The Pre-Raphaelites
The image of the Lady of Shalott sailing to her doom in the painting by John William Waterhouse powerfully captures the feeling of despair redolent in Tennyson’s poem, and has become something of a cultural icon to art lovers. Ophelia lying in the river, as painted by John Everett Millais is also a familiar figure. Mention the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, however, and many people are likely to give you puzzled looks. Waterhouse and Millais, in fact, were just two of this enterprising group of English artists who wanted to get away from the artificiality and stiffness of classical painting, and favoured literary subjects (particularly Tennyson and Shakespeare). Looking at their paintings, one of the most striking features which immediately becomes evident is the glowing colours. This effect was achieved by painting directly onto white canvas, instead of the usual, more acceptable brown. In Waterhouse and Millais’ time, the Pre-Raphaelites were a known ‘school’ of art, if not necessarily accepted by other artists. Beginning in 1848, and continuing only until approximately 1853, the original group consisted of John Everett Millais, William Holman Hunt, and Dante Gabriel Rosetti. Others, including Waterhouse, joined the group later. All set themselves against what they saw as the stiff and dry academism of art after Raphael - hence, their desire to be ‘Pre-Raphaelites’ and re capture the style of an earlier period. All were likewise inspired by literature; numerous Pre-Raphaelite paintings depict Shakespeare’s characters for example, Ophelia being the most popular, though Waterhouse also painted canvases inspired by

The Aesthetic Movement
ho were the Pre-Raphaelites? The name and the term "Pre-Raphaelite" has been applied to many artists and their work long after the original Pre-Rapahelite Brotherhood had ceased to exist. The P.R.B. and their followers manifested some ideas of art that inspired and was part of a larger movement in British Victorian painting, decoration and design. They shared the general romanticism and gothicism of the century - appreciation of an historical "medieval" origin - but perhaps more important, they broke with the conventions of the academies and showed a new conception and appreciation of Nature, a new sensitivity. This also was the seed to become the Arts and Crafts Movement and Art Noveau/Jugend. The Pre-Raphaelites, in a wider sense, thus are a link to modern art. But the reason that their work are being rediscovered and popular still today, is their unique qualities. They remain a source of sheer beauty, timeless, beyond de-constructions and post-modernisms, both simple to comprehend and complex - in forgotten emotion and lost virginity. These artists believed in something. The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was formed in 1848 in England, when seven young artists swore themselves to pure aims and renewal of art - art for a better society. Their patrons were a new rich industrial middle class. The three best known names of The P.R.B. is the poetically inspired leader

Introducing the Pre-Raphaelites; painters, lives, contemporaries
Tutor: Rosanna Eckersley Fee £75 Code No. of classes Start date Times 8 + 2 visits TBA Thu 16 Jan Course Outline The first half of this course will focus on the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, including the painters John Everett Millais, William Holman Hunt, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and their associates such as Ford Madox Brown. In the context of a wealthy and self-confident bourgeois society we will look at how and why the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood rebelled against conventional ideas of genre, style and subject-matter current in the late 1840s, and why these paintings are important to the History of Art. We will relate them to the work of contemporaries and the social as well as artistic circumstances in which they were produced, including the significance of new types of patron and the increasing production of prints. We will consider the lives of the artists, and how relationships between them influenced their work, including those of the associated women artists. A visit to the Guildhall Art Gallery or Tate Britain will focus on Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood paintings and other contemporary images. The course will go on to look at developments in Pre-Raphaelite art after the Brotherhood. A continuing emphasis will be on the lives of artists and relevant contemporary social circumstances, including the elevation of artists’ status and wealth fuelled by new ‘avant-garde’ galleries. The relationships between late Pre-Raphaelite painting and modern art will be considered. A gallery visit, perhaps to the Royal Holloway College Gallery, will draw together the themes of the course.

Dante Rossetti - La Ghirandata The Pre - Raphaelites The Pre -Raphaelite Brotherhood was formally founded in the fall of 1848, taking it's name in deference to the painters working before the time of Raphael. The group was convened by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais and was extended to include two more painters, James Collinson and F.G. Stephens and a sculptor, Thomas Woolner. William Rossetti, Dante's brother served as the group's secretary. The movement emerged to some extent as a reaction to the teachings of the academies and their control of the arts. Their belief was that painting should return to the naturalistic and unaffected approach found in the work of artists active during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Their subject matter was drawn from the Bible or medieval poetry and imitated both the style and the form of the art from those times. Although not direct members of the Pre - Raphaleite Brotherhood many artists were heavily influenced by the group and the Romantic movement which began in France. Artists such as Lord Frederic Leightom, Alma - Tadema, John Godward and John William Waterhouse are now linked to the term Pre - Raphaelite and many of these artists are the names that first come to mind when one thinks of this movement.

Glossary Term: Pre-Raphaelites
In 1848, a group of young artists rebelled against the style of art that was being taught at the Royal Academy and other art schools. They felt the art of the day was dark and muddy in color. Nor did they like the subject matters, which they felt to be artificial. Instead they admired the work of the artists of the fifteenth century, with their careful brushwork, serious subjects and bright, fresh colors. These artists began to sign their work with the initials: P.R.B., the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, taking their name from the Renaissance master Raphael. Pre-Raphaelite artists chose subjects from the Bible, Shakespeare and the legend of King Arthur. They used bright colors and painted on a white canvas, rather than a brown one, to give their paintings a lighter, fresher look. Pre-Raphaelite artists believed art should have a serious, moral purpose and often filled their work with many symbols suggesting deeper meaning. While the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood lasted less than ten years as a group, other artists carried on with the style. Artist and poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Other artists of the P.R.B. were Ford Maddox Brown and William Dyce.

Viz. BNL #126.
Painter and engraver, founder with Holman Hunt of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, President of the Royal Academy in 1896, Millais only seems to have made this single ex-libris. He chose St. Christopher as a backdrop to the Sykes arms, for the polititian Christopher Sykes (1831-1898). 3c /2. Frederick Leighton (GB, 1830-1896) GLADYS M. LEIGHTON, P1, 100 x 71, c.1890.
Lord Leighton of Stretton (he was created Baronet in 1886 and a peer in 1896, the only artist to be so honoured) was one of the grandees of the Victorian art world. This ex-libris is not very typical of Leighton’s painting style, and is obviously a small decora-tive piece done for a member of his family. 3c /3.
