaller and underlies the slope off western Yucatan. The net result is a continental slope pocketed by ridges and basins. At the edges of the salt layer, tectonic movement tends to be lateral as the weight of sediments presses the layer out. This migrating salt edge is evident in the Sigsbee escarpment of the northwestern Gulf, the steep terminus of the continental slope. Although termed an escarpment, this cliff is quite unlike the carbonate escarpments of west Florida and Campeche. Rather, it is shorter, less steep and muddy.
