NEWS
April 1999
Of Wild Birds and Pets Sitting before a computer monitor can have its advantages over birding in the field. Admittedly not too many but it does allow you to "meet" people, especially fellow birders, from around the world. It is how I recently "met" Antonie Meiring of the " Farmall Parrot Trust " in South Africa. And therein lies another tale of cyberspace investigative research but I won’t go into that at this point. In essence I asked Antonie for information to help plan my forthcoming trip to the Kruger National Park and in return he asked me to help him out with his flying, and all too brief, trip to Australia later in April. Part of his request involved needing an introduction to Australian aviculturists specialising in parrots. That was a tough nut to crack. I didn’t know any. Birders and people who keep pet budgies in cages tend not to be on similar social circles. In my own case this has not be a deliberate policy. For my sins I even know people who own cats and often find them more knowledgeable, less pontificacious that an awful lot of birders I run into through the course of a day. Fate played its hand via the birding-aus mailing list. A thread appeared discussing which species of birds could be legally "caged’ by the average punter. I tossed in a penny’s worth to which Mike Owen of Mooloolaba replied. To my delight his "signature" contained the appellation

A Parrots Foot Preference May Help Determine Its Talking Ability
by Beth Shery Sisk, Real Macaw Parrot Club member
As French neurologist, Paul Pierre Broca discovered in 1864, the function of speech is handled by the left side of the brain. But, unlike righties, some left-handers use parts of the right side of their brain for processing language. Dr. Peter Snyder, a neuroscientist at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, was intrigued by whether this is strictly a human phenomenon or whether animal brains function the same way. So, he began to look for the right animal model. At the National Aviary in Pittsburgh, Dr. Snyder found the perfect candidates: parrots. Right-footed African Grey parrots, he determined, know more words than left-footed birds.
For 300 years, people have noted the parrots dexterity and tendency to favor one foot over the other when handling food. But all of the scientific attempts to quantify this behavior were deeply flawed, Snyder said. He began by developing the largest and most accurate study to date of parrot footedness, using more than 500 birds, enlisting the publics help. He created questionnaires describing a set of experiments and strict guidelines for carrying them out, and published them in bird magazines and on the Internet. From the responses, Dr. Snyder concluded that parrots in general show a tendency toward left footedness. Among one species, the Australasian Cockatoo, 82% of the birds are left-footedclose to the percentage of humans who are right-handed. That degree of preference is unknown in any other vertebrate animal, including primates.

85. Cockatiels, General Information About The, Intelligence, Disposition, Companions
Cockatiels are parrots and 1 of approximately 340 different species. Pet cockatielsbite less, are smaller, cleaner and quieter than the larger parrots.
http://www.cockatielcottage.net/cockatiels.html
Cockatiels 101 Cockatiels are intelligent, social, companion birds. They are the second most popular pet bird after the parakeet. These elegant looking exotic birds are known for their pumpkin orange cheek patches, bright yellow crests and long sleek tails. Ranging in colors and color variations of yellow, gray, and white, cockatiels provide us with companionship, affection and entertainment. By tending to their needs with love, these charming birds greet us with songs or words when we awaken each morning and amuse us with their antics all day long.
Cockatiels are parrots and 1 of approximately 340 different species. Their name comes from a Dutch word "kakatielje" which means little cockatoo. DNA research (UC-Davis, 1997) shows that cockatiels really do belong to one of the cockatoo families. The scientific name for these elegant birds is Nymphicus, hollandicus, which means "Goddess of New Holland", the name of Australia during 1700s-1800s. Australia is the native homeland of cockatiels. Our pet cockatiels are bred domestically because Australia banned exportation of all native birds in 1894.

After a couple of minutes, they both leap off the cliff and fall to the ground. Laying next to each other in intensive care at the hospital, one says to the other, "I don't think much of this budgie jumping." A General Discussion of Feather Plucking
Held by Dianalee Deter at Parrot Festival '99
and written by Shelly Lane
First, Take The Bird To A Vet
When a parrot first begins pulling or mutilating its feathers, Dianalee strongly believes the bird should immediately be taken to a qualified avian veterinarian for a complete work-up, including a CBC, to rule out any possible medical problems. I have to agree. There are medical causes of feather plucking and with the tests that are available, they are the easiest causes to determine. It just makes sense to go this route first.
Humidity
Regular bathing is necessary for feather health, and a bird that has dirty feathers and/or dry itchy skin is more prone to plucking. This is especially true in areas of the country that experience a lack of humidity. Remember that in many areas, lack of humidity is a seasonal problem so if your bird tends to pluck only at certain times of the year, this is a cause you might want to consider. Frequent showers or baths may help alleviate or prevent feather disorder behaviors in parrots, especially if you live in an area where lack of humidity in the air is an issue. Using a humidifier during the dry times of the year may also help.

90. Parrot Island--Articles
Isn't it? Most Amazons and parrots in general are naturally very noisy. We talkoften about how we modify their wild behaviors to be acceptable in captivity.
http://www.parrotislandinc.com/anoise.htm
Parrots and Noise
by Shari Beaudoin Parrot noise and screaming is one of the main behavior issues we discuss regularly with our customers. Lt. Columbo, my Double Yellow Headed Amazon, for instance is certain that when I am on the phone or talking with someone else I have forgotten he exists. Screaming must be the answer. Isn't it? Most Amazons and parrots in general are naturally very noisy. We talk often about how we modify their wild behaviors to be acceptable in captivity. I say modify because this seems to be the key to parrot training success. In the wild screaming is a very natural way of communication. They must be heard over several miles of rain forest. This is how they call to other members of their flock, attract mates, and alert warnings of possible danger. Not only that but parrots love to hear themselves yell. Anyone watching an amazon in full vocalization can see they are truly enjoying themselves. Often times their tails are flaring and their eyes are dilating. As Sally Blanchard would put it, "They are obviously very full of themselves". By far the most frequently asked question we hear in the store each day is "Which of these birds talk?" When choosing a parrot as a lifetime companion, keep in mind that the best talkers are also usually the best screamers. It takes patience and a lot of behavior modification to have a noise level that is acceptable to both you and your parrot.
