D. Specific Disability-Related Questions:
D1 What software is good for a child with autism?
"A computer is like a ramp for a child with autism" is a quote that was heard recently.
A study was done with children with autism interacting with "typical" peers and a computer in a classroom, resulting in increase in communication and socialization as well as a lot of fun! This can be read at: WWW
http://scott.mprojects.wiu.edu/~eccts/articles/autism1.html
Web sites are full of information about structured software designed to elicit language development, cognitive development, etc. from children with autism. Experience has shown that many children with autism like to use the computer because it is a safe, structured, predictable environment. Generally, any software can be used if a child shows interest. Programs that we view as "games" may in fact be tools for learning sequence, cause and effect, and manipulation of environment. Some web sites of organizations that focus on autism will list software titles that have been used successfully with children with autism. Many more structured titles and descriptions will be listed. Web Browsers
This site has been designed with Frames, which we have sought to use intelligently to make navigation around the site as simple as possible. We are aware that Frames are controversial from an HCI perspective, but believe that most IJHCS readers are by now 'Web/Frames literate', and that the advantages outweigh the small initial learning costs. Choose and download a browser
Printing Adobe Acrobat documents
The HTML version has been designed for online browsing, not printing. All articles are available in their final print form, supplied by Academic Press . These are in Adobe Acrobat's Portable Document Format (PDF), which requires the Acrobat Reader, freely available for MacOS, Windows and Unix. Choose and download a version
Commenting on articles
This environment uses the HyperNews system (developed by Daniel LaLiberte at NCSA) to enable readers to easily critique and discuss articles. Comment on the article in general, on specific sections, or on other readers' comments. Contributions can be named or anonymous, and can be tagged as "Agree" or "Disagree". Furthermore, you can add your own links to comments so that a range of 'secondary resources' relevant to the article is built up (URLs typed in will be automatically activated). You do not require any special tools to use HyperNews apart from a Web browser which recognises Forms.

BookWise 3.0 is supported on both Windows platforms. A scanner and sound card are necessary if the Reading Edge is not used with BookWise. See the "Notes" section at the end of this guide. Description: BookWise Edge is BookWise software running on a PC attached to the Reading Edge scanner which also serves as the synthesizer source. BookWise software alone can be installed on a PC which is attached to a regular scanner and a compatible sound card used as the speech synthesizer source. BookWise is a PC-based interactive system which scans books and other printed materials, converts the text to synthesized speech, highlights the text, and reads it aloud. Bookwise recognizes almost any printed text, including faxed, typewritten, laser-printed and photo-copied materials, and the program recognizes almost every type style from size 8 to 72 points.

Development of reading tools and programming for various TOU meters Investigators:: Kasam Siriratchuwong, Dr.Pichit Rerkshanandana, Dr.Djitt Laowattana, and Theera Yaemglin Recently, regional electricity demands are highly increasing and continuously expanding in every sector of the Kingdom of Thailand. As a result, regional consumers have different profiles in electrical demand. The Provincial Electricity Authority [PEA] has changed a method of charging rate from TOD (Time of Day) to TOU (Time of Use). Accordingly, the collecting processes: such as recording and adjusting factors of charging rate is indeed too difficult to get carried out. In addition, the new types of electric meters have been changed for solving this inefficiency and making it easy to process. Infrared recording meter is also used to reduce this burden. Electric rates are read by infrared recording heads, from electric meter to computer as shown in Figure 1. Amount of electric usage data is transmitted via serial communicating line and calculated for billing. At present, the different types of electric meters are one of the biggest problem. The specifications in each product are different and incompatible to each other. A recording operator needs to carry all types of infrared reading recorders to measure which is cumbersome. Insufficient equipment using in this work also leads to time delay and human error.
