(same as H.R. 834)
See Trail Variants Page When Congress passed the National Trails System Act of 1968 (Public Law 90-543), only scenic trails were considered. The first two National Scenic Trails that were named in the 1968 National Trails System Act were the Appalachian Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail. Current efforts are focused on seeking trail equality by allowing variants of the Mormon Pioneer, Oregon, and other variants of the California and Pony Express Trails to be acknowledged and included in the National Trails System Act.
Two bills have been introduced in the 107th Congress, H.R. 37 by Congressman Doug Bereuter , NE, and S. 213 by Senator Orrin Hatch Title: To amend the National Trails System Act to update the feasibility and suitability studies of 4 national historic trails and provide for possible additions to such trails. (The wording on both is the same.) H.R. 37 passed the House, June 7, 2001. S. 213 is still languishing since the end of January in the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, waiting for the change in leadership to set priorities. We need help on the senate side.

Main Marysville Hollenberg Station Rock Creek Station Gothenburg Station ... Julesburg I 'll confess, one of the reasons I like to explore the Pony Express Trail is that it gives me yet another excuse to visit Nebraska, one of my favorite vacation states. But above and beyond that, there's something inherently romantic about this trail and what it represents. This is the stuff of which the corny cowboy shows of my boyhood were made, but the real story is anything by corny.
T T he trail ran through parts of eight different states. My partner and I have only visited three of these so far, and hence have quite a bit more traveling to do. But perhaps if you stop back here at a later date, you'll find some more entries!

About the Historic Pony Express Trail
B y 1860 or so, a freight and stage route was in place which followed quite a bit of the Oregon and California Trails across the American continent. However, this hadn't become a profitable affair yet, and so the owner, one William Russell, proposed establishing an additional mail service with the intent of generating new revenue. Instead of cumbersome wagons, speedy ponies would be pressed into service to carry letters and lighter parcels across the country. It was hoped that this would bolster profits and draw attention to the ailing freight company.

This time of growth is called the westward movement or westward expansion. Explorers and Europeans from Columbus to the Pilgrims, traveled west to settle "new" worlds. After the United States became a "new" nation, settlers looked west and longed to explore the great unknown lands beyond the mighty Mississippi River. Daniel Boone was responsible for leading adventursome Americans west into Kentucky in the 1770's. Later, pioneers traveled west on the Oregon Trail in the 1840's. Adventure and exploration were the heart and soul of many early Americans. Many adventursome early Americans set the course of history for United States expansion. Chronological timelines present a framework for students to examine the major events of a specific time period. The events in time listed below are not all inclusive, but does provide a good starting place for students to begin to learn about westward expansion.

Westward Expansion (September 2002)
Here are some Web sites to help teachers and students explore the theme of Westward expansion in the United States.
(Westward expansion is the theme of the PBS Digital Classroom project that ECB is currently carrying out at Cherokee Middle School in Madison to test the use of digital television and other technologies in the classroom.)
Lewis and Clark
is one of the programs used for the Digital Classroom Project. The companion Web site from PBS includes information about all members of the Corps of Discovery that made the famous journey west, as well as an 1803-1838 timeline of events.
New Perspectives on the West
, which focuses on expansion in western North America, is the companion Web site for The West , another PBS program being studied in the Digital Classroom Project. It provides information on the people, places, and events that shaped the West, including a biographical dictionary, an interactive map, and a timeline.

From Geography to Government, a sequence of eight titles is an extensive, integrated solution that is fully correlated to major mastery standards, including the National Council for Social Studies Standards. Social Studies is a subject area that promotes the use of both cooperative and exploratory learning. The detailed maps and charts dynamically illustrate key concepts. Additionally, these maps and diagrams can be printed for use in discussion and as take-home study guides for the students. The titles seamlessly work together to give students a broad view of Social Studies. For example, lessons 31-35 from the U.S. History I title deal specifically with westward expansion. These lessons can be put immediately after U.S. Geography lessons 20-28, which discuss the Southwest, Mountain, and Pacific regions of the United States.
