    Introduction to Chem/Physics (93 k)
In this course students will learn physical science by exploring a topic, considering the concepts involved, then applying what was learned to a new problem. In this module students will review some of the basic skills and language that will be used in the other lessons. Teaching Notes for the Introduction Module. (15 k)
    Measurement and Graphing (26 k)
The ability to interpret a relationship between variables graphically is an useful skill. Fortunately, most all the physical phenomena we can measure fall into one of the following relationships between variables: none, direct, inverse, square, and inverse square. In this learning cycle students will investigate examples of each of these relationships and learn how to write mathematical expressions to describe them. (13 k)
    Conservation of Mass (33 k)
In this activity students will find a number of stations where they will examine how the mass of a substance is affected by a physical or chemical change. They will make observations, record data and answer questions about each situation. When students have finished considering all the situations they will discuss as a group what they have learned and try to resolve unanswered questions.

    Allen I. Mincer , Chairman
of the Department These are exciting times for the NYU Physics Department. As you browse through these web pages, you will see that we have in recent years attracted faculty who are at the forefront of research in several of the currently most exciting areas in physics. Our faculty also continues their dedication to teaching excellence, and are heavily involved in NYU's core science program. In going through the alumni pages, you will see that your fellow graduates have made major contributions to academia, industry, finance, and government. We are very proud that many of our graduates continue to stay in touch with the Department and contribute to its efforts, and I invite you to do the same.
    Allen I. Mincer
    Henry Stroke
    , Chair of the Alumni
and External Relations Committee The new academic year has brought NYU its 15th President, John Sexton. He will have distinguished input from David Mc Laughlin, professor at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, who has been named Provost. We expect that the Physics Department will continue to flourish under their leadership. Sexton succeeds Jay Oliva, whom many of us remember from the stormy days in the late 60's when he was a most effective ombudsman at University Heights.
We are happy that the effort of intensifying our contact with alumni, by personal visits, attendance at special events and lectures, and by mail, have resulted in a closer knit community. I want to share with you one particular letter which I received from an alumnus, Moses Greenfield, who received his PhD in 1941! He writes: "...My thesis was in astrophysics, done with George Gamow, with the permission of the Physics Department at NYU, since I was in Washington, DC, helping the US Navy in World War II. My professional career was at the University of California at Los Angeles as a Medical Physicist. ..." I hope that we will be able to put on these Web pages a little about his career in this field which was nascent when he started his professional work.
