11) Introduction to Geomorphology
(r) Eolian Processes and Landforms Introduction Eolian landforms are found in regions of the Earth where erosion and deposition by wind are the dominant geomorphic forces shaping the face of the landscape. Regions influenced by wind include most of the dry climates of the Earth ( Figure 11r-1 ). According to the (see Topic ), this would include regions of the world that are classified as arid deserts ( BW ) and semiarid steppe ( BS ). Wind can also cause erosion and deposition in environments where sediments have been recently deposited or disturbed. Such environments include lake and ocean coastline beaches alluvial fans , and farmland where topsoil has been disturbed by cultivation. Figure 11r-1 Global distribution of major deposits of eolian derived sediments. Unlike streams, wind has the ability to transport sediment up-slope as well as down-slope. The relative ability of wind to erode materials is is slight when compared to the other major erosional mediums, water and ice. Ice and water can have greater erosive power primarily because of their greater density . Water is about 800 times more dense than air (density of air is 1.29 kg m , while the density of water is 1000 kg m ). This physical difference limits the size of particles wind can move. The power of wind to erode surface particles is controlled primarily by two factors: wind velocity and surface roughness. Erosive force increases exponentially with increases in wind

What is Physical Geography? 1. Fundamental questions of physical geography So, what is Physical/Environmental Geography about? If you think about the world we live in (the material aspect of the world, to be specific), you'll probably agree that it may be roughly divided into (1) things of natural origin, and (2) things of cultural origin, i.e. created by people. Natural things are also called physical (in the broad sense, meaning non-human) or environmental. One way to answer the question above physical geography is about the physical elements of our world: landforms, soils, rivers, air masses, ecosystems, and so on. The problem with this definition is that every major environmental phenomenon is also studied by its own respective branch of science. Indeed, as the table below shows, landforms are the subject of geomorphology, weather is studied by meteorology, oceans and rivers - by hydrology, etc. Physical Elements of the Environment Science Rocks Geology Landforms Geomorphology Soils Pedology Flora, Fauna

Required Reading: Physical Geography by McKnight.
Objective: This course will examine the natural systems that shape our physical environment. We will explore basic atmospheric processes, broad-scale patterns of vegetation, hydrology, and land-forming agents. We will focus on understanding how fundamental physical processes work, and how these processes sculpt the earth's surface to produce the natural patterns evident in our world.
Exams: There will be four Exams given during this course. Questions will be drawn primarily from the lecture plus there will be a geographic locations section. Make-up exams will be given only in the event of an illness or other verifiable emergency. You will have 24 hours after a missed exam to contact me or leave a message. Please do not contact me at home under any circumstances. The secretaries in the Geography and Geology Department will gladly take a message. All make-up exams will be taken during the one hour immediately after test 4 (Final Exam). It is advisable not to miss the regularly scheduled exams because the make-up exams are significantly more challenging.
Students are responsible for the Scholastic Dishonesty Code, which is in your student handbook. Luton has a well-established international reputation for research in arid environments, volcanic hazards, environmental change and high mountain geomorphology, and this is reflected in the programme. The course focuses on the major environmental systems that interact to create distinctive landscapes. You will be introduced to laboratory analysis and field work to allow you to measure the processes and landforms, and evaluate how landscapes have developed through time. Field work opportunities include areas such as southern Spain or Sicily.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
A background in geography will provide you with a unique perspective for viewing the earth and it will enhance your understanding and appreciation of the landscape around you. This course provides a general introduction to the earth's physical landscape through a better comprehension of the primary "spheres" of the earth: atmo sphere , litho sphere , hydro sphere , and bio sphere . The objective of the course is to give you a basic understanding of patterns and processes in the earth's physical environment through the spatial distributions and interrelations of elements composing each of the four primary "spheres" listed above. Relation to Principles of Undergraduate Learning: This course addresses to some degree all the principles of undergraduate learning, but particularly critical thinking, the integration of knowledge, and the understanding of society and culture (and their impact on the natural environment).

E-MAIL: bgiles@dem.state.in.us Course Objectives Geography 107 is a general introduction to the earth's physical geography: the spatial distributions and interrelations of the earth's climates, landforms, soils, and biological communities. The objective of the course is to give you a basic understanding of patterns and processes in the earth's physical environment. This knowledge is essential for more advanced study of geography, but even if you never pursue the subject farther it will enhance your understanding and appreciation of the landscapes around you. G107 is one of the basic required courses for the geography major and a prerequisite for advanced courses in physical geography. G107 is separate from the G108 physical geography lab, which is an introduction to some of the basic techniques physical geographers use. Both G107 and the G108 lab count toward the Liberal Arts natural sciences requirement. Relation to Principles of Undergraduate Learning: This course addresses to some degree all the principles of undergraduate learning, but particularly critical thinking, the integration of knowledge, and the understanding of society and culture (and their impact on the natural environment).
