It would be easier to let you know what I write and sing about, of course, if you were sitting in the audience of a show of mine. If you could be there, here's what you'd find. My music supports my basic philosophy: I think that children are growing up too fast, and my songs let them dwell in the world where children are most comfortable and let them be kids for a bit longer The other side of it, as I am told by many of you, is that my songs truly remind adults of what it was to be a child, to take them back to their own childhood and experience it again. That re-experiencing seems to warm the heart and, for a little while, it quiets the noisy insistence of modern life. A Little History I grew up in a household where music was ever-present. We always had a piano that my mother played. I began to play around on the piano when I was about 8.

Philosophy Regarding Support Recently I asked some friends of mine, who have an orphanage with over 70 children, "How do you tell your supporters about the needs of your ministry?" They replied, "Oh, we don't do that anymore! Some who follow our ministry got really annoyed so we don't share about needs anymore" "Really? Annoyed? Why is that? " I've spent a lot of time thinking about what my friends told me, because for as often as some of our supporters have asked to be told about the needs of the ministry, others have suggested that we should not do so. However, the Scriptures are really silent on the subject when addressed specifically, though saying much in the context of the subject of giving, which I will share more about later. But where then does the idea come from that needs we have, as individuals or as ministries, should be shared with God alone and not with others? When we were preparing to come into the field, I read everything I could on certain well known missionaries of days gone by. In particular, the lives and works of two of these missionaries I read more than all the others; George Mueller and Amy Carmichael. These two great servants of God were known for their published position against making the needs of their ministries known publicly. I suppose, then, it's natural for those who have shared that they do not think that needs should be published to ask me if I'm familiar with these two missionaries.

The top four high school students debate the question at the national finals and the school with the most winning entries will be named the "Most Philosophical School in America." Registration is free and prizes are offered. Winning entries from previous years are available for viewing. A philosopher of the week will be featured on the Web site during the competition, with quotes and biographical material as well as links to other relevant resources all offering an overview of historically important philosophers.

Stanford Report, July 24, 2002 Kids revel in deep questions posed by Philosophy Institute BY LISA TREI Before Heather Guibert arrived on campus, she thought of philosophy as the purview of "old men with beards, walking around and talking about the sun." But after spending three weeks at the Philosophy Discovery Institute, a residential summer program for high school students, Guibert concluded that the subject can be applied practically and that it has taught her to think more clearly. "I want to build spaceships," said the 17-year-old from West Palm Beach, Fla. "In order to do that, you have to think about everything that could possibly go wrong. It's really the philosophical thought process that helps you determine how to do that." From left, Jessica Travis, Lee Reitrelman, Joel Cretan, Whitney King (speaking) and Jake Haskell took part in a debating exercise at the Philosophy Institute, a summer program for high school students. Goal:
The goal of Kids First is to build community-based support for developing positive activities and programs for our youth.
Kids First Philosophy Eighth and ninth grade students at Eastmont Jr. High School were surveyed (using the Search Institute Profiles Survey) to determine the existence of 40 assets within their community. The surveys were sent to Search Institute for analysis and the results indicated that the average number of assets reported by Eastmont Jr. High School students was 18. This was much lower than expected and demonstrates the need to develop programs to move from the average, 18 assets, to between 31 and 40 assets over the next three to five years. Hundreds of communities across the United States are discovering the power and potential of uniting efforts for asset building. They involve people from all parts of the community in shaping and coordinating strategies that will help all young people be more likely to succeed. The goal of Kids First in our area is to build community-based support for developing positive activities and programs for our youth. We also act as a resource to the community regarding the need for assets.

http://www.campuskids.com/Philosophy.htm
Our Philosophy Campus Kids is a community of people who are diverse in our backgrounds, interests and abilities, but who share a common set of values about children and how we should live together in this camp community. We believe that every person is unique and should be loved and affirmed as she/he is. We believe that a basic community structure is important and gives children a feeling of security, but that each child must be given the freedom to make choices and must be nurtured in her/his individual path of growth. We believe that people should be treated with kindness and respect. We believe that competition is valuable when everyone can achieve success, but that it can be harmful when it is too intense and emphasizes "winners" over "losers". We believe that camp should be fun and that "playing" is the "work" of kids as they learn about the world and their place in it. We believe that everything we do in camp makes a difference in the lives of our campers. We believe in camp and we feel lucky to be a part of this remarkable experience.

