      Introduction
Man, so ill prepared to compete in a hostile world, used ingenuity and a little luck to begin the long journey toward civilization. As a hunter-gatherer he led a nomadic life, honing his skills and improving his technology. Once he became a food producer he could settle down and the elements of civilization began to evolve. Prehistoric Art includes cave painting, engraving, sculpture and monolithic architecture. For art considered to be primitive, it is remarkably sophisticated and perceptive. From simple line drawings to polychromatic paintings, from engravings on rock to beautiful three dimensional "Venus" figures, from monolithic monuments to circles and passage graves, art served as a means communication, ritual and an outlet for man's creative spirit. Music and dance also became part of the human experience during prehistoric times. Back to Top

Class Description Back to Top This class is designed to introduce you to the world’s prehistory and to the anthropological field of archaeology. It is meant to appeal to both non-majors and potential majors alike. The world’s past is wondrously interesting and exciting (an evening spent watching the Discovery channel is proof of this!), and we will seek to capture that spirit as we tour the Earth’s ancient places and encounter long-dead peoples. We begin with the human family’s earliest appearance approximately 4-5 million years ago in Africa and, through the course of the semester, will travel down winding historical paths to modern times. Along the way we will encounter numerous archaeological mysteries: What were the Neanderthals like?

As we enter a new century, it becomes clear that we are citizens of an increasingly interconnected globe. In these quickly changing times, we need to be informed about the world we all inhabit. The History Department offers courses in both Western and non-Western history, in early and modern periods, in history and related social studies. The goals of each course emphasize efficient reading of texts and primary and interpretive sources, effective oral presentation, and confident use of maps, tables, graphs, and other nonverbal data. In each course, Internet resources are used and the development of strong writing skills is a priority. Students are expected to master the History Department's Skill Manual and the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers. Two years of History Department courses are required for graduation from Madeira. Noting the requirements of most colleges, we recommend that students take at least three years of history. Modern World History, the foundation course, is usually taken in the ninth or tenth grade and is the prerequisite for other courses in the History Department. Any student who has not taken this course at Madeira needs permission from the Director of Academic Counseling and the head of the History Department before proceeding on to U.S. History. If she has met the content requirements of Modern World History, she will be placed in an intermediate history course to meet the skills requirement in preparation for U.S. History.
