Our stars are fading
Our only record of how the night sky has changed over the past century is in danger of vanishing. Most old photographs of the night sky are disintegrating, and an urgent programme to scan them into electronic form is needed.
Today, telescopes record data digitally on computers. But until the 1990s, most observations were recorded on photographic plates and are not available in digital form.
But young astronomers almost never consult these old plates and because of the lack of demand many plates have been mothballed in inaccessible storage sites. The world's astronomical archives contain more than 2 million photographic plates, some more than a century old.
They hold our only information about how stars and galaxies very in brightness over several decades. "The information is unique, because the sky 100 years ago was not the same as it is today" Noah Brosch
Director of Tel-Aviv University's Wise Observatory in Israel. Brosch says the plates could provide vital information about Pluto's orbit. Archive plates have revealed a visible flash that could have accompanied an antique gamma ray burst in 1905. They can also shed light on types of astronomical objects only discovered in modern times. Many of the photographs are disintegrating.

How it began
The foundations of an art: a prehistory of photography
The History of the Camera Obscura
Camera obscura: a dark room with a tiny hole in the wall or the roof, through which the view outside is projected onto the opposite wall or a screen.
The History of Photochemistry A substance which undergoes physical or chemical changes when subjected to light energy is called a photochemical substance.
The Foundations of Modern Photography
The Calotype Process
The calotype process was invented by William Henry Fox Talbot, and was the first positive/negative process. Fox Talbot soaked paper in a solution of sodium chloride, then in a solution of silver nitrate, which formed silver chloride on the paper. It was repeated several times to increase the concentration of the chemicals in the paper, and the paper was then exposed wet. By exposing it wet, and with so much chemicals on it, the exposure time required to darken the paper sufficiently was cut from an hour to ten minutes. Once exposed, the image was fixed with either potassium iodide or sodium chloride. In 1835, he produced what is thought to be his first successful negative on paper.
After further experiments over the forthcoming years, Fox Talbot discovered the invisible latent image and its development with chemicals. He began coating his negative paper with wax, making it more translucent, and was able to produce positive images by projecting the negative image onto a similar material. The essential principles of modern black and white photography are the same as those of the calotype process. However, the process has evolved, and has become much more efficient.

History of South Australian Horses in the Melbourne Cup
by Jenny Barnes. Adelaide bred, owned, trained and raced horses have been involved in the history of the Melbourne Cup since the early days of the race. Within 12 years of the first edition of the Cup in 1861 an Adelaide bred horse had proven successful though his ownership at the time hit the headlines rather than the state of his origin. Don Juan was bred by John Barker and despite his good breeding was sold for a seemingly low price of 50 guineas as a 2yo to James Wilson of St Albans Stud Victoria. It was reported that a leading bookmaker of the time Joseph Thompson bought the horse soon afterwards but put him on a private sale list when the horse did not live up to early expectations. In the spring of 1873 he began to show some form and reportedly Mr J O Inglis bought him days before the Melbourne Cup. In winning the race he set a new race record time before going to win the Royal Park Stakes over 2 miles and Flemington Plate 3 miles before the end of the carnival. His former owner stunned at news of the sale re purchased Don Juan for 2000 pounds after his trio of victories. It proved to be a bad decision as after his next start in the Canterbury Stakes the following January Don Juan died from an apparent ruptured blood vessel in his heart. Eleven years later Adelaide again played a role, albeit small, in the career of the 1884 Cup winner Malua. After completing the Newmarket/Oakleigh Plate double Malua had his first staying test in the Adelaide Cup on a heavy track. After he duly won he was set for and proved victorious in the Melbourne Cup the following spring. Later in his career he won a VRC Hurdle then went on to stud siring the 1891 Cup winner in Malvolio.

    80. Class 5. Social Documentary Photography. History Of 20th Century Photography
here. I did my first history of photography project in those archivesin the late 1970s, a paper on Russell Lee. Trachtenberg. Alan
    http://www.journalism.indiana.edu/syllabi/archives/ccookman/j460spring02/classes
    About the writers / readings
Social documentary photography has a long tradition that stretches back to the middle of the 1800s and links to social painting that dates even earlier. It continues today as a major motivating concept, especially for photojournalists. We will look at early and contemporary work in this traditon, but we will emphasize the Farm Security Adminstration project which took place in America during the Great Depression.
Stryker / Wood reading. Roy Stryker directed the Farm Security Administration project. This memoir, written when Stryker was in his 80s, is the preface to his book In This Proud Land. It relates his intentions, experiences and understandings of the project. The second half of the reading is by Nancy Wood who helped Stryker produce the book. She expands on Stryker's story.
    Small-world-department:
    Trachtenberg.
Alan Trachtenberg is a major historian of America, who turned his attention to writing about photography. He teaches American studies at Yale. Trachtenberg writes about Walker Evans, the most problematic figure in the FSA. Evans denied any political motive, and is generally ranked not with the social documentarians but as one of the greatest art photographers of the twentieth century.
If this reading feels challenging, do not feel bad; it is relatively difficult. Give it your best try anyway.