Mahatma Gandhi Philosophy home about us mission statement purpose philosophy justification selection criteria roles and responsibilities how you can help! ... comments Early Intervention The Carnegie Council on Adolescent Development in its report Great Transitions; Preparing Adolescents For A New Century suggests that “A crucial need for adolescents is for an enduring, stable and supportive bond with a caring adult.” Carnegie places emphasis on youth between the ages of ten and fourteen and suggests that this time frame may be the best opportunity for providing intervention. This program is consequently focused on identifying students in the fifth grade. In collaborating with these students and their families, the students and families will realize that they can reach goals that might otherwise be unattainable due to socio-economic factors. Each student will be assigned a mentor whose primary role is to guide that student to academic and social success thus fulfilling the required criteria to qualify for a post-secondary school scholarship. Mentoring : Public/Private Ventures, a public policy monitoring organization, suggests “Mentors can make a significant difference in children’s lives. Evaluation results provide clear evidence that involvement in programmatically created relationships with a caring adult can yield a wide range of tangible benefits with youth.” Mentoring serves as the chief cornerstone of the AQFK program. After a caring adult is screened and receives six hours of training, he or she meets with their mentee for approximately one hour per week. Through mentoring our students are provided a “guide on the side”, a positive role model, a support person who believes that that child is special, and has high expectations for that special child’s achievements. Mentors also serve as the anchor for our program as they are the connectors – they link our program to the children’s classroom and parents.

About the Provider Hours of Operation My Philosophy ... Favorite Links My Child Care Philosophy My goal is for every child in my care to grow and thrive, achieving their potential in a safe, comfortable, homelike environment. I created my day care for young children (starting with my grandchildren) because I feel that very young (preschool-age) children develop more rapidly and securely in a homelike setting. I am concerned that many young children in day care centers may not be receiving the individual consideration they need to thrive. I feel young children are too often pressured to engage in highly structured group activities before they are ready, and I believe immensely in the power of learning through play; so there is always abundant time for free play in addition to the preschool curriculum. My practice is to allow children to develop at the pace that is relaxed and comfortable for them, and to offer them support and encouragement throughout their learning process. In this period of development when children are rapidly acquiring language, motor, and early social skills, individual attention helps children to learn rapidly and to gain self-confidence. I also believe young children feel secure in home day care because of the smaller number of children. Familiarity is sometimes easier learned in smaller groups; therefore children can further overcome shyness and build friendships. I believe in providing a warm and safe environment so children can fully express themselves. Throughout the day a child needs to experience lots of nurturing, laughing, smiling, and conversation.

No new stuff - Bill Watterson retired. The Bottom Line Every day's an adventure when you're 6. Pick this up for some really entertaining laughs. Full Review Calvin stands over a sleeping Hobbes with a water balloon at the ready. Upon awakening, Hobbes gently queries, "If today were the last day of your life, would you do anything differently?" A pause. "Especially if, by doing things differently, today might not be the last day of your life?" This is one of my all-time favorites. For anyone who slept through the 1980s, Calvin and Hobbes was a syndicated comic strip that has been collected into a series of books. I have all of them, and still pull them out when I need a laugh. The characters are: Calvin - a six year old with the imagination of an adult and the ethics of an alley cat. Like most little kids, Calvin is very self-absorbed and only views the world as it impacts on him. His imagination is both a blessing and a curse - it takes him away to places where he can be Spaceman Spiff or Stupendous Man, only to have the reality of being a powerless six year old come crashing down.
