Introduction
Modern graphics computers are powerful tools assisting the scientist in understanding complex three-dimensional (3-D) scenarios such as the atomic structure of a protein molecule, or a pelvis fracture as obtained by computer tomography (CT). Nowadays, graphics computers achieve such a high processing speed that it has become routine to manipulate even the most complex 3-D objects interactively, and to animate their dynamic properties in real-time.

Principle
Molecular modeling [Lipkowitz, 1990] is a general term involving interactive computer graphics and computational methods to construct, manipulate and analyze the structure and function of molecules. Recent advances in the development of graphics workstations have provided the scientist with virtual reality, i.e., highly complex molecular structures can be visualized and animated in real-time, providing accurate stereo impression employing state-of-the-art display technology [Akeley, 1993].
Standard molecular modeling applications include a variety of tasks, ranging from rational design of novel organic compounds to understanding the assembly of biological macromolecules. Inherent to the visualization of these problems is the representation of a 3-D molecular system. At high resolution, as obtained by X-ray crystallography, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), or theoretical simulations, this task requires a structural description of the molecule in terms of its atomic coordinates. Atoms are often displayed as solid-renderd spheres, whereas covalent bonds are shown as sticks joining two atoms. Other properties of the molecule, e.g., its hydrophobic or electrostatic potential, which govern most of the intra- and intermolecular interactions, can best be displayed on a solvent-accessible surface generated from its atomic coordinates.

INTRODUCTION 3-Dimensional (3-D) structural information is the key to understanding the function of biomolecules , their molecular interactions and supramolecular assemblies . Over the past decade, a variety of experimental and theoretical methods have been developed to provide 3-D structural insight at various resolutions, such as obtained by X-ray crystallography nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), electron microscopy (EM), atomic force miscroscopy (AFM), and medical imaging such as computer tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Modern graphics computers are powerful tools to visualize these 3-D data sets , so it has become routine to manipulate even the most complex 3-D objects interactively , and to animate their dynamic properties in real-time [c.f. Henn et al., 1996 Structure determination requires experimental data to be gathered by different data acquisition methods and under a variety of preparation conditions, because a given method either provides only partial insight or is subject to preparative experimental artifacts due to the size and complexity of the molecular system under investigation. We propose the method for the three-dimensional computer graphics (3DCG) animation system based on a concurrent object model. In this method, each character and object appearing in the animation story is modeled as a concurrent object and they act their own roles by discreate event simulation based on exchanging messages. By implementing thread-based system in the object inside, this system can execute the simulation and outputting the virtual world as real time 3DCG in parallel. In this paper, we will describe this method and show prototype of real-time 3DCG animation system applied our method experimentally.

CS 445/645 - Intro Graphics

This course introduces techniques for 2D and 3D computer graphics, including modeling and representation, illumination and shading, rendering, texturing, and advanced software tools. The student will learn fundamental algorithms and techniques and gain the knowledge necessary to understand and augment the latest innovations in computer graphics.
CS 447/647 - Image Synthesis
This course provides a broad overview of the theory and practice of rendering. We will discuss classic rendering algorithms, however most of the course will focus on either fundamentals of image synthesis or current methods for physically based rendering. CS 851-2 - Interactive Ray Tracing In this seminar we will explore the literature of this very young branch of computer graphics. We will discuss the "how" of interactive ray tracing: the developments in hardware and algorithms that have made this possible. We will also address the more important question of "why": what, if anything, does interactive ray tracing offer over the extremely sophisticated and powerful polygonal rendering hardware that has been developed over the past twenty years? What novel rendering strategies does real-time ray tracing enable over what was previously possible? Can ray tracing usefully augment production real-time rendering systems such as games? Fall 2002

Computer Graphics, therefore, plays a critical role at the interface between human and computer. MERL has a strong history in the field of computer graphics research, with participation in respected industry conferences and with diverse research projects, running the gamut from scientific visualization to interactive manipulation of geometric shapes. At MERL, our key focus areas in computer graphics include: - Modeling. We are developing new methods of representing computer graphics that offer advantages for compression, transmission, editing, rendering, and animation of graphics models with increasingly complex shapes. Research includes the use of point samples and adaptively sampled distance fields as primitives for 3D graphics. - Image-Based Rendering (IBR). IBR refers loosely to techniques that generate new images from other images rather than from a geometric description. It combines techniques of computer graphics and computer vision. IBR enables interactive photo-realistic rendering, because the source data are photos. We are working on the creation of static and dynamic 3D photographs and immersive 3D environments, enabling new applications in e-commerce, entertainment, and tele-collaboration. - Computer Graphics and Machine Learning. At MERL, we are applying principles of AI and machine learning to complex computer graphics problems, such as lip synchronization for speech, computer generated animation, and high-resolution image processing.
