Official List of Endangered and Threatened Plants in Maine How do we know which of Maine's native plants are rare? Endemism - geographically restricted to the State or areas immediately adjacent to the State. Few Populations - extremely small number of populations. (3) Few Individuals - numerically scarce, small number of individual plants. (4) Special habitat - requiring habitat that is scarce in the State. Limit of range - edge of distribution or disjunct from main distribution. (6) Population declining - seriously declining due to habitat modification or destruction, or from over collection for commercial, recreational, or educational purposes. (7) Population vulnerability - highly vulnerable to decline due to location or human usage. How do we keep the The list is kept up to date through a process of periodic review. The Botanical Advisory Group reviews each species and modifies its status based on the most recent population numbers and the established criteria. Changes to the list are based on new botanical inventory information such as whether populations have been destroyed or newly found, and also on recent taxonomic studies. A biennial update of the list enables its various users to have the most current information when conducting field surveys, performing environmental assessments, or in conducting biological research. Justifications for listings and all supporting data are maintained within the Biological and Conservation Data System at the Maine Natural Areas Program.

ABOUT US CONTACT A bit of explanation:
The following list contains all of the vascular plants (trees, flowering plants, and non-flowering plants, ferns and lichens) that are listed as endangered or threatened in North Carolina. The list includes plants that are not included on the Federal Endangered and Threatened lists but are included here because the populations in North Carolina are low enough to make them rare in our state . In other words, there may be species on this list that are out of their normal range in North Carolina and found only in one or two locations, and hence are considered threatened in our area. Endangered and Threatened Plants
There are approximately 250,000 kinds of flowering plants on earth today. It is estimated that some 60,000 of those may become extinct by the year 2050. More than 19,000 kinds of plants are considered threatened or endangered all over the world. What is an endangered plant?
Some endangered plants naturally grow in small populations in limited areas. Others may grow in large populations but in only a few fragile habitats. Some plants may occur over a wide range but be vulnerable to competition from non-native plants. Still other plants may be common in cultivation, but almost extinct in their native habitat. These sometimes confusing factors must all be weighed in deciding what is an endangered or threatened plant. But the importance of this effort cannot be underestimated. The New York Botanical Garden is committed to study, maintain and preserve the diversity of the plant kingdom before more plants disappear forever. Why do we need plants?
Plants are essential to all human and animal life. Green plants are the only living things on our planet which can combine the energy of the sun with water and carbon dioxide to produce food to sustain themselves and animals, including humans. Plants cover much of the land surface of the planet and are abundant in the oceans as well, producing the food and much of the oxygen on which all living things depend. This great diversity of plant species provides us with food, shelter, clothing, fuel and medicine. Many people are unaware of our underlying dependence on the whole plant kingdom for our very existence.

With 100s of plants and animals listed as Endangered or Threatened, there are more endangered species per square mile on these islands than any other place on the planet. T he Hawaii Biological Survey compiles information on all of these species with the assistance of various state, federal, and local agencies and works with these partners to disseminate this information, including these web pages. Please feel free to browse our pages, see images of these rare and fragile species, learn about their biologies, habits, and where they occur in the Islands.

Threatened Plants Database
The Threatened Plants Database has been developed over a period of many years and currently contains data on more than 140,000 plant names, providing a unique overview of plants threatened at global level. The 1997 IUCN Red List of Threatened Plants was produced directly from this database. Tree Conservation Database
The Tree Conservation Database was developed from the Threatened Plants Database between 1995 and 1998 and contains updated information on over 8000 tree species, and 1994 IUCN Red List Categories. The World List of Threatened Trees was published as a result.

Conservation and Sustainable Use
The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew is widely recognised as one of the leading centres for advice and action on aspects of plant and fungal conservation. Conservation programmes are undertaken on a wide range of endangered and threatened plants and their habitats. An advanced range of techniques, including storage and cryopreservation of seeds, embryos and pollen, and micropropagation, are used to support both ex situ and in situ conservation projects. We are increasingly called upon for advice and to help with the development of international conservation strategies. Many of our activities also contribute to the implementation of the objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) , namely the conservation of biodiversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from access to genetic resources. On 6 March 2001, Kew endorsed the Principles on Access to Genetic Resources and Benefit-Sharing developed by 28 botanic gardens and herbaria from 21 countries worldwide (also available in French German Portuguese Russian and Spanish ). Minnesota's list of endangered, threatened and special concern species
Definitions
A species is considered endangered if the species is threatened with extinction throughout all or a significant portion of its range within Minnesota. A species is considered threatened if the species is likely to become endangered within the foreseeable future throughout all or a significant portion of its range within Minnesota. A species is considered a species of special concern if, although the species is not endangered or threatened, it is extremely uncommon in Minnesota, or has unique or highly specific habitat requirements and deserves careful monitoring of its status. Species on the periphery of their range that are not listed as threatened may be included in this category along with those species that were once threatened or endangered but now have increasing or protected, stable populations.
Minnesota's endangered species law
Minnesota's Endangered Species Statute (Minnesota Statutes, Section 84.0895) requires the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to adopt rules designating species meeting the statutory definitions of endangered, threatened, or species of special concern. The resulting List of Endangered, Threatened, and Special Concern Species is codified as Minnesota Rules, Chapter 6134. The Endangered Species Statute also authorizes the DNR to adopt rules that regulate treatment of species designated as endangered and threatened. These regulations are codified as Minnesota Rules, Parts 6212.1800 to 6212.2300.
