By reason of difficult relief, Georgia's climate zones are very different: from continental to subtropical. There are the palms, eucalyptuses, liana-entwined jungle of Colchis , the snowy mountain peaks; pine- and beech-clad slopes of the Greater and Lesser Caucasus ranges; the steppes of the Yori Plateau covered with beard grass; the orchads of Kartli and the world-famous vineyards of Kakheti , the fat herland of many Georgian vines . USA’s next target is the republic of Georgia
Everybody was thinking that USA’s next target of the anti-terrorist operation would be Somalia, Philippines, or Iraq, but it seems like it will be the republic of Georgia.
Philip Remler, American interim ambassador to Georgia stated last week that there were a lot of Al-Qaeda and Taliban gunmen dispersed all over the Caucasus. The Guardian newspaper wrote that the Pankissky gorge was the area that belonged to the republic of Georgia, but its government did not have the power over there, so the gorge was a way for the Chechen terrorists and foreign extremists to penetrate in Chechnya.
Remler also said that dozens of the gunmen from Al-Qaeda movement had left the territory of Afghanistan and was currently hiding in the mountains of the Caucasus. Remler said he had the information, which said that some of the guerrillas were hiding in the Pankissky gorge and were in contact with the Arab terrorist Khattab, who in his turn communicated with Osama bin Laden. “The Pankissky gorge is an extremely dangerous place for Geogria,” – said Remler.
Russia released a very harsh statement, being inspired with Washington’s support. The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Igor Ivanov, declared that Osama bin Laden was probably hiding in the Pankissky gorge. Why not?

HUMAN RIGHTS AND DEMOCRATIZATION IN THE REPUBLIC OF GEORGIA
    TUESDAY, MARCH 28, 1995
    A Hearing before the
    Commission on Security and Cooperation
    in Europe, Washington, DC.
The Commission met, pursuant to notice, at 2:10 p.m., in room 106, Dirksen Senate Office Building, Washington, DC., Hon. Christopher Smith, Chairman, presiding.
    COMMISSIONERS PRESENT
Hon. Christopher Smith, Chairman; Hon. Alfonse D'Amato, Co-chairman; and Hon. Frank R. Wolf, Commissioner. Witnesses: Hon. Tedo Japaridze, Dr. Eduard Gudava, Ms. Erika Dailey, and Dr. Stephen F. Jones.
    OPENING STATEMENT OF CHAIRMAN SMITH
Chairman Smith. I want to thank all of you for coming to this hearing, which to my knowledge is the first hearing in the history of the U.S. Congress focused exclusively on Georgia. This is the latest in a series of Helsinki Commission hearings that examine the state of democratization and human rights in individual countries and regions of the former Soviet Union. In the late 1980's, Georgians began to organize politically to undo communism and to gain independence. They lived through a very exciting period, although a key element in the chronicle of the liberation movement was tragic, the April 1989 killings of peaceful protesters in Tbilisi by Soviet forces. Since then, however, Georgia has endured very difficult times. It has been one of the most strife-torn New Independent States, a victim of internal political and ethnic divisiveness, and external provocation and aggression.

Fidelio has received the following items from readers in the Republic of Georgia. Dr. Nodar Natadze, who is Chairman of the People's Front of Georgia, comments on Schiller Institute founder Helga Zepp LaRouche's article in our Summer-Fall 2000 issue, "Only a New Classical Period Can Save Humanity from a Dark Age" (Vol. IX, No. 2-3). And, two members of the faculty of Tbilisi State University, Dr. Nino Silagadze and Prof. Dr. Tedo Dundua, offer an insightful political interpretation of a unique feature of Georgia's early church architecture. Dr. Natadze's letter was translated from the Russian by Rachel Douglas, and the original English of the Silagadze-Dundua paper has been edited.

