According to the 1995 Nationwide Personal Transportation Survey, there are approximately 56 million walking trips that take place every day in the United States. Family and personal business accounts for 43 percent of these walking trips, with another 34 percent for social and recreational purposes. Fourteen percent of walking trips involve travel to school or religious activities, while only 7 percent of these trips involves commuting to work. Walking is the second most use of travel, so it's clear that at one point in time everyone is a pedestrian. Prevent Pedestrian Crashes: Preschool Children Here are some facts you should know: Preschool children are quick and often unaware of danger. Each year, many children are injured or killed when they suddenly dart into the path of a car.
  • Most preschoolers are injured near their home or on their own street.

CRITICAL ELEMENTS OF SCHOOL-TO-WORK REFORM
ELEMENT NINE: PROGRESSIVE SYSTEMS THAT START BEFORE GRADE ELEVEN
Programs that do not start until eleventh grade miss the chance to make a difference for many students. It is crucial to reach younger students before they become discouraged, disengaged, or drop out. Common sense and research both support the concept that a student who understands the connection between school and workbetween lifelong learning and a successful lifewill be much more motivated to succeed in school.
Education for Employment Program, Kalamazoo, Michigan
In Kalamazoo, the career planning or Educational Development Plan (EDP) process begins in the eighth grade. Its purpose is to shift the emphasis to asking students what they want to be, rather than whether they are going to college. The consortium has eliminated the general education program, requiring students to choose either the baccalaureate or tech prep option. The EDP process is fundamentally a process of long-range planning. Based on the testing and conversations among students, parents, and counselors, students begin setting career goals. They receive a notebook of career cluster options along with a listing of the necessary high school courses for associate and baccalaureate degrees. Sample jobs are listed within each "job family," and students meet with counselors to decide which courses would be best for them. Each student goes through this process to produce an individualized plan that shows what courses they need to complete in high school in order to pursue the career path of their choice, including community college and university training.

by Jolayne Houtz
Seattle Times staff reporter Seattle teachers would work in their classrooms four days a week and take the fifth day for planning, training and parent conferences under a bold new proposal by Superintendent John Stanford. On the fifth day, students would be taught by teams of specialists - librarians and music, physical education and computer teachers - who would line up field trips and guest speakers or teach art, dance, sports or other "hands-on" activities. "If we're going to do anything to change the culture of public education . . ., we must train teachers and we must do it massively, not in little dribbles," Stanford said. Stanford's idea is to focus everything that takes time away from basic academic instruction - planning, parent conferences, field trips, even doctors' appointments and student suspensions - on one day of the week and make sure the other four days are "chock-full of academics." Students would spend the same amount of time in school. Teachers already are out of their classrooms more than 20 days in a 180-day school year. That includes sick days, training days and closure for five to seven days for conferences and in-service time, Stanford noted.

[Headnote] This simple 12-step approach will keep you - whether you're an experienced or new teacher - organized all year long and add sparkle to your lessons
Planning a unit of instruction can, at times, be an overwhelming task. Make life a little easier on yourself with this simple 12-step approach that is not only logical, but it will keep you - and your unit organized. I've also seen terrific results when I've presented these steps to new teachers who are learning how to develop curriculum that includes all of the essential lessons, activities and evaluations. Here's how to get started: Select a Topic. Choose one that isn't too broad. These questions can help you make your decision:
  • What must I teach to fulfill state, district and local standards?

Union anger at teaching role for class assistants
Rebecca Smithers, education correspondent
Friday October 18, 2002
The Guardian
The government is to defy the main teachers' union and announce next week plans to boost the role of classroom assistants by allowing them to teach some lessons. A new category of "high-level teaching assistants", who have experience of supporting teachers in the classroom but are not qualified themselves, will be able to take drama or music classes and supervise school trips and assemblies.

Our performing stage overlooks the
beautiful Nahatlatch river. REO is hosting the second annual Irish Dance Camp for youth, adults and their families Sunday, July 28 to Saturday, August 3, 2003.
The week-long Irish Dance Retreat is being taught by two-award winning professional instructors, Nora Pickett and Michelle Kilby, each with over 20 years dance experience (see their dance resumes below). The retreat is expected to draw participants from Europe, United States, and Canada. Our 2002 retreat attracted five dancers from Switzerland.
Our location at the edge of a rushing river is the perfect setting for a river dance. Each day, participants will enjoy four hours of dance training on our river edge stage. These workouts will be excellent aerobic exercise. Everyone who loves to dance is encouraged to attend the retreat even if they have no previous experience. All participants will be divided into small groups by level of experience for the daily instruction. At the end of the weeklong camp, the students will put on a show for REO’s weekend guests with fiddlers and musicians playing Irish jigs to back up the routines.

Planning for the Ultimate One Computer Classroom Over the years there have been many writings on how to deal with one computer in a classroom. As more schools get connected to the world wide web and add technology to the school infrastructure, the question still remains ; If I only have one computer in my classroom , what is the most effective way to share Internet resources with a room full of eager children ? Here are some ideas to consider before breaking out your surfboard. Take Baby steps. You are the one familiar with your curriculum. Begin to target specific sites that match what you already teach. There are places on the Internet that identify quality sites and give descriptions of what topics and age levels they are appropriate for. Examples of such places include Classroom Connect on the Net The Global Schoolhouse , and our own Montgomery County Intermediate Unit . If you match one or two sites per topic that you teach, it is a great start. Plan for how you can best "share" your monitor. Not all of us can afford expensive projection units that provide large colorful displays of the web. So the problem remains . How can I share this great Internet connection with my twenty-five pupils ?
