Hans Holbein, the younger, Typus Cosmographia Universalis
Cultural Maps is dedicated to the graphical presentation of non-graphical information whatever that turns out to mean. At present, it has something to do with maps in the ordinary and normal sense of the term; the immediate goal is to build a digital American Historical Atlas. To the extent that maps serve as guides not only to the physical terrain but also and importantly as charts of the mapmaker's mental and cultural terrain, of the memories and desires, anxieties and assumptions he projects upon any terra incognita, we have begun building an historical geography of America. Eventually, this space will come to include graphs, charts, and images, in fact anything that serves as a concrete and physical representation of abstract ideas and intangible feelings.

  • Age of Exploration. Columbus Landfall . it's hard to believe, but after five hundred years there's still disagreement about just where Columbus first saw the new world and set foot upon its shores. It's a real-life mystery, and you are the detective. No theory is perfect, but we'll review some of the best known theories, and suggest the most likely answer. (You may be surprised.) Conquest of Native America . Spanish Conquistadors traveled from Florida to Chicago to Texas. They were the first Europeans to report inland America. Conquest Records describe Indian Villages at places which are cities today. This site presents those records and describes Native America in the 1540's. Discovery and Exploration. Maps, travel literature, atlases, journals, biographies and more. Exploring Maps 1492 Exhibit . 1492. Columbus. The date and the name provoke many questions related to the linking of very different parts of the world, the Western Hemisphere and the Mediterranean. What was life like in those areas before 1492? What spurred European expansion? How did European, African and American peoples react to each other? What were some of the immediate results of these contacts? 1492: AN ONGOING VOYAGE addresses such questions by examining the rich mixture of societies coexisting in five areas of this hemisphere before European arrival. It then surveys the polyglot Mediterranean world at a dynamic turning point in its development.

The Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Strategic Studies Group (SSG) generates revolutionary naval warfare concepts. Revolutionary implies that the concepts would upset the existing order. Therefore, these concepts are non-consensual. The SSG focuses its efforts on warfighting concepts that appear to have great potential, but Navy organizations are currently not pursuing. In conducting this mission, the SSG is at the leading edge of the Conceptualization Phase of the Process for Naval Warfare Innovation. Revolutionary innovation has been the key to U.S. naval supremacy. A key to past, successful innovations was the iteration of thought between operators, technologists and analysts. The operator brought "unarticulated requirements" to the table. The technologist brought emerging and existing technologies. Analysis blended the two. Only after considerable iteration did new thinking, combining the unarticulated requirement and technology, result in what became major naval warfare innovations. ADM James R. Hogg, USN (Ret)

    The Battle of the Battlefields

    Introduction
Many important battles were fought during America's War for Independence. Commemorating these battles helps to remind us of the tremendous risks and sacrifices that American colonists endured as they struggled for their freedom from British control. We know that the colonists eventually won the war, but the road to victory was by no means an easy one. Until the war finally ended, nobody knew for sure that Britain's powerful military forces could ever be defeated. American soldiers outnumbered the British in most battles, but they were inexperienced in the ways of war and poorly supplied with weapons and other equipment. British forces, on the other hand, were well trained and amply supplied by the English government with good-quality weapons, uniforms, and other equipment. The patriots did finally defeat the British, but along the way several battles ended in defeat and many soldiers lost their lives.
Today, these historic battles continue to shape our remembrances of America's struggle to gain independence. For this reason, the President of the United States has decided that the American people (and also visitors from other countries) should have the opportunity to learn more about the major battles of the War for Independence. He has authorized an award of $1,000,000 for the construction of a new museum at the site of the most important battle fought during the war. The main difficulty, the President has discovered, is determining which battle site should get the money. To make the right decision, the President needs your help!

    Editor's Note
In sounding the death knell of the Cold War, the revolutionary changes in the Soviet Union and in Eastern Europe pose significant challenges to U.S. foreign policy. Some examples are: without the Soviet threat U.S. foreign policy lacks a doctrine for defining its strategic interests; once the Soviet military threat in Europe is removed, the heavy emphasis on NATO in U.S. defense policy ceases to make sense; if the U.S.-Soviet conflict is not our primary strategic concern in Europe, then both the goals as instruments of U.S. foreign policy in Europe require restatement and redefinition. In responding to the events of 1989, the United States has focused on its ideological victory ("the triumph of freedom and democracy") but has not yet seriously initiated a national dialogue on the impact of these revolutionary changes on U.S. foreign policy. Specifically, in this cautious approach, the President has accepted General-Secretary Gorbachev as an authentic reformer, but has done nothing that would risk his own political standing (especially with the right wing of the Republican party) if Gorbachev were to fail. The President has also sought to preserve the consensus within foreign policy and defense bureaucracy, where the demise of cold war thinking is not a foregone conclusion.
