21. You Want To Be A Teacher?
Educational planning. people the chance to demonstrate the principals and theoriesthey teach. Museums often hire people to develop programs for school trips.

Alternatives to Regular Teaching There is a chance that after attending a Faculty of Education, you will discover that teaching is not what you expected. You may feel that you do not want to teach at all or that you would like to continue your own learning before becoming a full-time teacher. This section of the booklet contains a list of Master's programs and employment that you might want to look into. Due to the scope of this booklet, it is impossible to include all of the alternate possibilities. Hopefully, however, you will get an idea of the vast and diverse prospects available to you.
Master's Programs : You may be surprised at the number of Master of Education programs that are available. Many of the graduate programs are designed to enhance teaching skills within an area of specialization. Universities across Canada offer Master of Education programs in science, French, geography, visual arts, physical education, etc. just to name a few. To find out if your subject area has a graduate program look in the " Directory of Canadian Universities " in the Career Services, CEC (Main floor).

Overview Adventure America with Adventure Cycling Association
Adventure Cycling Association is the largest non-profit, member-driven bicycling tour organization in America. For over 25 years Adventure Cycling members have enjoyed stories for traveling bicycle tourists in the Adventure Cyclist magazine and taken advantage of huge discounts on maps from 30,000 miles of mapped bicycle routes on the National Bicycle Route Network. Members have also supported efforts to improve conditions and information resources for bicycle touring, and participated in an active bicycle touring program.
Adventure Cycling has been planning tours and educational programs since 1974. Today, it has a unique and diverse selection of tours that offer something appealing to just about any cyclist. Adventure Cycling Association leads self-supported cross-country expeditions, fully catered seven-day bicycling events, and unique educational courses. Over 1,000 cyclists will tour or participate in educational programs with ACA in 2003.
Events – Seven-Day Camping Trips with Vehicle Support and Catered Meals
Events
are the most popular way to tour by bicycle in the United States. Nearly every state has at least one major annual event and new ones pop up every year. The Event format makes it easy for people to enjoy hassle-free cycling in scenic destinations, regardless of their ability level. Experienced cyclists and greenhorns alike come from all over the world to participate in these trips. The large group size makes it easy to fit in, find like-minded friends and form lifelong bonds. Many people love to ride their bikes but are intimidated by or uninterested in self-supported touring. Events are the perfect way for them to use their bikes as a means of exploration and discovery. For some, Events are the first step towards travelling self-supported (without vehicle support) in the future. For others, events are a great way to tour by bike while enjoying some creature comforts.

Professional Development
Because of the depth and complexity of the CAPE initiative, and because it calls on schools and arts organizations to change some of their basic operating principles, the project was constructed with many layers of technical support, advisement, and accountability. One of the primary learnings from the first nine years of the CAPE initiative is the need for a clearly articulated methodology for taking arts education partnerships through a coherent planning and implementation process.CAPE's methodology, as documented in the book Renaissance in the Classroom: Arts Integration and Meaningful Learning , has been praised for its innovative approach to improving teaching and learning.
Professional Development Courses
CAPE's professional development courses and workshops will guide you through the process of incorporating the arts into everyday teaching practices. The courses and workshops are taught by experienced arts integration practitioners who have successfully demonstrated academic improvement through the arts at their schools, and by experts in curriculum planning and whole school improvement. They will show you how to effectively build an arts integration program in your classroom, while accessing Chicago's vast cultural resources.
CAPE's approach has developed a long-standing reputation for both high quality curriculum development as well as for effective, practical professional development for teachers.

In a way, my travels started in the fourth grade in St. Louis when I went on a school field trip to nearby Springfield, Ill., the home and burial place of Abraham Lincoln. I don't remember the modest house where three of Lincoln's sons were born or the Old State Capitol. But I can still see the gleaming yellow school bus that took me and my classmates on the adventure, as potent to me then as Dorothy's ruby slippers.
This school trip and others seeded my desire to see the world.
"Children get a sense of independence and discover that they are citizens of the world," says Margaret Bowles, associate head of academic affairs at Viewpoint, a private K-12 school in Calabasas, Calif., who has taken school groups as far afield as China.
Moreover, school trips teach children how to handle themselves away from their parents, how to eat in a restaurant and behave during a lecture. "A lot is learned in terms of life skills," says Vincent Ferrandino, executive director of the National Association of Elementary School Principals in Alexandria, Va.
Of course, the real purpose of a school trip is to teach children about a specific subject Colonial America in Williamsburg, Va., ecology in Southern California's Channel Islands and the animal world at the San Diego Zoo. Educators say such trips are an important part of school curricula at all levels.

