Owning a Ferret Ferrets can be a lot of fun, and under the right circumstances they can make wonderful pet. They are not the same as caring for a dog or a cat, and before getting one of these playful critters you should try to learn as much about them as possible. They are not, however, usually recommended in household with very small children. General Information Ferrets come in several different color schemes: the Fitch ferret is the most popular. Fitch ferrets have a buff colored coat with black markings on the face, feet, and tails. Albino ferrets are white with pink eyes. Some ferrets have a buff coat with light markings. The female ferret is called a jill, the male is a hob, and the infants are called kits.

Exotic Pets Vet ExoticPetsVet.com Menu Informational Site Only. Call NVC for an appointment with "Dr.Jack" When Is The Time To Say Goodbye? We have all had, currently have or will have pets in the future. An unfortunate fact of life is that (except for a few species of reptiles and birds) our family pets do not have the life span of a human. This leads to the inevitable time that we must deal with their passing. In many instances animals will pass away on their own, but in other cases we are in an uncomfortable position of having to make a decision due to their pain and suffering or poor quality of life. First and foremost you are the best judge of your pets quality of life on a daily basis. How's their activity level, appetite, do they respond well to you or is there little response and interaction with the family and other pets anymore? Is the pet in pain, or do they have any current diseases causing discomfort or disability? These questions can be determined best by the pet's owner. Veterinary advise can often be very helpful to give additional information on your pets physical condition and sometimes mental status. An animal behaviorist (not the same as a trainer) can also give an excellent appraisal of both quality of life and mental status as well.

Pet care for iguanas
One might think that the fascination with reptiles begins with dinosaurs. Dinosaurs were the reptiles that once ruled the earth. Bringing home a reptile as a pet is sort of a consolation prize to have never lived in the time of the dinosaur. Reptiles remind us that there are creatures in this world that existed without human presence. bodyOffer(31759) You should choose an iguana with clear, bright eyes and a healthy physique. The plump physique indicates that the animal is well fed and is also well hydrated. The skin should be a vivid shade of green and free of bumps and discoloration. The animal should be docile and appear interested in its surroundings. The iguana should not appear stressed. It is usually impossible to tell the difference between a male and female iguana until about eighteen months of age. Even then only a herpetologist can probably tell the difference. There are some behaviors as the iguana grows that serve as guidelines for sex determination. A head-bobbing motion in general is said to be a male behavior but in some instances has been observed in females as well. There are some basic facts that you should know about iguanas before you buy. The first thing is that iguanas need heat and light to survive. Reptiles are cold-blooded animals and heat is essential to their well being. The temperature should be between 78-85 degrees Fahrenheit. Heat is vital to the enzymes in the body, without these enzymes many chemical reactions in the reptile would not occur. If the reptile is too cold they may hibernate, stop digesting their food, or stop eating altogether.

Reptiles More and more people are acquiring exotics animals as pets. It is important to realize that these pets are not necessarily less expensive to maintain, nor do they always require less time and effort than dogs and cats. As with any animal, what they eat, how they interact with their environment, their socialization, and exposure to infectious diseases all play an important role in their overall health. Care of Pet Reptiles
This is a general guide to help you get a broad idea of how to keep reptiles. Specific research on your part is still necessary for the specific animal you are interested in. Please feel free to contact the society. We have many people who are "experts" in certain reptiles and are glad to help out. Buying a Herp 1st Vet visit Housing Grooming ... Behaviour
Buying a Herp
When you want to purchase a new reptile or amphibian the first thing you should do is learn as much as you can about it. You do not want to still be trying to find out how warm your new little pet should be after you have bought him, while in the meantime the poor little creature is ill or dyeing from improper temperatures. Secondly you should have the cage system up and running for a few days before the little guy goes in. Then you will know for sure that it isn't too hot or too cold. Most reputable sources of pet herps will let you put them on hold while you get your set up ready. Ideally you want to purchase your new pet from a good source which is caring for its reptiles well (if you have done your homework you will know if the care the reptile is recieving is adequate). The creature should be healthy (fat tail base, no bones protruding, bright and alert attitude, no traces of dried feces on the skin, no obvious signs of illness or injury). It should also ideally be captive bred. The first reason for this is that a wild caught animal is more likely to be ill, have parasites or die. The second reason is that by encouraging captive breeding and only keeping those animals in captivity, herpetoculturists will not be depleting wild populations with their hobby.
