THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE FACULTY OF ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS
The beginnings of the present-day Faculty of Economics and Business can be traced back to 1959 when on 2 July the two-year post-secondary Commercial School was founded, offering a two-year programme of study. A foundation stone was laid for the future university in M aribor. The foundation of the School stemmed from the needs of industry, which lacked educated personnel. Educational programmes were thus practically oriented, closely linked with industry and commerce in its local area Graduates were immediately able to manage their businesses in various fields of industry. The need of industry to get educated personnel also necessitated the organisation of part-time education programmes. In the year of study 195 9/60 806 students enrolled, of which 685 as part-time students. In 1960 the School changed its name to School of Economics and Commerce (2-years of study). The first 17 professors soon found out that industry required more than basic practical knowledge. It also needed help in solving their managerial problems. The School started to produce elaborates, professional research reports and project assessments for industry. This is how research activities at our school started and were usually implemented within various educational processes.
