Future Plans ... Atlanta Partners
The partnership began in 1989, with the signing of an agreement between the Republic of Georgia and Emory University in the spring. University Secretary Thomas Bertrand, acting on behalf of President Laney of Emory University, had visited the Republic of Georgia (as it was then called) during Tbilisi State University's 70th Anniversary celebration in October, 1988. The program between Emory and Georgia had three principal aims: To build a lasting bridge between the two academic communities, and to make a long term impact on the quality of education, science and health in the Republic of Georgia.
To provide opportunities leading to graduates at Emory for talented young Georgians. To create opportunities for graduate students and faculty from Emory to incorporate the culture and history of Georgia into their own scholarly fields of reference by building bonds with individuals in Georgia. A history of the relationship between Emory and Georgia has been written by Thomas Bertrand, who is now president of

Early History of the Jews of Georgia
The city of Tbilisi was founded 1,500 years ago. It is the capital of the Republic of Georgia, a former Soviet republic. It is assumed that the first Jews arrived to Western Georgia in the 6 th century, which at the time was ruled by the Byzantine Empire. Part moved to the Eastern Georgian regions, ruled by the Persians, where Jews were tolerated, as opposed to the suppression Jews suffered under the rule of the Byzantine Empire. From the Middle Ages through the first half of the nineteenth century a feudal system existed in Georgia. In this system, Jews belonged to the serf class (persons having a master). In the 18 th and 19 th centuries, Georgia was the scene of many wars. The Jews were deprived from their property. Whereas initially they sought and received protection from the feudal lords, to which they turned to escape immediate danger, the Jews were oppressed by them in a later stage. Being serfs, they were not forced to convert to Christianity.

KARTULI IDEA - THE GEORGIAN IDEA
The Republic of Georgia occupies the center and the west of the Transcaucasus. The area of Georgia totals 69,5 thousand sq.km with a population of 5 million inhabitants (71% - Georgians).
The Georgians are one of the most ancient peoples of the world. At the end of the 2nd - begining of the 1st millennium B.C. in the south-eastern region of historical Georgia two major tribal unions arose; that of the Diaokhi (Tao) and the Kolkha, both continuing to the 8th cent. B.C.
In the 6th - 4th cent. B.C. the Georgian Kingdoms of Iberia (Kartli) and Egrisi (Kolkha) played a very significant role in the economic, cultural and political life of the ancient world. In the 4th cent. B.C. the Kingdom of Egrisi came under the influence of the Kingdom of Iberia (Kartli). This contributed for formation of a single Georgian state. According to "Kartlis Tskovreba" ("History of Georgia"), King Parnavaz I created the Georgian script (the 4th cent. B.C.).
In 325 Christianity was proclaimed the state religion of Georgia. In the 5th century the Patriarchate of Antiokh granted self-governance (Autocephaly) to the Georgian Orthodox Church.
In the 6th century the Georgian feudal family of Bagrationi appeared in the political area from Speri (Ispiri), the historical province of Georgia. The dynasty of Bagrationi reigned in Georgia from the 9th century till 1801.
