Using Electronic Tools for Reading Students with difficulties reading print may benefit from using electronic reading tools. With these tools digitized text can be read aloud to students, allowing them to focus on the content of the text rather than on decoding the text. Electronic tools are most effective when integrated into the curriculum using principals of Universal Design for Learning What is Universal Design for Learning? Universal Design for Learning means setting up the infrastructure of the curriculum and the educational environment in such a way as to provide alternatives that make the curriculum accessible and appropriate for all students. To illustrate the concept using an architectural example, the curb cut, originally designed to benefit those who use wheelchairs, also eases travel for those who are pushing strollers, using skateboards or bicycles, or walking with canes. See Universal Design for Learning for more information. What is a screen reader? Two categories of reading tools are Screen Readers and Text Readers. A screen reader is software that reads the entire screen to the user, including menus, graphics, buttons and pop-up dialog boxes. Screen readers are useful for people who are blind or have very low vision. It is not within the scope of this document to cover screen readers. This document will focus on the use of text readers. Top 50 Security Tools
Update (March 22, 2002) : Fixed a bunch of broken links. Thanks to Kurt Seifried for his help. I also plan to hold a new tool survey within the next couple months. In May/June of 2000, we conducted a survey of 1200 Nmap users from the nmap-hackers mailing list to determine their favorite security tools. Each respondant could list up to 5. I was so impressed by the list they created that I am putting the top 50 up here where everyone can benefit from them. I think anyone in the security field would be well advised to go over the list and investigate any tools they are unfamiliar with. I also plan to point newbies to this page whenever they write me saying "I do not know where to start". Respondants were allowed to list open source or commercial tools on any platform. Commercial tools are noted as such in the list below. I may change this list occasionally as new tools are created and others fade into obscurity due to security enhancements becomming mainstream. Or maybe I'll just have another survey next year. Also note that many of the descriptions in this list were taken from the Debian package descriptions, the

Speed Reading
What is speed reading?
Speed Reading is a method of improving a reader's reading ability, improving both the speed at which a text can be assimilated, and the level of understanding of the material.
Why speed read?
Applying speed reading techniques gives the following benefits:
  • Large volumes of information can be assimilated rapidly
  • By reading faster and absorbing more information into short term memory, the meaning and structure of a document is easier to see.
  • Your eyes have to do less work, meaning that reading for long periods can be less tiring.
Background
Think about the way in which you are reading this text. Most people think that they read the way young children read - either letter-by-letter, or at best word-by-word. If you notice the way in which your eye muscles actually move when reading a printed text, you will probably find that you are fixing your eyes on one block of words, then moving your eyes to the next block of words, and so on: effectively you are reading not words, but blocks of words at a time. The period of time during which the eye rests on one word is called a 'fixation'. You may also notice that you don't always proceed from one block of words to the next: sometimes you may move back to a preceding block of words if you are unsure about something. These disruptions to the forward flow of reading are called 'skip-backs'.