http://mountainschool.net/aboutus.html
About Northwest Mountain School Who Are We
The Northwset Mountain School specializes in adventure travel programs in the Pacific Northwest U.S., Canada, and Alaska.
Type of program: Wilderness expeditions
Class size: 8-10 students per group
Head of Program: John Race, Director Location:
The Northwest Mountain School is located in Leavenworth, WA. Leavenworth is home to world class backpacking, skiing, rock climbing, fly fishing, mountain biking, and just about any other outdoor activity you may be interested in. Most programs take place in the mountain ranges within a few hours drive from Seattle. Locations vary from original-growth forests and alpine glaciers to sage-brush deserts and rivers in the Olympics, Cascades, and Alaska. Most trips start at the Seattle-Tacoma airport, and then proceed to a base area in the Cascades. Background and Philosophy
The Northwest Mountain School was formed in 1994 to give young people the opportunity to experience purposeful trips in the backcountry. John Race, a professional mountain guide for 13 years, started NMS to combine his love of mountain environments with his extensive mountain guiding experience. Students spend time honing camping, climbing, and paddling skills, while also having the opportunity to study the plants, animals, geology, and history of the Pacific Northwest. During the adventures, friendships are formed that will last a lifetime. Every NMS program seeks to teach safe back country travel, while encouraging fun, goal-oriented activities in mountain environments . The physical and intellectual challenges encountered in the Pacific Northwest mountains offer time for reflection and personal growth during activities led by professional mountain guides and naturalists.

http://mountainschool.net/faq.html
Northwest Mountain School Frequently Asked Questions What type of food do we eat on NMS trips?
We provide food that has been chosen for its nutritional value, appeal, and ability to meet the needs of our active youth courses. While taking into consideration ease of preparation and pack-ability, we make every effort to choose meals and snacks that are tasty and satisfying. Most of the food is similar to the type of food you eat at home. We try to eat fresh fruit and vegetables before and after each backcountry section, and we always eat well balanced meals in the field. In general we avoid using freeze dried foods. What type of medical training does staff have?
All trip leaders are required to have a Wilderness First Responder (WFR). The WFR certification involves 80 hours of in depth medical training, and is the only program which teaches people specifically how to handle emergencies in the backcountry. Many staff members have EMT certification. All lead staff members have practical field experience handling medical problems in back country settings. As a company, we emphasize the importance of good planning, good judgment, and a conservative approach to potentially risky activities. A conservative approach taken by skilled leaders is the most important factor in preventing student injuries. What about drinking water?

Courses frequently taught: EDUC 4411/5705: Educational Psychology and Theories of Learning and Development (Elementary Teacher Education Program)
EDUC 6328: Advanced Child Growth and Educational Development (Spring 1999)

In this seminar, we examine theoretical and empirical work on children's development with a focus on their implications for education, including learning in and outside of school. The primary emphasis of the course are Piagetian and Vygotskian perspectives on cognitive development from birth through adolescence. Four topics form the basis of readings, discussion, and assignments: (a) Vygotskian and Piagetian ways of understanding and studying children's development, (b) descriptions of children's developing understanding of various topics (e.g., mathematics, science, the arts, AIDS), (c) children's social and emotional development, and (d) the application of theory and research findings to children's formal and informal education. EDUC 6804: Learning in Informal Educational Settings (Summer 2002)
EDUC 8348: Seminar in Human Development (Spring 1999)

The focus of this advanced seminar is socio-cultural-historical approaches to understanding children's development and learning in school and out-of-school settings. Building on the work of Vygotsky, we examine some of the major concepts in sociocultural theory, including mediation, learning in the zone of proximal development, activity theory, the development of academic and everyday concepts, and the nature of discourse in classrooms and other settings. We apply these concepts to examine issues related to learning in classrooms (e.g., reform-based math and science instruction, group differences in achievement) and children's learning outside of school.

http://www.vso.org.uk/graduates/mathsscience.htm
There are limited opportunities for graduates of science (especially physics and chemistry) and maths who have an interest in teaching. Recruiting graduates without a teaching qualification enables VSO to meet a larger demand for teachers than would be possible if we exclusively recruited trained teachers. Volunteers must meet the professional requirements set by the government of the country where they are placed, and must also be accepted by the headteacher of their school. In a developing country, where few people have the opportunity of further education, school teachers often do not have formal teaching qualifications. In this context a graduate in a shortage subject like science or maths, who has had the benefit of VSO teaching skills training, can make a valuable contribution to their school. Volunteers teach up to either GCSE or 'A' level Standard, or national equivalents. Subjects will be one or a combination of physics, chemistry, integrated science, biology, maths and occasionally IT. English is the medium of instruction in most schools, although it will be a second or third language to the students, who will need time to get used to your strange accent! You do not need to be a language expert to teach science with VSO, although most volunteers learn enough Swahili, Shona or Chichewa to barter for tomatoes in the market and keep up with staff room gossip.
