Salvation Army Biographies General Albert Orsborn Back to biographies index General Albert Orsborn Albert Orsborn was born on September 4th 1886, at Maidstone, Kent, the son of Salvation Army Officers. his school years were difficult, mainly brought about through having to change schools ten times when his parents were posted to different Corps. His final schooling was in Manchester, where, at the age of thirteen, he passed what was then known as a ‘Labour Examination’. This enabled him to get a job sweeping floors and washing bottles in a chemist shop for the grand sum of six shillings and sixpence a week. This meagre wage however, was a very welcome addition to the family income which was often stretched to breaking point. In 1899 Albert’s parents were posted to London and he obtained a job as an office boy in the Chief Secretary’s department at International Headquarters. Albert Orsborn first sought Salvation at Walthamstow Corps in East London, but it was at a youth camp at Hadleigh with General Bramwell Booth, that he committed himself to full-time service for the Lord. In 1905, when his parents were serving as Corps Officers at Clapton Congress Hall, he offered himself up for Officership, and, with his good friend Harry Bramwell Howard, son of Commissioner and Mrs T. Henry Howard, entered training.

Seamus Justin Heaney
Nationality Irish
Career: Poet, critic, essayist, translator and editor Childhood in Ulster informs poetry Born April 13, 1939, Heaney's childhood in a rural area near Ulster, Northern Ireland, informs much of his poetry, including his first volume, Death of a Naturalist (1966), for which he won immediate popular and critical success. In most of these poems, Heaney describes a young man's responses to beautiful and threatening aspects of nature. In "Digging," the poem that opens this volume, he evokes the rural landscape where he was raised and comments on the care and skill with which his father and ancestors farmed the land. Heaney announces that as a poet he will metaphorically "dig" with his pen. In many of the poems in his next volume, Door into the Dark (1969), he probes beneath the surface of things to search for hidden meaning. Along with pastoral poems, Heaney focuses on rural laborers and the craftsmanship they display in their work. Heaney left Northern Ireland when the "troubles" resumed in 1969. After teaching in the United States, he settled with his family in the Republic of Ireland. The poems in

Biographies of the featured poets Li Po (Japanese Rihaku) (701-762) Chinese poet, one of the greatest figures of Chinese literature. Li Po (or Li Bai) was born into the minor nobility in what is now Sichuan (Szechwan) Province. After an apprenticeship with a Daoist hermit and a time of wandering, he lived briefly as a poet at the Tang dynasty court in Changan but left as the result of intrigue. Then he returned to a life of Daoist study and carefree reflective wandering, writing poems and enjoying nature and the pleasures of wine, supplied free by the emperor's orders. According to legend, Li Po was drowned while drunkenly leaning from a boat to embrace the Moon's reflection on the water. Poem: "Lament of the Frontier Guard" John Donne (1572 -1631) A noted english poet and essayist, Donne sailed with the Earl of Essex and Sir Walter Raleigh in the naval expeditions against Cadiz in August 1596, where the inspiration for his poem "The Burnt Ship" occurred. Walt Whitman (1819-1892) During the Civil War Whitman ministered to wounded soldiers in Union army hospitals in Washington, D.C. He remained there, working as a government clerk, until 1873, when he suffered a stroke that left him partially paralysed. Poem: "Come up from the fields, Father"

Phillis Wheatley
Read her poem "To His Excellency, General Washington" (c. 1754-1784)
Nationality: American
Career: Poet Wheatley was born in 1753 or 1754 in West Africa (present-day Senegal), kidnapped, and brought to New England in 1761. John Wheatley, a wealthy Boston merchant, bought her for his wife, Susanna, who wanted a youthful personal maid to serve her in her old age. Wheatley was frail and sickly, but her gentle, demure manner charmed Susanna. The child learned to read and write quickly and became proficient in Latin, so the Wheatleys assigned her only light housekeeping duties and encouraged her to study and write poetry. As a result, she achieved a high level of education rare for upper-class colonial men, let alone women or slaves. In fact, Wheatley was treated less like a servant and more like a member of the Wheatley family. She was given a private, well-heated room and a lamp to use at night. She was free to visit with the Wheatleys' friends but forbidden to associate with other slaves. It is believed that Wheatley began writing in 1765. Her poem "An Elegiac Poem, on the Death of That Celebrated Divine, and Eminent Servant of Jesus Christ, the Reverend and Learned George Whitefield" gained her national and international attention when it was published locally in 1770 as a broadside pamphlet and then reprinted in newspapers throughout the American colonies and in England. Wheatley continued to write elegies and honorific verses to commemorate the lives of friends and famous contemporaries as well as poems to celebrate important events.
