Or, Skate Fast and Carry a Big Stick
The history of rolling skating is quite interesting, at least compared to the history of soccer. You're probably thinking that rolling skates were first known to our grandparents, but roller skates are older than the United States of America (talk about some rusty wheels). Belgian manufacturer Joseph Merlin (not associated with Camelot) produced the first roller skates in 1760. He surprised everyone at a formal London ball (that would be a "party") by rolling across the floor (like magic) on metal-wheeled skates while playing (badly, no doubt) a valuable violin. Because of the skate's minor performance limitations (so constructed as to not allow such maneuvers as turning or stopping), Merlin ran into a large mirror, seriously damaging the violin, and inflicting grievous bodily harm to various appendages, and his nose, which made first contact with the glass. This was not only the first public exhibition of roller skating, but was also highly entertaining, and led to more skating. On the negative side, it was rolling skating's first DUI.

    By: Kellie Habeeb
    USA Roller Sports
    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 13, 2002 LINCOLN, Neb. - USA Roller Sports (USARS) held the first annual Congress and Expo in Las Vegas, Nev., from December 5 through December 8, 2002. The event sported a huge success with nearly 350 attendees in roller hockey, figure skating, speed skating, recreation skating and extreme sports as well as 23 exhibitors from across the country. The Congress and Expo, titled Making Our Mark, was the first event of its kind in the history of USARS, which allowed coaches, judges, rink owners, officials, members, non-members and national representatives to meet and gather valuable information on all aspects of roller sports. The event provided a series of workshops and seminars, which included instruction in coaching, sports science, marketing, sponsorships, fundraising, class programs, sports specific rink sessions, membership involvement and commission courses. USARS was fortunate to have two coaching workshops provided by the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) which allowed attendees to explore their leadership strengths and entrepreneurial ventures. Recreational skaters from across the country were given the opportunity to meet and discuss the future molding of the USARS recreation program. The event also gave attendees the opportunity to meet influential representatives in the roller sports industry.
