Politics
Portugal is a parliamentary democracy. Legislative power is vested in Parliament, which consists of only one chamber. Members of Parliament are directly elected for a four-year term by a system of proportional representation. The Head of State is the President, who is also directly elected, this time for five years. The President appoints the Prime Minister, can dissolve Parliament and has a restricted right of veto. Portugal consists of 18 administrative districts, each with a governor appointed by the Government. The Azores and Madeira are autonomous regions with their own directly elected regional assemblies and regional governments enjoying wide-ranging powers.
Lisbon is the capital and the seat of Government.

VALE DO AVE is composed of 10 municipalities: Fafe, Guimarães, Santo Tirso, V. N. de Famalicão, Póvoa de Lanhoso, Vieira do Minho, Vizela,
Trofa, Póvoa de Varzim and Vila do Conde, all of them standing by the Rio Ave's riversides. This river has its source in Vieira do Minho and mouth at Vila do Conde.
VALE DO AVE stretches itself along an area of 1469 square Kms in the north of Portugal and has a population of about 600 000 inhabitants always
increasing during the last years. The total population of VALE DO AVE represents 6% of the population of Portugal and 13% of the northern inhabitants.
With a density of population of 387 inhabitants per square Km - more than the northern and national density - the main characteristics: on the one hand, this is a
diffuse population and, on the other hand, this is the youngest population of the Occidental European areas (24% of the VALE DO AVE's population is under 14) -
this is by itself an important potential.

    http://home.online.no/~nancys/portugal/country/
Once upon a time, Portugal was the most powerful and the wealthiest country in the world. Two thirds of the world was discovered by the explorers and sailors of Portugal, and the Portuguese founded the first modern empire. For later generations, it was the poor cousin of Europe.
Despite its turbulent past Portugal is a stable country. The monarchy ended in 1910 and the republic was founded. In 1926 Salazar established his almost 40 years of dictatorship. Portugal became a modern democracy after a peaceful military coup April 25, 1974 that began the rebirth of the country. With the oldest national boundaries in Europe, this country is both ancient and newborn.
The population of Portugal, including the Azores and Madeira islands, is approximative 11 million.
More than 94% of the population is Roman Catholic although freedom of religion is permitted.

Following its heyday as a world power during the 15th and 16th centuries, Portugal lost much of its wealth and status with the destruction of Lisbon in a 1755 earthquake, occupation during the Napoleonic Wars, and the independence in 1822 of Brazil as a colony. A 1910 revolution deposed the monarchy; for most of the next six decades repressive governments ran the country. In 1974, a left-wing military coup installed broad democratic reforms. The following year Portugal granted independence to all of its African colonies. Portugal entered the EC in 1985.

The Azores (Acores) island group lies about 800 miles west of Portugal’s mainland. There are frequent flights from Lisbon to the islands of Sao Miguel and Terceira with connections (including ferries) to most of the other islands. Also volcanic in origin, the Azores are cooler, wetter and are not hyped up for mass tourism. Most travelers come to enjoy the peaceful green mountains and valleys, the small towns with cobbled streets and Baroque churches and the beautiful scenery. A natural charm in the middle of the Atlantic, half way between Europe and North America, consisting of nine islands forming a genuine natural beauty paradise. Lush vegetation contrasts with the soil of volcanic origin of craters and geysers. The climate is mild with the temperature varying between 14 and 22 degree Celcius.
The tranquility of the archipelago is the major attraction. Angra do Heroismo has been classified as world heritage and the remaining cities also have a special charm. This the place to escape to and avoid the hustle of modern life. The islands of the AZORES are spread 650 km (400 miles) apart and fall into three distinct groups. In the east lie Santa Maria and São Miguel, the largest island and home to the regional capital, Ponta Delgada. The main towns in the central group of five islands are Horta on Faial, a popular stopover port for boats crossing the Atlantic and Angra do Heroísmo on Terceira, a busy cosmopolitan city. From here visitors can travel to the other islands of São Jorge, Graciosa and Pico, the last dominated by a towering volcanic peak 2,350 m (7,700 ft) high. Farther west lie the remote, weather'beaten islands of Flores and Corvo.

Portugal's Flag Geography Pages Flags The flag of Portugal is red and green; the Portuguese coat of arms is pictured where the two colors meet. The green symbolizes hope for the future; the red symbolizes the blood of the nation. The Portuguese coat of arms has a white shield (containing five small blue shields with white dots) within a red shield (with seven small yellow castles), surrounded by yellow straps. The five blue small shields represent the five Moorish kings who were defeated by the first King of Portugal. The green part of the flag is by the flagpole and makes up two-fifths of the flag. This flag was first used in 1910. Related Pages: Portugal: Flag Quiz/ Printout Portugal: Outline Map Printout An outline map of Portugal to print.