http://www.great-adventures.com/destinations/rep_georgia/colchis.html
COLCHIS, THE LAND OF THE GOLDEN FLEECE, REPUBLIC OF GEORGIA Ancient Greek legends told of a fabulously wealthy land where Jason and the Argonauts stole the Golden Fleece from King Aeetes with the help of his daughter Medea. It was a distant land that was reached by the Black Sea and down the River Phasis. The actual site of this legendary kingdom has never been found but the Greeks must have been greatly impressed by the Colchis region of Georgia, through which the River Phasis (currently the Rioni River) runs, for such stories to have been born. Geographically, ancient Colchis comprised the land bounded by the Black Sea to the west, the Caucasus Mountains to the north, the Surami Range to the east and the Meskhetian Mountains to the south. In this fertile, sheltered area, Colchian civilization flourished. Their Late Bronze Age (15th to 8th Century BC) saw the development of an expertise in the smelting and casting of metals that began long before this skill was mastered in Europe. Sophisticated farming implements were made and fertile, well-watered lowlands blessed with a mild climate promoted the growth of progressive agricultural techniques. It is likely that the Golden Fleece existed. Earlier in this century, remote mountain villagers in Svaneti (a part of ancient Colchis) were observed using sheepskins to trap the fine gold particles in the rivers that flowed from the Caucasus Mountains. The skins would then be dried and beaten to shake out their contents. However, it is debatable as to whether or not the legendary 'wealth' of Colchis referred only to gold. Archaeological evidence dates the earliest Greek imports of painted pottery and amphorae to the end of the 7th Century BC. In exchange, it is thought that Greeks sought the rich natural resources of Colchis including wood and metal ores as well as textiles. Even today, the mountain slopes remain heavily forested and the Ancient Greek writer, Herodotus, referred to the superior quality of Colchian linen.

Georgia Described variously as part of Europe, Central Asia or the Middle East, Georgia has long been a flash point for cultural and geographical collision. Its weather and landscape are a meeting of east and west. Its history is a lengthy list of empires rising and falling, of invasions, skirmishes, massacres and wars. But it is also a nation of survival, and of great natural, cultural and gastronomic beauty. Georgia is holding its arms open to the world. And as civil unrest calms, the world is beginning to notice. Georgia is a newly independent nation, and while living conditions are improving, they're not yet at the western standards desired by the government. Tourist facilities outside of the capital, Tbilisi, are not highly developed and many of the goods and services taken for granted in other countries are not yet available. Despite this, and despite an area in the north of the country being basically off-limits due to separatist control, terrorist activity and an abundance of land mines, Georgia presents a proud face to the world. Its culture is ancient and built around a vast variety of influences; its people are a mix of traditional and very modern; and the food! Oh, my, the food!
Warning
Because of the presence of land mines and high incidence of kidnapping, visitors are advised to avoid travelling near the Russian border region, especially Chechnya, Dagestan, North Ossetia, Ingushetia, Kabarda-Balkar and Karachay-Cherkessia. The breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia should also be avoided.

Culture
Georgia is at the junction of Europe and Asia, and this has led to a diverse, moderate culture developing over thousands of years. According to ancient tradition, when God was handing out land to the peoples of the planet, the Georgians were too busy eating and drinking and arrived late. God told them that there was no land left, and the Georgians told him that they had been toasting his health. They invited God to join them, and he had such a wonderful time at the Georgians' table that he gave them all the land he had been saving for himself. Truly God's own country. Food in Georgia is one of the biggest attractions for visitors, and is the centrepiece of domestic cultural activity. Part of this family focus, and an unusual phenomenon for foreign visitors, is Georgian meal-time. Complicated ritual relationships are manifested in it. The table is led by tamada , who proposes traditional toasts throughout the meal. To the outsider, it can seem as though nothing is done before everyone drinks to it. It's best not to toast while drinking beer; it's regarded as a subtle insult. During Soviet rule, Georgian restaurants spread through the republic, and are still favourite haunts for discerning foodies throughout Russia and its former states. Each part of Georgia has its unique cuisine with flavours derived from spice combinations, but as a rule, a focus on herbs and garlic predominates. The only difficulty you will experience buying food will be because the locals are so keen to give it away! Cafes and restaurants mostly serve Georgian and more traditional European food, while fast food restaurants offer local dishes such as khinkali, kabab, barbecue and khachapuri. American-style fast food restaurants serve the usual collection of hot-dogs and hamburgers. For a breakfast with a difference, try the
