EMAIL this page to a friend Availability: Available When: Anytime Where: Online at HeinemannU.com This course is designed to help your students read better and improve your ability to use what you already know about teaching reading. The central premise is a simple one: how can we (remember and better) use what we already know to help our students read an array of texts? Thus part of this course will help you identify what you already know and give you some ideas about how to put that knowledge to better use. This same evaluation should allow you to discover what you don't know or have not yet mastered, and provide opportunities to learn how you can integrate those tools and techniques into classes you teach. Course Goals:
  • Identify and extend what you already know and are able to do in teaching reading.

Assistive Technology - Tools for Immediate Reading/Typing Improvement
A number of devices now exist for enabling anybody to read who needs assistive technology . Some of these tools hold books for the reader so pressure is taken off the neck, shoulder, back and arms. No hand-holding of books is required. These tools are designed for reading flat on your back in bed, sitting in a regular chair, sitting in a wheelchair, riding on an exercise bike, standing, or reading/typing at a computer. Any size wheelchair can be custom fitted with one of our book holders. Another tool, called the Back Buddy, is specifically designed to provide self massage for pain caused while reading. In addition to a number of mechanical tools, Proportional Reading also offers a computer tool for reading in which there is no book to hold and no eye movement is required to read. This software program enables individuals with special needs to immediately start to read any text. Any text can be instantly read out loud in real human voice fluently as it is displayed on the screen one word at a time or one sentence at a time. In addition, any text can be read silently without eye movement at any of 14 speeds up to 700 wpm. As you read silently you feel like someone is reading out loud to you, even though there is no actual voice. Also, create notes, five level outlines and two sided flash cards without any retyping of text. Review text easily and quickly. Increase enjoyment, self-esteem and grades. Skills are transferrable.

    • Research title: The Exploration and Development of Tools for Active Reading and Electronic Texts
    • The project is to prepare an electronic edition of a Renaissance play which promotes an awareness of the editorial process through the use of dynamic interactive enhancements. The edition, and the experience gained from generating it, will determine a model for future electronic editions.
    • The editing process, and the levels of importance placed on textual variants between editions of a published work

:about the project Active Reading Renaissance texts, including many Shakespeare plays, survive in different versions and in different physical formats. In many cases there are variant versions, with each separate version liable to contain errors, ambiguities, and textual peculiarities. The original quarto versions may also contain elaborate typography, which could also serve as a definite guide to meaning, consistently displaying idiosyncrasies of spelling and punctuation.

Tools This JAVA applet was written by Keith Adlam, Jeremy Giles and John Talbot of the British Geological Survey and used with kind permission. I'm sorry, you do not appear to have Java enabled. If you need a latitude and longitude of your observing location for your favourite astronomical software, then this applet is your answer. By entering a 6 figure easting and northing taken from any Ordnance Survey map, you will be given a latitude and longitude to the nearest second (about 100m). For example, if you've got Landranger Map 175 handy check out this example. St. Peter's Church Hall can be found at grid reference 474500, 172100. Look it up for yourself, you need all six digits including the first one which can be found in the corners of the map as the small superscript numbers. On map 175 the SW corner is labelled and . Try The Church Hall in the applet and you should get Latitude = 51°26'33"N and Longitude = 0°55'41"W.

"I can read it, but I don't get it - I just don't understand what the author is trying to say." Does this sound like you? Well, it's your lucky day. These seven reading comprehension tools help readers that can read (decode), but need help understanding (comprehending).
    Tool #1: Making Connections:
To make a connection use your prior knowledge (called schema) to preview the reading material, predict what might happen, and find purpose in the reading. Our three classifications of connections are:
    -text to self
    -text to text
-text to world Tool #2: Questioning:
When you use questioning you set a purpose and clarify your understanding of the reading. Keep in mind that "thin questions" are easy to find in the reading, while "thick questions" are deeper and are contained in the clues. Tool #3: Visualizing:
When you visualize you create mental images of your reading. As you create these images your reading becomes a "movie in your head." Tool #4: Inferring:
Inferring is reading "between the lines." By using clues and making predictions you can often discover what the author is really saying in your reading, or your may even figure out what will happen next. You can confirm, revise, or reject your predictions as you gain more information.

They analyze, compare, evaluate and interpret multiple representations from a variety of disciplines and subjects, including texts, photographs, artwork, and data. Riley Unveils New Tools To Improve Student Reading U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley today released two new tools for raising student reading achievement. Addressing a national conference of more than 150 reading organizations, Riley called on parents, grandparents, schools and communities, including reading and child care experts, to redouble their efforts, especially in the nation's poorest communities, to bring about a significant breakthrough in reading. "Even though our nation's reading scores are finally going up, we still have millions of young people who are struggling to master the basics," Riley said. "Parents, grandparents, teachers and communities all have a role to play in making sure all children learn to read well. We must work together to give children the individual attention and support they need to master reading early so that they can then succeed in school and beyond." The first report Riley released

Awaiting FDA’s pending bar coding rule for unit-dose pharmaceuticals, printers and software providers have been gearing up this year to offer two-dimensional code solutions. Verifying those codes after printing and reading them in the field, however, has worried some potential users. Since typical bar code readers employ linear scanners, some users questioned the ease and affordability of switching to two-dimensional code reading.
If these users had attended the Vision Show West’s (Santa Clara, CA) recent session on pharmaceutical and medical device applications, they would have heard some good news. During the session, which was moderated by Daphne Allen, editor of PMP News , attendees learned that two-dimensional reading can be accomplished in-line at typical line speeds, and it may also be handled by systems that read one-dimensional codes as well.
