Improving your reading techniques
Another thing to consider in effective use of time is the time that you devote to reading documents. Improving your reading skills can significantly reduce the time you take to assimilate a document. There are two main strategies to achieving this: speed reading , where you learn to read quicker and more smoothly; and use of effective reading strategies , where you learn how to extract the information that you require from documents in the most efficient way possible. Tools for reading these files
Introduction
Files on the Internet are stored in a variety of formats. Most of the files here are in ASCII, HTML or PostScript/PDF. If you have a choice PDF files are the best format. You can download a free viewer from Adobe Systems that works very well on most systems; see the instructions below for details. If the files are not available in PDF format, you can try to install a PostScript viewer on your system; instructions are given below. Often files are compressed. Most of the files on this system are compressed using the Unix compress utility or GNU's gzip utility. Read below for instructions on how to decompress these files.
PDF files
We are trying to standardize on storing documents as PDF files; please bear with us as we undertake the conversion. PDF (Portable Document Forman) viewers for a number of different platforms are available from Adobe Systems Incorporated ; look under the heading Adobe Acrobat

: Individuals with learning disabilities may have difficulty with understanding what they read. This difficulty stems from an inability to decode and/or comprehend written information due to an information-processing deficit. This deficit may be visual and/or auditory. Some of the most effective devices for individuals with reading disabilities take a multisensory approach. This approach uses other sensory modes, such as hearing and sight, to assist individuals who have visual and/or auditory processing deficits. Individuals with learning disabilities may have difficulty processing visual information, perceiving words incorrectly. They may often look up while reading and lose their place. They may also have difficulty recognizing their own written mistakes. Assistive technologies can make visual tasks less complicated and less strenuous. Many of the assistive devices were originally developed for individuals with visual impairments, but these tools have been found to be very effective for people with reading disabilities. There are reading aids which will do the following:

Sponsored by LD Association of Georgia LD Adults of Georgia Contact Us Case Study - Reading Name: Mark Age: 28 Diagnosis: Learning disabilities, primarily affecting reading skills.
Mark is the third child from a large African-American family. He was born and raised in a large western city. He attended inner-city schools and was placed in special education classes in the fourth grade. He is unsure why he was in those classes other than the fact that he just had trouble in school. By the time he reached high school, he was only in one special class per day. The school placed him in a vocational track against his wishes; Mark’s dream since he was a child has been to obtain a college degree. Mark has little contact with his family, revealing that they were never supportive of his dream to get a college education. He says he has always known that college was the only way to create a better life for himself. He does not plan to marry or start a family until he gets his degree. He worked his way across the country attending small colleges until he met a roadblock of courses he could not complete. He then dropped out and worked several jobs to pay back the student loans he had received and to search for another college to which he might transfer.

  • Adjusting the position of books and reading materials to suit an individual student can make the content much more visible or accessible. Being able to turn pages, without having to call for help, frees a student to read at his or her own pace. Highlighting not only makes important information stand out, but helps students find information easier and faster. Portable alternatives to heavy dictionaries and other reference materials allow students to more easily find answers to questions and pursue their interests.

How can educators and students take fuller advantage of the processing possibilities offered by full-text databases. What do you do for example with a single e-text such as a play by Shakespeare, let alone the collection of commentaries on the Divine Comedy offered by the Dartmouth Dante Database? What kinds of tools can users apply? What kind of skills do they need to apply them well? TACTWEB http://tactweb.mcmaster.ca/ offers an interesting case. Such text analysis software enhances a user's willingness to conduct re-iterative and successive searches on the same body of material. In a computer-mediated communication environment, sustained interest in a given body of material can be further encouraged by exploiting the possibility of sharing results with other users. Social interactions can be harnessed to motivate student learning. The educator can foster unique but structurally similar activities and events. The educator can help learners elicit the questions necessary for successful re-reading. The educator can also can model meta-cognitive behaviour and demonstrate how to ask questions about the results of a search in order to continue exploring. Indeed such modeling becomes internalized by the learning self and demonstratable to others.
