Worksheet #7: School Career Relationship 2nd - 5th Grades PURPOSE This is the section where we try to spark the individual's INTEREST . We discuss the reasons for studying and help them establish personal short term goals (to pass a test) and long term goals (to become an engineer). We try to instill in the individuals our value of education. We try to relate it to immediate and specific goals rather than abstract goals. Here is the place where the story about walking 10 miles to school applies. It is at this point that discussion about famous individuals and their subsequent successes resulting from good studying and learning practices, is employed. At this point we also ACTIVATE or "charge up" the youngsters. Whatever it takes to get our students to learn - incentives, rewards, stickers, subliminal measures, hugs, affirmations. Educational research has always supported the concept that no matter what the program is, it's success is guaranteed if the individuals involved are enthusiastic.

GENERAL Biographical Dictionary - Printed dictionaries are useful only if you know a person's last name and want other information. But if you want to know who wrote The Grapes of Wrath or who discovered the greenhouse effect, or you want a list of cartoonists or past presidents of Somalia, a paper dictionary won't help, whereas this dictionary will give you those answers immediately. And it's up to date. Names can be entered as last name only, first name plus last name, or first initial plus last name. If you come up empty, try the Spelling Wizard which will try to find names in the dictionary with similar spellings. Your results produce birth and death years, occupation and major accomplishments. Biographies - This sitecontains data regarding historical persons related to American History. * marks sites with extensive biographies while # indicates a literary biography. Writing About Literature: A Guide to Research
    Preface
This guide discusses library resources and research techniques which will assist students in studying and writing about literature. It is especially designed to help undergraduates meet their composition requirements, but we hope it also will aid others doing literary research in Wilson Library. The sources covered include works useful for the study of literature in general and for the study of American and English literature in particular.
    Introduction: Reading About Literature
Before beginning research on any literary topic it is important to analyze exactly what it is you need to know
  • Do you need biographical information, critical studies, historical background, book reviews, definitions, quotations, or to locate a story or a poem in a collection?
If you need critical or biographical or historical information, should it be in the form of a) brief summaries (such as you might find in a literary encyclopedia or handbook); b) articles in books and periodicals; or, c) in book-length studies? And how important is it that the information be current?
