Philosophy for Kids
Author:
David A. White, Ph.D.
ISBN: 1-88266470-1
Grade Level: 4-12
An innovative way to open the minds of students, this book acquaints young people with the wonders of philosophy and philosophers such as Confucius, Simone De Beauvoir, Aristotle, John Locke, and Georg Hegel. Arranged according to topic (Values, Knowledge, Reality, and Critical Thinking), activities allow students to explore philosophical concepts and relate them to today's issues. One question to ponder asks, "Do we control technology or does technology control us?" Also included are teaching tips, a glossary of terms, and suggestions for further reading. The Flower Question "Look, Auntie Gertie," shouted Freddie, as he walked past the hall table; those flowers have their heads bowed. Are they praying? Or have they died?" Freddie and his family were just returning home from a four-day trip to the Lake District. His mother, his father, and his sister, Alice, were still getting their luggage out of the car. The chrysanthemums on the hall table had caught Freddie's attention as soon as he got through the front door. Instead of showing him their bright, yellow faced, as they had when he left, the flowers were indeed all bent over. "Not to worry," said Aunt Gertie cheerfully; "they got very thirsty while we were gone. But a drink of cool water is all they need." Aunt Gertie, who was the flower expert in the Davidson family, dropped her suitcase and walked straight into the kitchen. There she filled a small, red watering can and returned to give the chrysants a drink. Freddie looked on thoughtfully. "I didn't know flowers get thirsty," he said. `"Just like you," Aunt Gertie reassured him; "but they take a long, long drink. It will be tomorrow before their thirst is quenched and they're happy again."

Kid-Friendly Philosophy
A Message to Teachers in Chicago's Middle and High Schools
from
the Philosophy Department of Loyola University Chicago
Wonder is part of childhood, and philosophy begins and ends in wonder. Thanks to the federal GEAR UP program and other sources of funding, philosophy professors from Loyola are now available to visit classes or teachers' groups of local middle and high schools. There is no charge for this service. If you're interested in having us, we'd like to participate in a few informal but intelligent discussions of whatever philosophical topics seem appropriate to you, the classroom teachers. By opening up new vistas for young minds, these discussions can give school children a sense of how exciting a liberal education can be. Possible discussion topics are:
  • The Golden Rule The Nature of Friendship Justice The Concept of Race The Uses of Knowledge The Trial and Death of Socrates (not surprisingly, a perennial favorite!) Other issues that you think are important for your students.

NEW TOWN PRIMARY SCHOOL TASMANIA AUSTRALIA PHILOSOPHY FOR KIDS (P4Kids) M y reflection on philosophy is that it's about not the answers but the questions that lead to the answers. When I first started philosophy I thought only about the answers and not the questioning. Philosophy teachers your mind to question things in life and not take anything as it comes. - Rose Rimon-Kerr : Grade 6, 2002 Could you Kill? Explain or describe a scenario where you think you would I read a book once, well it was a series, The Tomorrow series by John Marsden (it is really good). The book was about some kids who go camping and when they get home there is a war and they are the only ones in their small country town in Australia that are not being held captive. They are only kids and they are killing soldiers (the enemy) and bombing the enemy. If I were in a situation where I had to fight for survival I would. I am not the kind of person to sit back, no food or water and not do a thing to help the ones I care for. I would kill people to help my country. I don't think I would feel good about it but I would kill for survival. If my parents or anyone that I cared about had been hurt by someone physically or mentally I would hate that person. If someone killed the person I loved then I would want them killed by me or someone else. If someone was trying to kill someone I loved I would try to kill them first.

All three of these lived in Athens for most of their lives, and they knew each other. Socrates came first, and Plato was his student, around 400 BC . Socrates was killed in 399 BC , and Plato began his work by writing down what Socrates had taught, and then continued by writing down his own ideas and opening a school. Aristotle , who was younger, came to study at Plato's school, and ended up starting his own school as well. In the years after Plato and Aristotle died, in the 200's BC , three famous kinds of philosophy started up in the schools that Plato and Aristotle had started. These are the
