    News Releases

    P.C.T. HOME
History of the Animals in the Classroom Workshop, Manual and Teacher's Pet Certificate Program
updated April 27, 2000 The 2000 Animals in the Classroom Teacher Workshop-Teacher's Pet Certificate Program was expanded to accommodate several requests for participation. Workshops conducted between January and April, 2000 included: Collaboration with the North Kitsap S.D, at Poulsbo, WA; Collaboration with Olympia SD, Olympia WA; Collaboration with four regional SD in Tampa, FL at the PIDA, Pets 2000; at WWPSA's America's Family Pet Show, Pomona, CA; in collaboration with Post Falls, ID SD, and; in collaboration with the Woodland Park Zoo, Education Department, Seattle, WA. Since July 1998, a total of 437 teachers have enrolled in the workshop program. Many of these teachers have submitted a workshop survey to grade the program, and make comments and suggestions. The workshop content and presentation grading typically receives an average score of between 9.3-9.6 in a maximum of 10 points. Teachers seem pleased with what they are learning, and comment that they are anxious to make changes in habitat and husbandry, and to apply new lesson plans for science, geography, behavior and animal management by students within the classroom. Several pet retailers have contacted the Pet Care Trust about the possibility of supporting a teacher workshop in their area. Two date four Pet Retails have provided animals and equipment for discussion and display at workshops outside of the pet show venues. Currently the limiting factor for expanding the program is inadequate time and funding to expand with more workshops throughout the nation. Retailers with ideas about workshop sites and support for teacher certificates are encouraged to contact Dr. John Pitts at 360-765-3311; fax 360-765-3399; email

    1. Cage temperature 2. Proper lighting. Sunshine is ideal and your reptile can be placed out doors when the air temperature is above 80 if you have a secure enclosure, and a shady area with water is provided. Second best is a full spectrum reptile light. (Not just a black light.) Putting them near a window is not enough, some wavelengths are still filtered out. UVB light is necessary for vitamin D production which in turn aids in calcium absorption from the gut. Use the reptile light 12-14 hours a day. Use the basking light at least 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the evening. 3. Proper nutrition.

FACILITY TO PROMOTE HEALTH AND SAFETY PETS CARE AND SAFETY
    PETS
Many child care providers who care for children in their own homes have pets. Pets can be excellent companions for children. Pets can meet emotional needs of children and others for love and affection. Caring for pets also gives children an opportunity to learn how to treat and be responsible for others. However, some guidelines for protecting the health and safety of the children should be followed.
    • All pets, whether kept indoors or outside, should be in good health, show no evidence of disease, and be friendly toward children. Dogs or cats should be appropriately immunized (check with the veterinarian) and be kept on flea, tick, and worm control programs. Proof of immunizations should be kept in a safe place. Pet living quarters should be kept clean. All pet waste should be disposed of immediately. Litter boxes should not be accessible to children.

    Frequently Asked Questions
    Q. Is it safe to have a pet snake around children? A. It is safe to keep a pet snake around children as long as adult supervision is available. This, of course , would exclude poisonous or the larger species. The common ball python or indigenous garter snake are basically harmless and can provide a learni ng experience. Q. Is it true that snakes only eat live animals? A. Yes, most snakes feed on live animals in their natural habitat and so prefer the same in captivity. Snakes, being carnivorous, require the protein and other nutrients that rodents and the like provide. Q. How often should I feed my snake?
