ON ANCIENT IRISH HISTORY By Ann Morrison Fisher The ancient history of Ireland is cloudy; marvelous records have been preserved in the old Irish books, but it is difficult to distinguish history from myth at remote periods. The Book of the Invasions of Ireland tells of a number of invasions or immigrations, but the recurrence of names and incidents and the semi-fabulous atmosphere leads one to doubt the exact historicity of these accounts. Authorities disagree not only about how many invasions are historical but even about how many invasions the book describes. M. d'Arbois de Jubainville sees seven mythological immigrations: Partholan to Ireland Nemed to Ireland The Firbolg to Ireland The Tuatha de Danaan to Ireland Mile, son of Bile, to Spain The sons of Mile from Spain to Ireland The Picts from Thracia to Ireland and from Ireland to Britain P.W. Joyce lists: The Parthalonians The Nemedians The Firbolgs The Dedannans The Milesians He treats all these as historical immigrations. Sullivan also accepts these five as historical, but Curtayne treats only the Milesians as a clearly historical invasion. Gerald Hawkins writes of the "great corpus of handed-down myth and history" that tells of: The Parthalonians The Fomorians The Nemedians The Fir Bolg The Tuatha de Danaan The Milesians The Dravidians According to the Book of Invasions , the first invasion was that of Cessair or Banba, the first woman to find Ireland before the flood. She came from the island of Meroe in the Nile in Egypt, in a vain attempt to escape the coming flood. Although two ships were wrecked, Cassair escaped to land in Ireland with fifty women and three men. The flood came and only one man escaped by hiding in a cave above Tul Tuinde (Fert Fintain). This Fintan find (the White) son of Lamech survived for many generations and passed on the history of Ireland to each new group of invaders. Now Banba is a goddess; in the original story she must also have survived. According to the Chronicum Scotorum, in the year of the world 1599 there came into Hibernia a daughter of the Greeks called Eriu, Banba, or Cesar, but d'Arbois de Jubainville calls this legend a late invention.

Strathearn Perthshire Scotland History Ancient Times The oldest traces of people in Perthshire are of burial mounds, standing stones and circles from 3000BC. Given the widespread traces of these people the population of Strathearn must have been significant, however little is known about them. For an interesting perspective try Ancient Energy of the Earth in relation to the standing stones and circles of the Crieff area. Around 1000BC the first Celts known as Caledonians arrived. They came into recorded history by making none too friendly contact with the forces of the Roman Empire in 84AD. A great battle took place at Mons Grampius possibly somewhere in Strathearn. The Romans claim to have won this battle but only their version of events remains. Across the southern edge of Strathearn they then built a number of forts (Bertha, Fendoch, Strageath and Ardoch) connected by a line of watchtowers and fortlets. This appears to be the first Roman linear frontier (40 years earlier than Hadrian's Wall). Clearly the Romans considered the Caledonians to the northern side of Strathearn a significant threat. The Romans withdrew after a short time. Hadrian's great stone Wall, 170km+ to the south, was constructed 122-8.

Scottish Deerhound Club of America History of Scottish Deerhounds The origin of the Deerhound breed is of such antiquity and the earliest names bestowed on it so inextricably mixed that no sound conclusion can be arrived at as to whether the Deerhound was at one time identical with the ancient Irish Wolfdog and, in the course of centuries, bred to a type better suited to hunt deer, or whether, as some writers claim, he is the descendant of the hounds of the Picts. Very early descriptive names were used to identify the purpose of the dog rather than to identify species. We find such names as "Irish Wolf Dog," "Scotch Greyhound," "Rough Greyhound," "Highland Deerhound." Dr. Caius, in his book Of Englishe Dogges (1576) speaking of Greyhounds, relates: "Some are of the greater sorte, some of a lesser; some are smoothe skynned and some curled, the bigger therefore are appointed to hunt the bigger beastes, the buck, the hart, the doe." All this is relatively unimportant when we can definitely identify the breed as Deerhounds as early as the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. From there on the term Deerhound has been applied to the breed, which of all dogs has been found best suited for the pursuit and killing of the deer. At all times great value has been set on the Deerhound. The history of the breed teems with romance increasing in splendor right down through the Age of Chivalry when no one of rank lower than an earl might possess these dogs. A leash of Deerhounds was held the fine whereby a noble lord condemned to death might purchase his reprieve. Records of the Middle Ages allude repeatedly to the delightful attributes of this charming hound, his tremendous courage in the chase, his gentle dignity in the home.

Cruithne, descendent of Partolan, divided the land of the Picts between his seven sons: Cait, Fidach, Ce, Fotla, Cirig, Fortrenn and Fib. This is the legend passed down through countless generations from its first relation till present day. Ancient Pictish legend relates the narrative of the legend of Cruithne (croo-ny), and tells us of Cruithne, the progenitor of the Pictish nation. Loch Leven - Ancient history The Castle Island today occupies about 8 acres and is about 4 times the size that it was in ancient times following the lowering of the water level in the Loch by 4 feet or nearly 1.5 metres between 1826 and 1836. Up until then, the water came up almost to the castle walls. Ancient History Little is known of the island's early history but it is obviously an easily defended site and could well have had some kind of fort on it even before the days of the Pictish King Brude, son of Dergart, who ruled the area in the 7th or 8th century. The original building is said to have been a fort built by Congal, King of the Picts, in the 6th century but, being of timber, no trace now remains. The first stone castle was probably built during the reign of King Alexander II. In 1256, the boy-king Alexander III and his even younger Queen (daughter of Henry III of England) were taken from Lochleven Castle to Stirling to be kept safe from the English invaders. William Wallace In October 1303, Edward I's army was resting up for the winter. According to Blind Harry the Minstrel, writing in the next century, Sir William Wallace launched a daring raid with 18 of his men on Lochleven Castle, then in the hands of the English. Blind Harry claims that Wallace himself swam naked to the island of St Serfs at the east end of the loch where he collected a boat in which he and his men rowed to the Castle Island and attacked the garrison there. All 30 Englishmen were killed although the 5 women were spared.

The Legendary Land of the Picts They wrote in Historians disagree The search for the vanishing tattoo takes a detour here because Thomas knows that all record of tattoos from this matrilineal culture vanished long ago. Never mind that historians disagree on nearly everything that has been written about the Picts, Thomas doesn't let the lack of facts prevent him from embarking on a pilgrimage to their famous sculptures. In the presence of these " standing stones ", Lockhart conjures up an image of these painted warriors. The fifth century monk, Gildas, called them " foul hordes like dark throngs of worms who wriggle out of narrow fissures in the rock when the sun is high and the weather grows warm ." Loch Ness Monster! Thomas sees them clearly now, his own imagination transposing the mysterious stone sculpted images of animals, abstract designs, and Christian crosses onto flesh . He tells us how the Picts used a blue dye from a mustard plant called "woad" to tattoo their bodies. Did the tattoos indicate rank or caste, were they symbols of religious devotion, an appeal for fertility or simply for decoration? We'll never know. But if an entire society is tattooed from head to toe then surely we cannot underestimate the significance that tattoos played in Pictish culture. Thomas points to something depicted on the standing stone an elephantine animal with flippers. "There's your Loch Ness Monster!" Have we solved another of Scotland's great mysteries?
