This module is an interactive tutorial which gives a comprehensive view of Probability and Statistics. This interactive module covers basic probability, random variables, moments, distributions, data analysis including regression, moving averages, exponential smoothing, and clustering. The Probability and Statistics refresher module is intended for use by DAU course participants. for assistance. The weblike arrangement of the tutorial enables the user to browse randomly from topic to topic. A knowledgeable user will be able to skip subtopics or proceed directly to an area of particular interest. CAUTION TO THE NOVICE USER: The weblike form of this tutorial tempts the user to follow each link offered and, thus, lose the thread of the subtopic originally begun. So it is advisable to limit random browsing from topic to topic when first using the tutorial. The subway lines are provided to help the user stay on the topic thread. In addition, note that the browser provides a way to backtrack through the pages seen using the "Back" button. The user is strongly encouraged to return to this page, the "Stat Home Page", from any point in the tutorial to leave a comment for the developers of the tutorial. (Click on "Comments" below.) The "house" button for quick return to this page is found on the subway map and on each individual page.

Tutorial Classes Weekly classes You will gain the most from the weekly classes if you prepare for them thoroughly:
  • Check your solutions to the homework sheets, and the practice test, against the solutions posted on the web. Marked work can be collected from the baskets on level 9 on Monday from 12.45pm. For the Monday classes (P1 and P2), marked work will be returned in the class. Start work promptly on the HW sheet (issued Thursday) for the following week. If you miss a sheet, get it down from the web straight away. You should aim, by the time of your class, to know exactly where you are having difficulty. You can then obtain individual guidance.

    Advanced Certificate in Statistics
The Advanced Certificate in Statistics is an undergraduate qualification designed to be equivalent to a first (BSc) degree in statistics. Candidates should have a tertiary qualification in a numerate discipline which includes a substantial course in mathematics. The course runs from September to June and consists of lectures and directed reading equivalent in total to about 240 hours (plus associated examples classes, tutorials and practical sessions). The courses are selected to suit individual needs, but typically consist of about 120 hours taken from the second year undergraduate specialist programme, together with some third year courses as appropriate. Courses in Pure Mathematics might be substituted for some of those listed above if these are needed by particular candidates. Successful completion of the Advanced Certificate and a high level pass in the examinations is a suitable qualification for entry to the MSc course Conversely, applicants for the MSc course who do not have the requisite advanced background in mathematics and statistics are encouraged to take the Advanced Certificate course as a preliminary year. The Advanced Certificate can then be regarded as the first year of a two year MSc programme, although entry to the second year is not automatic but is dependent on a good performance in the preliminary year. The Advanced Certificate is awarded on successful completion of the first year whether or not the candidate proceeds to the second year.
