History
Abercorn is the site of an ancient Celtic Christian centre which once played a highly significant role in Scottish history, despite its modest size. St. Ninian allegedly visited Abercorn on his mission to the Southern Picts in the C5th, and following the Northumbrian defeat of Gododdin in AD 638, and the subjection of the Southern Picts, Abercorn became an Anglo-Saxon episcopal centre in AD 678 which briefly controlled South-Pictish Christianity under Bishop Trumwin. However, the Anglo-Saxon hegemony in the North came to an abrupt end with their defeat by the Picts at the Battle of Dunnichen in AD 685, and Trumwin beat a hasty retreat South to Whitby. According to the Anglo-Saxon historian, Bede:

Tribes of native people were thought to be war-like, fought naked in battle, fought between themselves, and were basically barbaric in their culture. Agricola leading four Roman legions wages battle with the 'Caledonians" in the battle at Mons Graupius (~Aberdeenshire). The barbarians, led by 'Calgicus', was referred to by the historian Tacitus as "a man of high courage and lineage"
Tacitus (Agricola's son in law) wrote that the Caledonians had "reddish hair and large limbs" Construction of the Hadrian Wall (along the River Fife), the dividing line between modern day Scotland and England, to defend against the unconquered barbarians to the north. A tribute to the tribal bands who, faced with the Roman challenge, became organized into a successful defense Only four Roman writers mention the Picts by name (Picti or Pretanii). The first reference by Eumenius in 297 AD, in a description of travels by Constantius in and to the north coast of Scotland, described 'a nation, still savage and accustomed only to the hitherto semi-naked Picts and Hibernians as their enemies, yielded to Roman arms and standards without difficulty.' This is in reference to the original conflicts between the Picts and Agricola.

87. Overview Of Ancient History

http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Crete/3458/ancient5.html
Back to Home Page Before I proceed, I think it necessary to outline a sequence of events as I think they happened. This sequence is by no means etched in stone and I might change the order of some of these events as I gather new information. Creation Adam and Eve expelled from the Garden of Eden Cain born Cain kills Abel Cain isolates himself from the rest of humanity. Has a son named Enoch and builds a city by that name. The following is pure speculation. Here we have the first reference in the Bible of the building of a city. The second time we read of a city being built is when the builders of the Tower of Babel decided to build a city. At that time, the building of a city was associated with the building of a tower whose top somehow pertained to Heaven. Could it be that the building of the tower of the city of Enoch was associated with a tower also? One whose top pertained o Heaven? If so, we would have the true beginnings of man's space program. Seth born Enos born. Men begin to distance themselves from their Creator On Cain's line, Mehujael was born. His name means "Smitten of God"

A Virgin Immortalised by Burns

Introduction Sometimes these stories have been to entertain; sometimes, in an era before universal literacy, to preserve history and tradition orally; sometimes to scare visitors or the unsuspecting; sometimes to encourage religious fervour. But, quite often, they were told simply because people have vivid imaginations and like telling or hear a good story. The South Rhins has been inhabited from as early as 8000 BC when nomadic European tribes followed the retreating glaciers of the last Ice Age and, with such a long continuous history of settlement, it is hardly surprising that it enjoys a rich tapestry of Myths and Legends. Since good stories travel well, some of these, with local variations and embellishments, are replicated in other parts of the country - and beyond. Some, however, are particularly to the South Rhins, even if little physical evidence remains today of those sites where the various tales are supposed to have happened.

ANCIENT HISTORY
As the retreating ice sheets uncovered the bleak and barren surface of the land, sea levels rose and filled the yawning chasm that would, in time, become the Irish Sea. The time was approximately 11,000 years ago and, save a few migrating birds, neither flora nor fauna decorated the rocky, scree covered panorama. It would not be long, however before the first grasses would appear, and the length and breadth of the land shimmered under constant moisture-laden gales. Within a few hundred years, forests of beech and juniper, alder and birch, would cloak the land, trapping the mists from leaden skies. The stage was set for the arrival of our earliest ancestors – those who would begin the process of transforming this land and capturing it’s shrouded mysteries as captivating tales of legend and myth. The Emerald Isle would at once be both beguiling and forbidding, and the reality no less fascinating than the myths themselves. What would begin as storytellers art millennia ago would evolve into a record that approaches historical text. Never mere fancy, these legends can be viewed as markers of cultural change, and as such, they may provide a vivid, if exaggerated, glimpse of critical times of transition. Specific facts, such as names, dates, and even places must be treated with suspicion, but behind that façade often lays the framework of a civilization in evolution. Neolithic man also left his physical imprint upon this land . This was The Age of Farming, and, as farmers, they cleared the land aggressively. With well-crafted stone axes they felled the forests that covered the highlands, and then the valleys. Wooden plows left imprints in the soil that have even been preserved to this day. They raised wheat and barley, pigs, goats, sheep, and cattle. The post-holes of

THE MILESIAN IRISH GENEALOGIES
Most of the Irish are descended from one of the three sons of Milesius

Before writing was widespread in Ireland, a class of men were trained
to memorize the hereditary history of their clan and all the descendants
from the founder or progenitor without error or ommission. They were
called "filads".
King Cormac Mac Art, in the third century of the Christian era, ordered
the history of the Irish nation to be compiled. This work was called
"The Psalter of Tara". From this and other more recent works, "The
Psalter of Cashel" was written in the ninth century. The original of this is in a London museum. After Christianity came in the 5th century, the monks recorded all of the history and pedigrees they could find. Most hereditary surnames only came into use in the tenth century, by command of the illustrious King Brian Boru. The harp

    About Scotland
    History
The region comprising present-day Scotland was known after the Roman invasion of Britain as Caledonia. With the sole exception of the Picts, the ancient Caledonians do not figure in historical records.
    Roman Caledonia
    Early Scottish Kingdoms
During the period of Angle penetration in Caledonia, Christianity was widely disseminated among the Picts by Saint Columba , an Irish missionary who came to Dalriada from northern Ireland in 563. Strathclyde and various parts of Pictland had been converted to Christianity before the time of Columba. Between 655 and 664, Scottish missionaries were active in Northumbria, which was then the centre of a pagan revival.
    The Unification of Scotland
In 685 Pictish territory north of the Firth of Forth was invaded by a large Northumbrian army. An overwhelming Pictish victory permanently weakened Northumbrian power in Caledonia. About 730 Angus MacFergus , king of the Picts, subjugated Strathclyde and Dalriada. Relative peace followed until the late 8th century, when Vikings from Scandinavia began to raid the Caledonian coasts. Taking advantage of Pictish preoccupation with the invaders, the Scots and Britons soon regained their independence. In 844 Kenneth MacAlpine , king of Dalriada, and later king of Scotland, who was a descendant of the Pictish royal family, obtained the crown of Pictland, probably with the assent of the harassed Picts. The united kingdoms, officially known as Alban, comprised all the territory north of the firths of Forth and Clyde. Kenneth and several of his successors vainly attempted to subdue the remaining Northumbrian possessions in Caledonia and, in alliance with Strathclyde, tried to halt the raids of the Vikings. Although, with the help of the Northumbrians, the Vikings were prevented from securing a foothold in Dalriada, they seized various coastal areas in the north, east, and west and occupied the Orkney and Shetland islands and the Hebrides. In later times the rulers of England claimed the Scottish domain on the basis of the aid their forebears had given to Alban.
