68 Geography reunion - Chris Martins
Around a dozen graduates from the 1965-8 vintage successfully held their second reunion in a pub in Stoke Bruerne, Northamptonshire. In 1999 there were 6 attendees. These 5O-somethings were students during the years when the departmental lecturers included Dr Eyre, Dr Fowler, Glanville-Jones and Prof Birch. Dr Preston and Christine Leigh were also very much in evidence at the time. The geography department was then located in the small building to the right of the new geography department. The Duchess of Kent presented the degrees. The reunion currently takes a simple format -people arrive for lunch and stay for tea. The geographically inclined(!) also wander along the towpath and view the waterways museum in the village. Attendees of the 2000 event were: Shirley Wilson (nee Robson); Diane Johnson (nee Thorpe); Patricia Alizon-Caimer (nee Caimer); Hillary Bradley (nee Todd); Maria Rowell; Wendy Bretherick, Judith (nee Roebuck); Chris Mitchinson; Brian Chalkley; Keith Laidler; Clive Charlton and Chris Martins.

1980s' REUNION - ALISON BANDENBURG
In August 1999 Jackie Stapleton and I finally managed to get together for the first time in 15 years. We had such a laugh talking about our student days in Leeds that we thought it would be fun to try and organise a reunion. Little did we know how difficult it would prove to track down our fellow undergraduates. Still, with a lot of help from both the Alumni Office and the School of Geography, a group of us finally got back to Leeds on 4 November 2000. We met up for afternoon coffee in the School of Geography, now in a much larger building next door to where it used to be. The first, most striking, thing was how instantly recognisable everyone was, despite 20 years passing. It was just great to see everybody looking so well and with the same grin that they had all those years ago. We were met and looked after by John Stillwell, who looked exactly the same. Funnily enough when he began talking we all stopped and started listening. Surely that never used to happen! A display had been put together of our field trip to Montpellier in 1980, the highlight of the course for many of us!

The Passing of Dr. Richard H. Mahard (1915-2002)
The Denison and Granville communities lost a giant figure on 9 April 2002, with the death of Dr. Richard H. MAHARD, at age 86. Beset for more than a year by a tumor in the throat and its complications, Dick's robust constitution finally succumbed. He and Marian, his wife of 60 years, were comfortably cared for at the Inn at SharonBrooke, a retirement and health-care facility in nearby Newark, Ohio. Generations of Denison students, from 1941 through 1980, will recall Dick's richly informative lectures on geography, geomorphology, and the world in general. Whether in class or in conversation, Dick's wealth of information was combined with insight and wit. If an All-Star team of raconteurs exists, Dick has to be on it. Combining perfect elocution with a sparkle in the eye and strong commitment to the topic at hand, Dick could entertain and inform classes and friends on a quite amazing variety of topics. With the passing of Chuck Graham, in March, and Dick Mahard, in April, the Department truly has lost two of its revered members. Those of you who were part of the World War II to 1980 period will appreciate just how significant the losses are.

The 1958 Zoology Class met on 11 May for an excellent lunch at The Dolphin, Below Bar, organised by Dick Barker. This was followed by a tour of the Biological Sciences Department arranged by Dr Robert Walker and given by Niall Horn. Margaret Weiss (nee Edwards) joined the group for the first time from the States. Unfortunately Maureen Bannon (nee O'Shea) and Mike Mann were unable to attend and organisers were unable to trace Mike Reeve and Brian Thompson. If anyone is in touch with them, please contact the Alumni Office. Geology Alumni Fieldtrip, 12th-19th May 2002
The rain in Spain fortunately stayed away!
The first Geology Alumni Reunion Fieldtrip saw 36 people travel to southern Spain for a week in May - to revisit old haunts familiar to most from their Second Year foray in Carboneras on the Cabo de Gata. Although dominated by graduates of the past three years, some of the former Geology undergrads and postgrads traced their Southampton roots back over a decade. It was remarkable how well and how quickly the group gelled - no doubt aided by al fresco dining and copious cervezas. Informality was the order of the day and, blessed with constant sunshine, individual nuclei peeled off and did their own thing. There were only two or three 'organised' activities - a day trip to the Alhambra in Granada, mineral collecting at the Garnet Volcano of El Hoyazo, and scrambling (literally!) through the gypsum caves at Sorbas.

