C.A.T.R.A. is the Canadian Association of Tire Recycling Agencies. It is representatives of the Board of Directors of the scrap tire recycling programs in Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta.
Government program representatives from Ontario and British Columbia as well as representatives from the 4 provinces met in Calgary on October 20, 1999. The original purpose of the meeting was to build on the informal "association" that is functioning at the management level amongst the four Western provincial tire recycling programs in the provinces. At the same time, a similar association has been established by the four Eastern provincial tire-recycling programs as well as Newfoundland and Ontario that do not have programs. The two Associations have established valuable ongoing communications between them.

29. NRDC: Recycling
Reports, fact sheets and guides to recycling from the Natural Resources Defense Council.
http://www.nrdc.org/cities/recycling/default.asp
Recycling saves trees. This is one of the first environmental lessons children learn, but it's only part of the story. Recycling also protects habitat, reduces the need for landfills, and curbs pollution. NRDC promotes increased recycling, with a special focus on New York City, where we work to improve and monitor the city's curbside pickup program. We also seek to expand the national market for recycled materials. NRDC was instrumental in persuading the federal government to demand paper with at least 30 percent postconsumer recycled content from its suppliers, a step that dramatically increased demand for recycled paper. Today we are pressing New York and other cities to follow suit, to spur even more demand and create new incentives for recycled products.
…On reducing waste and other issues with our email bulletins
New Publication Expresses Vision For Transforming the Paper Industry

A coalition of environmental organizations has issued a call urging the paper industry to abandon outdated and destructive environmental practices and adopt environmentally responsible alternatives for the 21st century.
Top Ten Reasons to Recycle

If you don't already recycle and buy products made from recycled materials, here are ten good reasons to start.

30. Container Recycling Institute (CRI)

http://www.container-recycling.org/
CRI is a non-profit organization that studies and promotes policies and practices that shift the social and environmental costs associated with manufacturing, recycling, and disposal of container and packaging waste from government and taxpayers to producers and consumers. CRI plays a vital role in educating policy makers, government officials and the general public regarding the social and environmental impacts of the production and disposal of no-deposit, no-return beverage containers and the need for producers to take responsibility for their wasteful packaging.

Not only do we service junkyards, but we also deal with state, federal, and local agencies to remove unmanaged tire piles. We buy catalytic converters, aluminum rims, and bulk scrap metal. We can also provide continuous scrap tire removal on an annual, monthly, or weekly basis. To receive an estimate, please contact us at your earliest convenience.
Finding Solutions For Complex Waste Disposal Problems. Nuisance tire piles pose severe health threats that endanger the public and the environment in 3 distinct ways. First, they are perfect for tiger mosquitoes and other insects to lay their larvae. Mosquitoes need water to do this and a tremendous amount of water collects in these tires. The problem worsens if the tires are near wetlands or rivers. Preventative maintenance of the tire piles save taxpayer dollars because counites don't have to spend quite as much to reduce mosquitoe infestations. Also, reduces the toxic effect of deadly insecticides used to control mosquitoes.

Chuck digs into a worm box
(he forgot to smile, but is friendly) We currently have 4 worm boxes, so most of our vegetable waste goes to feeding the worms or directly into our compost piles. When the worms are done with it, this newly created soil is sifted out, and left to age a while. Then we take it to our greenhouse and mix it with garden soil, and a variety of other ingredients to make both potting soil and to augment Songaia's organic gardens

Wood Recyclers Association formed

Nine companies have joined the WRA so far, and it is extending the invitation to other members of the trade.
Both the British Secondary Metals Association and the British Metals Federation are holding meetings this month on the proposed merger between the two metals recycling trade associations, scheduled for 1st July.
David Hulse, newly appointed head of the BMF, will probably be offered the post of Director General of the new trade association, with BSMA director Duncan Wemyss expected to be offered the post of Deputy Director General.
On the sticky issue of subscriptions, which caused the most recent merger proposals to collapse last year, members would not see any change in the level of subscriptions until 2003. It also looks likely that there will be equal numbers of BSMA and BMF members on the new Executive Committee.
To decide the issue, the BMF is holding an Extraordinary General Meeting on the merger on 26th April, with the BSMA holding an open evening on the issue on the evening of 9th April at the Burlington Hotel, Birmingham, with a postal vote likely to take place towards the end of the month.