Robert W. Hill Special Project, Summer Term 1999 My interest in the 723rd Railway Operating Battalion (723rd ROB) started in 1996. I have a hobby that is military model railroading and in an attempt to create more realism I decided to contact a former Military Railway Organization. I contacted one of the two Railway Operating Battalions still active in the U.S. Army Reserves, the 757th ROB, in Milwaukee, WI and discussed what I was looking for. I talked to a Sergeant Jackson and he told me that my best bet would be with a veterans group. I obtained a copy of a recent Veteran of Foreign Wars (VFW) magazine and used a telephone contact system that allowed me to get a point of contact for a railroad veteran unit. The ironic thing is that I asked for the 732nd ROB address and was given the 723rd's by mistake. I corresponded with a gentleman named Ray Stevens from Ohio. He was at the time the Commander of the 723rd Railway operating Battalion Association, (723rd ROB ASSN). He sent me an original copy of THE SAGA, a book that was printed in Germany prior to the unit being sent home. I marveled at the stories in it and decided to call him personally and thank him. One thing led to another and I ended up being invited to the unit's 51st Reunion in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, (PA). My wife and I enjoyed the reunion and I made twelve friends that I will never forget. I got a lot of information on the railway service during World War Two, WWII. There were good times and bad times during the reunion. The gentleman that introduced me to the 723rd, Ray Stevens, died of a heart attack during the unit's annual meeting. The reunion carried on, they were Army Veterans after all. What I found amazing was the way that they remembered him during the rest of the reunion. The last happy memory of Ray that I still have is the happiness that showed on his face as the reunion group rode the steam train at Strasbourg, PA, mainly because Ray was an Engineer in the 723rd ROB.

Geography's Silver Reunion Friday 1 November - Sunday 3 November 2002 The year 2002 marks the twenty-fifth year since Plymouth Geography Department's first group of students graduated with their honours degrees. We are therefore marking this major milestone in the Department's history by holding a reunion to which we are inviting all our Geography graduates from the period 1977-2002. We are holding this event on the weekend of 1 - 3 November 2002 and we hope that as many Plymouth Geographers as possible will be able to return to their alma mater and join us to commemorate our anniversary. We are certainly looking forward to renewing old friendships and catching up on news of what has happened to you all. And, of course, this will be an opportunity for graduates to meet others who perhaps they have not seen for years, even decades. It will be a great weekend!! The provisional programme is as follows: Friday 1 November Events will commence with an evening Reception and Buffet to be hosted by the Department (almost certainly followed by a 'late' bar).

July-August 2001 The Republic of Guatemala During my time in Guatemala, I was able to observe the effect of the economy on different groups of people. While I was in Antigua, I lived with very wealthy family who had profited from the growing economy. It was a world of cell phones, expensive cars, and a house staffed with several indigenous domestic workers. On the other hand, in La Labor, I lived among people who were suffering from severe poverty. I saw patients who could not afford food or medication for their children, much less the five Quetzales (less than one dollar) for an office visit. And while traveling around the country, I saw that most of the people (especially the indigenous) lived in poverty, just managing to survive by subsistence farming, while large corporations or wealthy families owned most of the land. It was like living in two different worlds. The government of Guatemala is a Constitutional Democratic Republic. The current constitution was drafted in May 1985 and most recently amended in January 1994. The government is divided into executive, legislative, and judicial branches. The president is elected for a single four-year term. The legislature is a unicameral congress, with 113 members who serve four-year terms. The judicial branch includes thirteen members of the Supreme Court of Justice who serve five-year terms. The country is divided into 22 departments with appointed governors, and the departments are grouped into eight regions with elected mayors and city councils. The current president of Guatemala, Alfonso Portillo, began his term in office in January 2000 .

Golden book History, Geography and Climate of Reunion Island HISTORY Although discovered(found) by the Arabic navigators in the X-th century, the island remained deserted until the arrival of the Frenchmen in the XVII-th century. France not having been able to colonize the big island (Madagascar), she(it) took up this small island at about the year 1640. It is the vessel "Saint Alexis" who landed the first inhabitants. In 1649, the island is called "Bourbon". In 1767, Louis XIV gives up the island to the company of India. At the end of 1793, the beginning of 1794, further to the French revolution, the excitement is born on the island engendering a change of name: "Reunion". From the end of the XVII e century, the first villages build up themselves (Saint-Denis, Saint Paul, saint - Suzanne), whose inhabitants cultivate some coffee(cafe) intended for the metropolis.
